AMONG MANY JEWS TODAY , the reputations of German-Jewish intellectuals generally and their left-wing circles in particular have fallen on hard times. In their quests for assimilation as “German ...citizens of the Jewish faith” or for humanist cosmopolitanism outside religion and nationalism, they appear to exemplify what Jean-Paul Sartre called the inauthentic Jew, that tragic specialist in self-evasion.
