The study area is located in cental Slovenia, and geologically located at the junction between the Alps and the Dinarides. The Middle Triassic of this region is characterised by intense rifting ...manifested by differential subsidence and volcanism. This led to a major paleogeographic reorganisation of the region, where three paleogeographic domains formed in the Upper Triassic: The Julian Carbonate Platform in the north, the intermediate Slovenian Basin, both parts of the Southern Alps, and the Dinaric (Adriatic, Friuli) Carbonate Platform in the south, which today is a part of the External Dinarides that host the area of investigation. Prior to the installation of the Dinaric Carbonate Platfrom, i.e. in the Ladinian, the entire area of the preset-day External Dinarides broke up into numerous tectonic blocks that were exposed to either erosion or continental, shallow-marine, and deep-marine sedimentation. In this study, we analyse at small scale a complex transitional area between a local carbonate platform and the Kobilji curek basin (depositional area dominated by deeper marine sediments), located in the Rute Plateau in central Slovenia south of Ljubljana. During enhanced subsidence, the basin was filled with volcanic material (tuffs and volcanogenic clays and subordinate extrusive material), while the adjacent platform aggraded. The slope was positioned above active paleofaults. During relative sea level lowstand, the platform prograded across the basin. The study area is divided into four major tectonic paleoblocks. The NW paleoblock experienced the most enhanced subsidence, and the platform prograded twice in this area and was submerged again by the rejuvenated subsidence and/or sea-level rise. The second and third paleoblocks subsided only during discrete major subsidence events, and the carbonates of the platform and slope were soon reinstated therein. In the fourth paleoblock to the east the platform persisted during the Ladinian. In the Carnian, the entire study area became emerged, and continental clastics were deposited. These were then replaced by a uniform shallow marine/intertidal Hauptdolomit (Dolomia Principale) formation at the onset of the Norian. This study provides the first detailed reconstruction of the sedimentary evolution of small-scale Ladinian basin and platforms system in the northern External Dinarides.
Kamnolom v naselju Podpeč pri Ljubljani velja za glavni kamnolom rimske kolonije Emone (Ljubljana). Obstoj antičnega kamnoloma v Podpeči je bil do sedaj utemeljen le na podlagi makroskopske ...podobnosti med Členom litiotidnega apnenca, ki izdanja v Podpeči, in z njim povezanimi rimskimi spomeniki, odkritimi v Ljubljani. V okviru pričujočega dela smo skušali poiskati oprijemljive arheološke in geoarheološke dokaze za njegov obstoj. V skrajno severnem delu kamnoloma smo izvedli arheološko sondiranje, hkrati pa natančno določili sestavo apnenca na tem območju in v 288 izdelkih iz antične Emone. Sondiranje severno od modernega kamnoloma je odkrilo dobro ohranjene sledove rimskodobne kamnoseške dejavnosti. Hkrati je litološka analiza spomenikov iz Emone razkrila, da je kar 182 (ali 64 odstotkov) analiziranih spomenikov izdelanih iz apnenca, litološko identičnega različkom, ki izdanjajo v Podpeči. Ti različki se prostorsko grupirajo severno od modernega kamnoloma. Pri tem sicer ostaja odprto vprašanje pripadnosti nekaterih različkov apnenca v izdelkih, ki so brez diagnostičnih komponent in bi lahko pripadali tudi nekoliko starejšemu Členu krkinega apnenca. Rekonstrukcijo obsega starega kamnoloma omogoča primerjava faciesov izvornih litostratigrafskih enot in izdelkov, pa tudi historična analiza zgodnjih kartografskih in katastrskih dokumentov. Analiza najzgodnejših izdelkov je omogočila hipotezo o prihodu kamnosekov iz kamnoloma v Nabrežini.
Pronounced tectonic and paleogeographic changes were detected in the Alpine–Pannonian region during the Miocene at the interface between the Alps, the Dinarides, and the Pannonian Basin. To ...understand the major tectonic, paleogeographic, and paleoclimatic changes during this period, geochemical and mineralogical investigations were carried out on the fine-grained clastic sedimentary rocks in the Tunjice Hills. The paleoweathering indicates a cold and/or arid to a warm and humid period. The paleoclimate and the regional climatic conditions correspond well with the Middle Miocene Climatic Optimum. The mineral composition shows an abundance of quartz and calcite. Quartz is associated with detrital origin from volcanic and metamorphic rocks of the Eastern and Southern Alps and with authigenic processes in sediments. Calcite is related to authigenic origin formed in shallow marine environments and to detrital provenance from the Southern Alps. Not all discriminant functions based on major oxides provided adequate results in determining the tectonic setting. The source rocks were subjected to oceanic island arc and collision. Moreover, sedimentation was influenced by both active and passive margin settings. The former is related to the Alpine collision, which continued from the Cenozoic onward, and the latter is connected to the processes associated with the formation of the Pannonian Basin System, which began in the late Early Miocene.
The Marof archaeological site, which dates back to the 1st–5th centuries ce, lies 10 km SE of the Roman settlement of Emona of Regio X (Venetia and Histria). In addition to other artefacts, several ...stone blocks were recovered. The blocks include worked (shaped) and unworked (natural forms) objects. The provenance of these stones was determined based on their lithological characteristics. The analysis shows that the stone is of Early Jurassic age. While the worked blocks are lithologically diverse and extracted from several sources located within a 10 km radius, the unworked blocks are lithologically homogeneous and originate from the site.
Over the course of studying stone products from the Roman colony of Emona (Regio X), stratigraphically undefined calcarenite that was used to make simple sepulchral and architectural stone products ...was detected. The calcarenite used is late Aptian to early Cenomanian in age. The corresponding facies were found in the Lower Flyschoid Formation outcropping near the town of Medvode, within the local radius of Emona. The Roman quarry was likely located in this area near the Sava River. According to the collected data, the quarry was in operation mainly in the 1st century.
With an increasing global demand for raw materials, along with an ageing work force
in Europe and public distrust for the sector at large, there is a rapidly growing need to
work with public ...awareness and education within the subject of geology. By using inno-
vative tools and models such as gamification, we can develop and nurture interest
in raw materials and geology for the future workers and policy makers within the EU.
BetterGeoEdu is a project that targets primary schools by providing teacher resources
on raw materials, circular economy and sustainability using BetterGeo – a modifica-
tion of the immensely popular video game Minecraft. The gamification model is used to
engage and motivate students by inspiring creativity and learning while having fun.
