Background. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), isolated from bone marrow, adipose tissue, and umbilical cord tissue, have been known to differentiate into hepatocyte-like cells. MSCs can also be easily ...obtained from umbilical cord lining membrane (CLMSCs). CLMSCs are more primitive MSCs than those isolated from other tissue sources. Objectives. The aim of this study was to investigate the in vitro differentiation of CLMSCs into hepatocyte lineage. Materials and Methods. In this study, CLMSCs were isolated through a tissue attachment method. Cells were characterized for expression of MSC-specific markers and differentiation potency. CLMSCs were induced to differentiate into hepatocytes by a simple two-step protocol. Differentiated cells were examined for the expression of hepatocyte-specific markers and hepatocyte functions. Results. CLMSCs expressed MSC-specific markers and differentiated into adipocytes and osteoblasts. RT-PCR, real-time qRT-PCR, Western blot, and immunocytochemistry analyses demonstrated that differentiated CLMSCs, having hepatocyte-like morphology, expressed several liver-specific markers, such as ALB, AFP, CK18, and CK19, at both mRNA and protein levels following hepatocyte differentiation. Furthermore, periodic acid-Schiff staining and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) uptake assay showed that differentiated cells could store glycogen and uptake LDL. Conclusion. This study demonstrated that CLMSCs can differentiate into functional hepatocyte-like cells. CLMSCs can serve as a favorable cell source for tissue engineering in the treatment of liver disease.
The retrieval of 3D objects has gained significant importance in recent years due to its broad range of applications in computer vision, computer graphics, virtual reality, and augmented reality. ...However, the retrieval of 3D objects presents significant challenges due to the intricate nature of 3D models, which can vary in shape, size, and texture, and have numerous polygons and vertices. To this end, we introduce a novel SHREC challenge track that focuses on retrieving relevant 3D animal models from a dataset using sketch queries and expedites accessing 3D models through available sketches. Furthermore, a new dataset named ANIMAR was constructed in this study, comprising a collection of 711 unique 3D animal models and 140 corresponding sketch queries. Our contest requires participants to retrieve 3D models based on complex and detailed sketches. We receive satisfactory results from eight teams and 204 runs. Although further improvement is necessary, the proposed task has the potential to incentivize additional research in the domain of 3D object retrieval, potentially yielding benefits for a wide range of applications. We also provide insights into potential areas of future research, such as improving techniques for feature extraction and matching and creating more diverse datasets to evaluate retrieval performance. https://aichallenge.hcmus.edu.vn/sketchanimar
Semi-automated patient transfer devices are essential in health facilities. Especially for patients with limited mobility. Improper patient transfer or poorly designed transfer equipment will cause ...unnecessary injury to both the patient and the medical staff. In this paper, we choose to solve the problem of working conditions of one of the current patient transfer devices with the aim of ensuring the safety of the device. Three problems are posed including: Center of gravity distribution to avoid overturning - Simulation of natural frequencies - Durability for critical locations. The results show that the structure of the product ensures safe working conditions for users.
There is still a long way to go before artificial mini robots are really used for search and rescue missions in disaster-hit areas due to hindrance in power consumption, computation load of the ...locomotion, and obstacle-avoidance system. Insect-computer hybrid system, which is the fusion of living insect platform and microcontroller, emerges as an alternative solution. This study demonstrates the first-ever insect-computer hybrid system conceived for search and rescue missions, which is capable of autonomous navigation and human presence detection in an unstructured environment. Customized navigation control algorithm utilizing the insect's intrinsic navigation capability achieved exploration and negotiation of complex terrains. On-board high-accuracy human presence detection using infrared camera was achieved with a custom machine learning model. Low power consumption suggests system suitability for hour-long operations and its potential for realization in real-life missions.
Today's projectors are widely used for information and media display in a stationary setup. There is also a growing effort to deploy projectors creatively, such as using a mobile projector to display ...visual content on an arbitrary surface. However, the quality of projected content is often limited by the quality of projection surface, environment lighting, and non-optimal projector settings. This paper presents a visual quality assessment method for projected content. Our method assesses the quality of the projected image by analyzing the projected image captured by a camera. The key challenge is that the quality of the captured image is often different from the perceived quality by a viewer as she "sees" the projected image differently than the camera. To address this problem, our method employs a data-driven approach that learns from the labeled data to bridge this gap. Our method integrates both manually crafted features and deep learning features and formulates projection quality assessment as a regression problem. Our experiments on a wide range of projection content, projection surfaces, and environment lighting show that our method can reliably score the quality of projected visual content in a way that is consistent with the human perception.
