Anemia represents a significant cause of maternal and perinatal mortality, as well as child mortality. The aim of the research was to determine the serum concentration of hepcidin in children aged 6 ...months to 2 years and adolescents aged 11 to 19 years which suffer from iron deficiency anemia and compare it with the serum concentration of hepcidin in the control groups, as well as to determine its connection with the parameters of the iron metabolism.
The research included 173 examinees, 89 of them suffered from iron deficiency anemia and 84 did not suffer from iron deficiency anemia (the latter represented the control group). Blood samples were collected from all study participants. The samples were analyzed for complete blood count and parameters of iron metabolism. ELISA method was used for establishing serum hepcidin levels.
The research showed that the concentration of hepcidin is statistically lower in children (4.4 ng/mL) and adolescents (4.1 ng/mL) who suffer from iron deficiency anemia in comparison with the control group (14 ng/mL, 10 ng/mL, respectively). The positive correlation between serum hepcidin level and iron in the serum, ferritin, the mean corpuscular volume and transferrin saturation was confirmed, but the negative one occurred in serum hepcidin level, transferrin and reticulocytes.
The age of the examinees does not influence the level of serum hepcidin which makes it a more sensitive indicator of the level of iron in the body. Besides this, serum hepcidin is a reliable biological marker for the assessment of iron deficiency anemia.

We present the case of an eight-year old girl with tumorous soft tissue calcium deposits and Raynaud's phenomenon. At the age of 3.5 years, our patient was admitted to Pediatric Surgery Clinic because of bilateral acrocyanosis localized at the fingertips area of hands, with the signs of vascular trauma. Therapy with vasodilators and hyperbaric oxygen treatment were completed. This therapy resulted in improvement. At the age of eight, the patient was admitted again due to intermittent, painful cramps localized in both hands. Punctiform deposits were present at the tips of fingers and toes, which looked like calcifications and were spontaneously eliminated, with the remnants of crater-shaped defects. A hard tumorous deformity localized in soft tissue was present in the extensor area of the right elbow. Laboratory indicators of inflammation were within the reference values, and antinuclear antibodies were positive. A nodus localized at the right elbow was extirpated. Pathohistological findings: connective and fat tissue with large deposits of calcium.
Further follow-up of our patient is necessary due to possible development of complete picture of CREST syndrome or systemic sclerosis.
Background: Anemia is a global public health problem of endemic proportions, especially in women, and with serious health consequences. Anemia was defined according to the World Health Organization ...criteria as hemoglobin concentration <130 g/L for men and <120 g/L for women. The incidence of anemia varies between regions, so the aim of the study was to determine the incidence of anemia in a randomly selected sample of adult working individuals of both sexes, in Vojvodina.
Methods: The study included a total of 6087 subjects (4658 men and 1429 non-pregnant women) aged 18-65 years who presented for a regular checkup at the Public Health Institute of Vojvodina. Blood specimen collection was performed by antecubital venipuncture in all subjects.
Results: The results showed that the incidence of anemia in adults in Vojvodina was 7.7%, and it was more frequent in women (20%) than in men (3.86%). The most frequent was normocytic anemia, whereas microcytic anemia was less prevalent. Macrocytic anemia was found in only 3.3% of subjects, exclusively in women. The greatest proportion of anemic subjects, regardless of sex, had hemoglobin levels that indicated mild anemia (Hb 100-119 g/L for women, and 100-129 g/L for men). Only 4% of men and 12% of women had Hb levels that indicated the presence of moderate or severe anemia (≤100 g/L).
Conclusions: Considering the medical, social and economic consequences anemia may produce, identification of risk factors and application of adequate preventive measures should be a public health priority.
Uvod: Anemija je globalan, problem u oblasti javnog zdrav- stva, endemskih razmera, naročito među ženskom popu- lacijom, sa ozbiljnim posledicama po zdravije. Prema kriteriju- mima Svetské zdravstvene organizacije, anemija je definisana kao koncentracija hemoglobina <130 g/L za muškarce i <120 g/L za žene. Njena incidenca varira od regiona do regiona, te je cilj rada bio da se utvrdi učestalost anemije u slučajnom uzorku odraslih zaposlenih osoba oba pola u Vojvodini.
Metode: Istraživanje je sprovedeno u 6087 ispitanika (4658 muškaraca i 1429 žena koje nisu trudne) starosti 18-65 go- dina koji su se javili na periodični sistematski pregled u Insti- tutu za javno zdravlje Vojvodine. Svim ispitanicima je ante- kubitalnom venepunkcijom uzet uzorak krvi za određivanje krvne slike.
Rezultati: Utvrđeno je da na teritoriji Vojvodine incidenca anemije kod odraslih iznosi 7,7%, pri čemu je ona učestalija među ženskom populacijom (20%) u odnosu na mušku po- pulaciju (3,86%). Među anemičnom odraslom populacijom najveća je bila zastupljenost normocitne anemije, a daleko manja mikrocitne anemije. Makrocitna anemija je bila zastu- pljena kod svega 3,3% ispitanika i to isključivo ženskog pola. U najvećem procentu anemičnih ispitanika u ovoj studiji, bez obzira na pol, vrednosti hemoglobina ukazuju na blaži stepen anemije (Hb 100-119 g/L za žene, odnosno 100-129 g/L za muškarce). Samo 4% muškaraca i 12% žena je imalo vred- nosti Hb koje ukazuju na prisustvo umereno teške ili teške anemije (i 100 g/L).
Zaključak: S obzirom na zdravstvene, socijalne i ekonomske posledice do kojih malokrvnost može dovesti, identifikacija faktora rizika za pojavu anemije i primena odgovarajućih pre- ventivnih mera bi trebalo da budu u javnom zdravstvu.

Hepcidin je peptidni hormon niske molekularne težine koji ima ključnu ulogu u metabolizmu gvožđa. Cilj istraživanja je bio da se odredi serumska koncentracija hepcidina kod dece uzrasta od 6 meseci do 2 godine i adolescenata uzrasta od 11 do 19 godina koji boluju od sideropenijske anemije i uporedi sa serumskim koncentracijama hepcidina u kontrolnim grupama, kao i da se utvrdi njegova povezanost sa parametrima metabolizma gvožđa. Ispitivanjem je obuhvaćeno ukupno 173 ispitanika, 89 ispitanika koji su bolovali od sideropenijske anemije i 84 ispitanika koji nisu bolovali od sideropenijske anemije i koji su predstavljali kontrolnu grupu. Svim ispitanicima je venepunkcijom uzorkovana krv za određivanje kompletne krvne slike i prametara metabolizma gvožđa. ELISA metodom je određen nivo hepcidina u serumu. Ispitivanjem je utvrđeno da je koncentracija hepcidina statistički značajno niža u dece i adolescenata koji boluju od sideropenijske anemije u poređenju sa decom i adolescentima koji ne boluju od sideropenijske anemije. Potvrđena je pozitivna korelacija između koncentarcije serumskog hepcidina i gvožđa u serumu, feritina, srednjeg volumena eritrocita i saturacije transferina, a negativna korelacija između koncentracije serumskog hepcidina i transferina i broja retikulocita. Koncentracija transferina i nezasićeni kapacitet vezivanja gvožđa, ukupni kapacitet za vezivanje gvožđa i broj retikulocita su međusobno u pozitivnoj korelaciji, a korelacija koncentracije transferina sa parametrima saturacija transferina, koncentracije gvožđa i hemoglobina je negativna. Na vrednost serumskog hepcidina ne utiču niti pol niti uzrast ispitanika što ga čini senzitivnijim pokazateljem stanja gvožđa u organizmu i pouzdanijim biološkim markerom u dijagnostici sideropenijske anemije.

The purpose of this study was to determine the possibility of the multiplication of the enterocyte mass using the technique of serosal patch with the application of hematopoietic stem cells, as well as the assessment of the quality of newly formed mucosa.
Sixty Mill Hill hooded rats were divided in 4 groups, 15 animals each. In the control group animals, the patch was not created. In the other three groups, the animals were operated on and in each group 8 parietal and 7 visceral patches have been created. One of the groups with operated animals (Group NS) was not postoperatively treated. The second group of operated animals (Group G) was stimulated with granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF). The third group of operated animals (Group GM) was stimulated with recombined humane granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (rHuGM-CSF).
In the group of animals that were not stimulated, epithelium proliferated slowly. In the group of animals stimulated with G-CSF stimulants, the epithelium initially proliferated rapidly, but appeared atrophic after eight weeks. Stimulation by rHuGM-CSF led to faster epithelization, and epithelium showed signs of advancing proliferation after eight weeks.
We confirmed the possibility of enterocyte mass multiplication by using the serosal patch technique, as well as that stimulation with rHuGM-CSF is more effective than stimulation with G-CSF.
Do oštećenja tankog creva i crevnog epitela dolazi u brojnim oboljenjima, i dovodi do potrebe za novim epitelnim tkivom creva. Stoga je bioinženjering primenjen na tanko crevo postalo interesantno područje intraživanja, u kome je svaki doprinos dobrodošao.
Svrha istraživanja bilo je ispitivanje mogućnosti umnožavanja enterocitne mase tehnikom seroznog patch-a, uz primenu faktora stimulacije kolonija.
Ukupno šezdeset Mill Hill Hooded pacova podeljeno je u četiri grupe od po 15 životinja. Životinje u kontrolnoj grupi nisu operativno tretirane. U preostale tri grupe je operativnom tehnikom u svakoj grupi kreirano po 8 parijetalnih i 7 visceralnih patcheva. Životinje u jednoj grupi nisu postoperativno tretirane (Grupa NS). Životinje u drugoj grupi (Grupa G) stimulisane su faktorom stimulacije kolonija granulocita (granulocyte colony-stimulating factor, G-CSF). Treća grupa ( Grupa GM) je stimulisana rekombinovanim humanim faktorom stimulacije kolonija granulocita i makrofaga (recombined humane granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor, rHuGM-CSF).
U grupama životinja koje nisu stimulisane faktorima stimulacije kolonija, epitel je sporo proliferisao. U grupama stimulisanim G-CSF, epitel je inicijalno ubrzano proliferisao, ali je nakon osam nedelja postajao atrofi čan. Stimulacija sa rHuGM-CSF dovela je do brze epitelizacije, a epitel je i nakon osam nedelja pokazivao znake dalje proliferacije.
Rezultati našeg istraživanja potvrđuju mogućnost umnožavanja enterocitne mase tehnikom seroznog patch-a. Takođe, stimulacija sa rHuGM-CSF pokazala se mnogo efi kasnijom od stimulacije enterocita sa G-CSF.

AIM: To analyze the relationship between plasma and platelet serotonin levels and the degree of liver insufficiency. METHODS: The prospective study included 30 patients with liver cirrhosis and 30 ...healthy controls. The degree of liver failure was assessed according to the Child-Pugh classification. Platelet and platelet poor plasma serotonin levels were determined. RESULTS: The mean plasma serotonin level was higher in liver cirrhosis patients than in healthy subjects (215.0 ±26.1 vs 63.1 ± 18.1 nmol/L; P 〈 0.0001). The mean platelet serotonin content was not significantly different in patients with liver cirrhosis compared with healthy individuals (4.8 ± 0.6; 4.2± 0.3 nmol/platelet; P 〉 0.05). Plasma serotonin levels were significantly higher in ChildPugh grade A/B than in grade C patients (246.8 ± 35.0 vs 132.3 ± 30.7 nmol/L; P 〈 0.05). However, platelet serotonin content was not significantly different between Child-Pugh grade C and grade A/B (4.6 ± 0.7 vs 5.2 ± 0.8 nmol/platelet; P 〉 0.05). CONCLUSION: Plasma serotonin levels are significantly higher in patients with cirrhosis than in the controls and represent the degree of liver insufficiency. In addition, platelet poor plasma serotonin estimation is a better marker for liver insufficiency than platelet serotonin content.

Anemia represents a worldwide problem which leads to substantial health, social and economic issues. Although it was identified as a common health problem many years ago, not a lot has been done in controlling anemia and its prevalence has stayed unacceptably high. The iron deficit is the most frequent cause of anemia, 6-24 month-old children and adolescents are vulnerable groups. Hepcidin is a peptide hormone of a low molecular weight which has a main role in the iron metabolism. The aim of the research was to determine the serum concentration of hepcidin in children aged from 6 months to 2 years and in adolescents from the age of 11 to 19 which suffer from iron deficiency anemia and compare it with the serum concentration of hepcidin in the control groups, as well as to determine its connection with the parameters of the iron metabolism. The research included 173 examinees, 89 of them suffered from iron deficiency anemia and 84 did not suffer from iron deficiency anemia. The latter represented the control group. All the examinees had their blood sampled intravenously in order for full blood count results and parameters of iron metabolism to be determined. Also, ELISA method was used for establishing the level of hepcidin in the serum. The research showed that the concentration of hepticin is statistically lower in children and adolescents who suffer from iron deficiency anemia in comparison with children and adolescents who do not have this condition. The positive correlation between the level of serum hepcidin and iron in the serum, ferritin, the medium volume of erythrocytes and transferrin saturation was confirmed but the negative one occurred in the level of the serum hepcidin, transferrin and reticulocyte. Transferrin and the unsaturated capacity of iron binding, the total capacity of iron binding and reticulocytes are in a positive correlation but the correlation of transferrin with the parameters of transferrin saturation, iron and hemoglobin is negative. The sex and the age of the examinees do not influence the level of serum hepcidin which makes it a more sensitive indicator of the level of iron in the body. Besides this, serum hepcidin is a reliable biological marker in the iron deficiency anemia diagnosis.
