The article explores the heterogeneity and complexity of contemporary refugee movements in Europe by analysing in particular the situation along the Balkan corridor, investigating the complex ...intersections of gender, age, ethnic affiliation, and other aspects reflecting the situation of individuals on the move. It focuses on construction of the vulnerability of individuals and social groups. Unlike restrictive policies, which reduce mobility, we perceive migrations as autonomous processes. Through an analysis of secondary data, reports and research, the article challenges
the policies of selecting migrants based on their legal status, using restrictive borders and transferring the external borders of the Schengen area into the internal territories of the member states – in our case, along the Balkan corridor.
The text studies how digitality and refugee routes intersect by focussing on the concepts of »connected migrants« and the digital footprints of refugee routes in transnational spaces. The smartphone ...is a key signifier of today’s refugee, and possession of one is questioned by government policies of legitimisation and public opinion perceptions of what constitutes a »genuine refugee«. These overlook the complex question of digital rights and migration’s embeddedness in the fluidity of the postmodern world. The text thus deals with the digital world’s ambivalence, which is not just a one-way relation of empowerment but entails the risk of complete control over a refugee’s body as well. We establish that an important shift has occurred in European policies, one most visible in the process of erasing the electronic traces of refugees on the move and the illegal return of refugees to the previous country on their way, the so-called »pushbacks«.
The essay provides a review of contestable demographic reasoning applied in relation to migration and mobility, in which the notion of the national population as a closed and bounded system still ...persists. Although free movement of people has been enshrined as one of the fundamental principles of the European Union, their mobility within it remains selective and curtailed in various ways. Drawing on selected studies of labour mobility and migration within the European Union, the authors argue that labour mobility and migration policies continue to categorise people as either more or less entitled to move across the European Union's internal borders.
The smartphone has become one of the main tenets of contemporary spatial as well as digital migration routes that are increasingly determined by technologies, platforms and networks. Such routes have ...become increasingly dangerous and uncertain, which testifies of structural criminalisation and control of people on the move, but also raises important questions about autonomy and agency of individuals as a response to restrictive migration and border policies. The monograph explores such transformations by focussing on the movement of refugees across the borders of nation-states through a rethinking of the notion of vulnerability (especially of women and children), the examination of perceptions of refugees and migrants by the public and a reflection of the notions of climate change and climate refugees that all challenge the main classificatory mechanisms constructing more or less “legitimate” groups of migrants. In this vein, the authors argue for more solidarity throughout the movement of individuals through the “gates” and “violent borders” of contemporary nation-states.
In contemporary social science research, researchers largely perceive ethnic groups as a result of a process of boundary making rather than a taken for granted part of our world. However, in ...methodological terms, researchers often still see ethnicity as imposed on the research process rather than as constructed throughout it. Using personal experience from several research projects, the author first presents the role of ethnic belonging in her research. She then identifies other factors as crucial in negotiating her insider/outsider status in the “field”. The author shows that the researcher’s insider/outsider status is not a fixed category, but is rather negotiated in the research process, depending on the researcher’s multiple and shifting positionalities. Drawing on the critique of methodological nationalism and on the theories of transnationalism in the social sciences and the humanities, she discusses the recent transformations of research designs in qualitative migration research and argues for more de-ethnicised research on migration. On this basis, she calls for migration research beyond locally bounded research sites.
Results of rare research on domestic violence among the Roma demonstrate that both cultural and structural barriers that influence the recognition and treatment of domestic violence in these families exist. Based on expert interviews with social workers, NGO representatives and health workers, the contribution presents their experiences and perceived obstacles in recognising and dealing with violence in families of the Roma. It was found that both supposed cultural specificities of the Roma as well as multiple aspects of their social inclusion are emphasised when talking about this topic. Consequently, it is imperative to develop further the ethnic sensitivity of experts as well as to address structural barriers that affect both recognition and treatment of domestic violence in Roma families.
