Background: Dental caries is a chronic, widespread, and infectious disease affecting the large population. Anticariogenic effects of different herbs and natural products are observed, cinnamon among ...these, showed the ability to inhibit Streptococcus mutans biofilm. Objectives: The aim of this study was to assess the cinnamon water extract use on nicotine exposed S. mutans biolfilms. Materials and Methods: Microtiter plates having S. mutans culture were treated using varying nicotine concentration range (0-32 mg/ml). These were then either subjected to cinnamon water (2.5 mg/ml) extract or no treatment and analyzed using a spectrophotometer to see planktonic growth, total growth absorbance, and biofilm formation. Results: About 2.5 mg/ml of cinnamon water inhibits the S. mutans biofilm (nicotine-induced) considerably at various nicotine levels (0-32 mg/ml). Conclusion: Cinnamon water extract has a powerful inhibitory effect for S. mutans growth. Nicotine-induced S. mutans growth is markedly reduced by treating with cinnamon water extract.
•Suitability of sandstone slurry as total replacement of aggregates has been studied.•M20 grade of concrete was used for the study to determine durability.•An equivalent result of sulphate resistance ...was observed with respect to OPC concrete.
Durability is one of the primary concern in new buildings and also for the old existing infrastructures. This paper deals with the durability properties of concrete containing sandstone slurry as a filler material. A significant quantity of sandstone slurry gets deposited, and their disposal problem becomes acuter. In order to utilize these wastes and to practice a sustainable construction, the ultimate solution is to use these types of sandstone slurry in concrete.
Since durability plays an enormous role in maintaining the infrastructure for years, various tests such as compressive strength, flexural strength, water absorption, sulfate attack, acid attack, carbonation, DIN-Permeability, sorptivity are done to get the durability of the sandstone slurry mix in concrete.
This paper presents the result of experimental research to examine the suitability of sandstone slurry as a partial replacement of total aggregates in cement concrete. It was observed that up to a certain level of substitution, compressive and flexural strength show a comparable result to that of control concrete. Also, it shows a good result with a controlled replacement towards acid-attack as well as sulfate attack and are equivalent to that of Portland cement concrete. Similar effect were also observed towards carbonation and permeability. From the results, it can be said that there is a promising future for the use of sandstone slurry as a partial replacement of total aggregate, which can lead to more significant environmental and sustainable benefits.
ABSTRACT
The detection and accurate astrometry of fast-moving near-Earth objects (NEOs) has been a challenge for the follow-up community. Their fast apparent motion results in streaks in sidereal ...images, thus affecting the telescope’s limiting magnitude and astrometric accuracy. A widely adopted technique to mitigate trailing losses is non-sidereal tracking, which transfers the streaking to background reference stars. However, no existing publicly available astrometry software is configured to detect such elongated stars. We present Astreaks, a streaking source detection algorithm, to obtain accurate astrometry of NEOs in non-sidereal data. We validate the astrometric accuracy of Astreaks on 371 non-sidereally tracked images for 115 NEOs with two instrument set-ups of the GROWTH-India Telescope. The observed NEOs had V-band magnitude in the range 15, 22 with proper motion up to 140 arcsec min−1, thus resulting in stellar streaks as high as 6.5 arcmin (582 pixels) in our data. Our method obtained astrometric solutions for all images with 100 per cent success rate. The standard deviation in observed-minus-computed (O–C) residuals is 0.52 arcsec with O–C residuals <2 arcsec (<1 arcsec) for 98.4 per cent (84.4 per cent) of our measurements. These are appreciable, given the pixel scale of ∼0.3 and ∼0.7 arcsec of our two instrument set-ups. This demonstrates that our modular and fully automated algorithm helps improve the telescope system’s limiting magnitude without compromising astrometric accuracy by enabling non-sidereal tracking on the target. This will help the NEO follow-up community cope with the accelerated discovery rates and improved sensitivity of the next-generation NEO surveys. Astreaks has been made available to the community under an open-source license.

Deformation of lipid membrane by peripheral BAR (Bin/Amphiphysin/RVs) proteins due to electrostatic interaction between them has an important implication in field of cell-biological systems. We study ...the deformation behavior of a lipid membrane sheet subjected to electrostatic traction with the help of a very simple finite element elastic model. The lipid membrane is considered as an elastic sheet subjected to the electrostatic traction derived from the literature for the interaction between the lipid membrane and a single BAR protein. Both the small and large deformation behavior of the lipid membrane is considered. To predict small or infinitesimal deformation of the membrane, we use Hooke’s law and large deformation is predicted by Neo-Hookean strain energy density function. The small deformation behavior obtained from the present finite element model does not support the scaffolding mechanism of a single BAR protein binding with the lipid membrane. However, the large deformation behavior of the membrane predicts very well the scaffolding mechanism for the wide range of BAR proteins involved in cell-biological systems. The present model can be used for understanding deformation of any kind of elastic sheet driven by electrostatic forces.

"Baby Sentry" is designed as an automated cradle that operates on sensors. This cradle is mainly designed to detect any possible external harm while keeping the baby comfortable and notifying the ...parents of the baby's condition. The cradle would monitor the baby's activities continuously, including the expressions, moisture, temperature, surroundings, etc. To make sure that the baby is comfortable, the cradle would automatically swing when required and play soothing audio(like ragas, mother's voice, music, etc.) to calm the baby. A Health Algorithm is applied to these real-time datasets to get information about the body's conditions. All these actions can be handled using the app. An external camera will photograph anyone who approaches the cradle, and the app will notify the parents.
Lung cancer is a lung-affecting chronic disease that may severely affects the respiratory system. These days, lung cancer is known as the leading causes of death and is very difficult to cure at an ...advanced stage. Hence, detection and diagnosis of lung cancer at an early stage has become an essential requirement to offer a timely and successful treatment to the patient suffering from this disease. Recently, machine learning algorithms have gained momentum for the early diagnosis of disease that can assist specialist to greater extent in many ways. Hence, in the paper, the authors proposed a convolutional neural network (CNN) based on ResNet-50, a pre-trained CNN model, to uniquely classify the CT scans of lungs as cancerous or non-cancerous. The performance of the proposed system is assessed using 2478 lung CT scan images collected from LUNA 2016 dataset. The proposed transfer learning-based model achieved an accuracy of 99.1 per cent, which seems to be quite satisfactory in comparison to other recent state of art models reported in literature. Hence the proposed could be effectively utilized to assist doctors in interpreting and analyzing the lung cancer images for early diagnosis of lung cancer.
