The present study aimed to evaluate the chemical composition, profile and fermentative losses, microbial population and the aerobic stability of mixed silages of cactus pear and gliricidia. The ...treatments corresponded to the addition levels of gliricidia (Gliricidia sepium (Jacq.) Steud), in the silages of cactus pear (Opuntia ficus indica Mill.), at ratios 0%, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% gliricidia. The data were subjected to analysis of variance and regression to evaluate the effect of the addition levels of gliricidia. The average related to the opening days were compared by the Tukey's test and the average hours of exposure to air were compared by the Student's t-test. The addition of gliricidia in cactus pear silage provided a linear increasing effect for pH, crude protein (CP), neutral detergent fibre (NDF), acid detergent fibre (ADF), acid detergent lignin (ADL), neutral detergent insoluble protein (NDIP), and increased aerobic stability (AS). The highest dry matter recovery was estimated in the silages with 58% gliricidia. Based on the fermentative, chemical composition and silage losses, all the silages tested were adequate. However, considering aerobic stability, the addition of at least 25% gliricidia is recommended to provide the animal a feed with important quality and high nutritional value.
ABSTRACT The aim of the study was to evaluate the morphological and productive characteristics of five genotypes of Desmanthus spp. submitted to two cutting intensities (20 and 40 cm), in the ...semi-arid region of Pernambuco. Of the genotypes studied, three were derived from ecotypes collected in municipalities of Pernambuco (7G, 31D and 50J) and two were from the state of Sergipe, coming from Australia (10AU and 13AU). Four cuttings were made with a frequency of 60 days. The treatments were randomized in blocks, with split plots and three replications. The variables studied were plant height, stem diameter, canopy diameter, the number of leaves per branch, LAI, leaf yield, stem yield, pod yield and forage yield, and leaf stem -1 ratio and pod stem-1 ratio. Genotypes 7G and 31D had higher forage yield and a larger number of leaves per branch. Forage yield was higher in the intensity of 20 cm. The cuttings reduced the total yield, stem yield, pods yield and forage yield, of the different genotypes studied. For leaf stem-1 ratio, the genotype 13AU was higher than genotypes 7G and 50J in the cutting intensity of 40 cm. Genotype 10AU had the highest pod stem-1 ratios in the three cuttings. The differences shown between genotypes of Desmanthus spp., especially 7G and 31D, in the intensity of 20 cm, indicate the possibility of selecting promising materials for cultivation in the semi-arid region of Pernambuco, with desirable morphological and productive characteristics to the forage plants.
RESUMO O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar características morfológicas e produtivas de cinco genótipos de Desmanthus spp., submetidos a duas intensidades de corte (20 e 40 cm) no Semiárido de Pernambuco. Dos genótipos estudados, três foram oriundos de ecótipos coletados em municípios de Pernambuco (7G, 31D e 50J) e dois advindos do estado de Sergipe, oriundos da Austrália (10AU e 13AU). Foram realizados quatro cortes, com frequência de 60 dias. Os tratamentos foram casualisados em blocos, com parcelas subdivididas e três repetições. As variáveis estudadas foram altura da planta, diâmetro do caule, diâmetro da copa, número de folhas/ramo, IAF, produção de folhas, de caule, de vagem e de forragem, relação folha/caule e vagem/caule. Os genótipos 7G e 31D apresentaram maior produção de forragem e maior quantidade de folhas por ramo . A produção de forragem foi maior na intensidade de 20 cm. Os cortes influenciaram a produção de massa seca total, de caule, de vagem e de forragem dos diferentes genótipos estudados. Para a relação folha/caule o genótipo 13AU foi superior aos 7G e 50J na intensidade de corte 40 cm. O genótipo 10AU obteve as maiores relações vagem/caule nos três cortes. As diferenças apresentadas entre os genótipos de Desmanthus spp., com destaque para o 7G e 31D, na intensidade de 20 cm, indicam a possibilidade selecionar materiais promissores para o cultivo no Semiárido de Pernambuco, com características morfológicas e produtivas desejáveis às plantas forrageiras.
The aim of this study was to compare the performance, intake, digestibility, ruminal parameters, carcass traits, and the yield of commercial cuts of Santa Ines (SI) and Rabo Largo (RL) breeds fed ...diets with high or low roughage-to-concentrate ratio (R:C) under a tropical climate. Twenty lambs from each breed were individually housed in covered pens and fed the experimental diets for 58 days. The diets were formulated to meet the growth requirements of lambs with a roughage-to-concentrate ratio of 70:30 and 30:70. Significant interactions of breed × diet for nutrient intake were observed (

< 0.05), with SI lambs fed low R:C diet showing higher intake of dry matter, organic matter, crude protein, and total carbohydrates compared to RL lambs fed the same diet. SI lambs fed high R:C diet had higher intake of neutral detergent fiber than RL lambs (

< 0.05). SI lambs displayed better average daily gain and feed efficiency, regardless of diet (

< 0.05). Carcass traits and gastrointestinal components were influenced by breed and diet (

< 0.05). SI lambs fed low R:C diet showed higher subcutaneous fat thickness and better carcass finishing compared to RL lambs (

< 0.05). SI breed lambs exhibited better growth performance, carcass traits, and gastrointestinal characteristics, even when fed diets with a high roughage-to-concentrate ratio.
This experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of increasing levels of greasy babassu by-product (GBB) effects on ingestive behaviour, physiological parameters and carcase traits. Twenty-eight ...lambs (20.6 ± 4.1 kg of initial BW) were distributed in a completely randomised design being confined for 60 days. The treatments were GBB inclusion levels (0, 50, 100 and 150 g kg

, in DM basis) in diets with 20% roughage and 80% concentrate (DM basis). Physiological parameters and ingestive behaviour did not change with the inclusion of GBB in the diets (P > 0.05); however, the time of ruminating tended to decrease as well as the time of ruminating chews per bolus, and number of ruminating chews per bolus (P < 0.10). Additionally, inclusion of GBB did not change the carcase traits and commercial meat cuts (P > 0.05). Thus, the addition of GBB up to 150 g kg

in the diet for finishing lambs represents an attractive alternative feed for corn and soybean meal, which does not modify the physiological parameters, ingestive behaviour and carcase traits.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the characteristics and recovery of minerals in silages of sorghum cv. IPA 2502 irrigated with different leaching fractions of brackish water. Sorghum ...cultivation was carried out in the field in a randomised block design, with four replications and four irrigation leaching fractions (0%, 5%, 10%, and 15%). From the harvested plant material, five silos per treatment, with five repetitions, were arranged in a completely randomised design for ensiling. Leaching fractions did not alter the levels of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, and sulfur in sorghum. The sodium content showed a quadratic response to the leaching fractions, which was also observed for iron, manganese, and chloride. In silage, an increasing linear effect was found for nitrogen, whereas for phosphorus, potassium, and sulfur, the contents were reduced with the addition of the leaching fraction. The contents of copper, iron, zinc, and chloride in silages responded in a quadratic way. The use of brackish water, especially the 15% leaching fraction, in the cultivation of sorghum enhances the mineral contents and the recovery of some macro- and micro-nutrients after the ensiling process.
