Based on 12 well-preserved skeletons of postmetamorphic individuals, a new crown-group frog taxon is named and described from the Lower Cretaceous Guanghua (upper part of Longjiang) Formation ...(stratigraphic equivalent of the world-famed Yixian Formation) exposed in Dayangshu Basin, Hulunbuir, in the far northeast of Inner Mongolia, China. The new taxon, Genibatrachus baoshanensis, documents another Early Cretaceous anuran having reduction of the presacral vertebrae to eight in number, similar to several frog taxa of roughly the same age from Spain and Brazil. The new frog also displays several features that are ontogenetically and phylogenetically informative, including ontogenetic fusion of the palatine to the sphenethmoid, and ontogenetic fusion of ribs to the diapophyses of the posterior trunk vertebrae. In addition, the new discovery extends the geographic range of Early Cretaceous frogs of the Jehol Biota northward to near the 50th parallel north in East Asia.
The Hynobiidae are an early-diverging clade of crown-group salamanders (urodeles) with an important bearing on the evolution of urodeles. Paleobiology and early-branching patterns of the Hynobiidae ...remain unclear owing to a poorly documented fossil record. We reported a newly referred specimen to the stem hynobiid, originally named as “Liaoxitriton daohugouensis,” but here as Neimengtriton daohugouensis comb. nov., and predates the previously estimated origination time of Hynobiidae for at least 8 Myr. We interpret N. daohugouensis as semiaquatic at the adult stage, a previously unknown paleoecological preference among Mesozoic salamanders. Phenotypic variations of N. daohugouensis enlighten an unrecognized association between caudosacral vertebrae and fertilization modes in the early evolution of urodeles. Our cladistic analyses based on morphological characters not only recognize several stem hynobiids and establish Panhynobia nomen cladinovum for the total-group hynobiids but also shed light on the sequential evolution of morphological features in this primitive urodele clade.

Osteological comparisons with congeneric species has led to recognition of several diagnostic features that are unique to
, including: vomers widely separated from one another, lacking a midline contact; presence of uncommon perichondral ossification of the ascending process of the palatoquadrate as part of the suspensorium; and presence of a prominent posterodorsal process of the scapular blade, which serves as a ligamentous insertion of the levator muscle of the scapula. In addition, some but not all neotenic individuals retain the palatine as a discrete element, indicative of its delayed absorption after sexual maturity. Postmetamorphic and neotenic individuals are strikingly different in the complexity of hyobranchial structures. Neotenes display a high degree of ossification of hyobranchial elements, tend to increase ossification of both hypobranchial I and ceratobranchial I during aging, and retain fully ossified ceratobranchial III and IV; in contrast, these elements remain entirely cartilaginous or are totally lost by resorption in postmetamorphic individuals. In addition, all postmetamorphic forms display an inverted "T"-shaped basibranchial II, whereas neotenes show transformation from a "fork"-shaped to the "T"-shaped configuration after sexual maturity.

To explore the interactive influence of glucocorticoids and cytochrome P450 (CYP450) polymorphisms on voriconazole (VRC) plasma trough concentrations (C

) and provide a reliable basis for ...reasonable application of VRC.
Methods:
A total of 918 VRC C
min
from 231 patients was collected and quantified using high-performance liquid chromatography in this study. The genotypes of
CYP2C19
,
CYP3A4
, and
CYP3A5
were detected by DNA sequencing assay. The effects of different genotypes and the coadministration of glucocorticoids on VRC C
min
were investigated. Furthermore, the interactive effects of glucocorticoids with CYP450s on VRC C
min
were also analyzed.
Results:
The median C
min
of oral administration was lower than that of intravenous administration (1.51 vs. 4.0 mg l
−1
). Coadministration of glucocorticoids (including dexamethasone, prednisone, prednisolone, and methylprednisolone) reduced the VRC C
min
/dose, respectively, among which dexamethasone make the median of the VRC C
min
/dose ratio lower. As a result, when VRC was coadministrated with glucocorticoids, the proportion of VRC C
min
/dose in the subtherapeutic window was increased. Different CYP450 genotypes have different effects on the C
min
/dose of VRC. Mutations of
CYP2C19*2
and
*3
increased C
min
/dose of VRC, while
CYP2C19*17
and
CYP3A4
rs4646437 polymorphisms decreased C
min
/dose of VRC. The mutation of
CYP3A5
has no significant effect. Furthermore,
CYP2C19*17
mutants could strengthen the effects of glucocorticoids and decrease VRC C

/dose to a larger extent.
Conclusion:
Our study revealed that glucocorticoids reduced the C
min
/dose levels of VRC and different SNPs of CYP450 have different effects on the C
min
/dose ratio of VRC. Glucocorticoids and
CYP2C19*17
mutants had a synergistic effect on reducing VRC C
min
/dose. The present results suggested that when VRC is combined with glucocorticoids, we should pay more attention to the clinical efficacy of VRC, especially when
CYP2C19*17
mutants exist.
Brilliant colour displays and diverse feather morphologies that are often sexual ornaments are common throughout much of extant Avialae. Here we describe a new basal enantiornithine bird specimen ...recovered from the Early Cretaceous Jiufotang Formation of Liaoning Province in northeastern China. We present new information on the plumage of Bohaiornithidae as well as the first detailed colour reconstruction of an enantiornithine bird. The new specimen retains subadult skeletal characteristics, including periosteal pitting of the long bone epiphyses and unfused elements, while also preserving plumage evidence consistent with sexual maturity at the time of death. Exceptionally‐preserved feathers cover the body, including elongate crown feathers, body contour feathers, asymmetrically‐veined wing primaries, an alula and two elongate rachis‐dominated rectrices that may have been sexual ornaments. The crown, neck, and body contour feathers retain elongate melanosome morphologies associated with weakly iridescent colouration in extant feathers. We provide additional evidence of preserved melanin using Raman spectroscopy; a rapid, non‐destructive chemical technique. The new specimen provides data on skeletal ontogeny in the Bohaiornithidae as well as evidence for intraspecific communication functions of plumage.
Ornithomimosaurs (ostrich-mimic dinosaurs) are a common element of some Cretaceous dinosaur assemblages of Asia and North America. Here, we describe a new species of ornithomimosaur, Beishanlong ...grandis, from an associated, partial postcranial skeleton from the Aptian-Albian Xinminpu Group of northern Gansu, China. Beishanlong is similar to another Aptian-Albian ornithomimosaur, Harpymimus, with which it shares a phylogenetic position as more derived than the Barremian Shenzhousaurus and as sister to a Late Cretaceous clade composed of Garudimimus and the Ornithomimidae. Beishanlong is one of the largest definitive ornithomimosaurs yet described, though histological analysis shows that the holotype individual was still growing at its death. Together with the co-eval and sympatric therizinosaur Suzhousaurus and the oviraptorosaur Gigantraptor, Beishanlong provides evidence for the parallel evolution of gigantism in separate lineages of beaked and possibly herbivorous coelurosaurs within a short time span in Central Asia.
The fossil record of tyrannosauroid theropods is marked by a substantial temporal and morphological gap between small-bodied, Barremian taxa, and extremely large-bodied taxa from the latest ...Cretaceous. Here we describe a new tyrannosauroid, Xiongguanlong baimoensis n. gen. et sp., from the Aptian-Albian Xinminpu Group of western China that represents a phylogenetic, morphological, and temporal link between these disjunct portions of tyrannosauroid evolutionary history. Xiongguanlong is recovered in our phylogenetic analysis as the sister taxon to Tyrannosauridae plus Appalachiosaurus, and marks the appearance of several tyrannosaurid hallmark features, including a sharp parietal sagittal crest, a boxy basicranium, a quadratojugal with a flaring dorsal process and a flexed caudal edge, premaxillary teeth bearing a median lingual ridge, and an expanded axial neural spine surmounted by distinct processes at its corners. Xiongguanlong is characterized by a narrow and elongate muzzle resembling that of Alioramus. The slender, unornamented nasals of Xiongguanlong are inconsistent with recent hypotheses of correlated progression in tyrannosauroid feeding mechanics, and suggest more complex patterns of character evolution in the integration of feeding adaptations in tyrannosaurids. Body mass estimates for the full-grown holotype specimen of Xiongguanlong fall between those of Late Cretaceous tyrannosaurids and Barremian tyrannosauroids, suggesting that the trend of increasing body size observed in North American Late Cretaceous Tyrannosauridae may extend through the Cretaceous history of Tyrannosauroidea though further phylogenetic work is required to corroborate this.
Integumentary patterns and colors can differentiate species, sexes, and life changes and can inform on habitat and ecology. However, they are rarely preserved in the fossil record. Here, we report on ...an extremely well-preserved specimen of the Cretaceous bird
with unprecedented complexity, including small spots on the wings, crest, and throat. Morphological and chemical evidence suggest that these patterns are produced by melanin, but unusual preservation prevents assignment of specific colors. Based on comparisons with extant birds, these patterns were likely used for camouflage, although other functions including sexual signaling cannot be ruled out. Our data show that even more elaborate plumage patterns than the spangles in
and stripes in
were present at a relatively early stage of avian evolution, showing the significance of coloration and patterning to feather evolution.
Pterosaurs were a unique clade of flying reptiles that were contemporaries of dinosaurs in Mesozoic ecosystems. The Pterodactyloidea as the most species-diverse group of pterosaurs dominated the sky ...during Cretaceous time, but earlier phases of their evolution remain poorly known. Here, we describe a 160 Ma filter-feeding pterosaur from western Liaoning, China, representing the geologically oldest record of the Ctenochasmatidae, a group of exclusive filter feeders characterized by an elongated snout and numerous fine teeth. The new pterosaur took the lead of a major ecological transition in pterosaur evolution from fish-catching to filter-feeding adaptation, prior to the Tithonian (145–152 Ma) diversification of the Ctenochasmatidae. Our research shows that the rise of ctenochasmatid pterosaurs was followed by the burst of eco-morphological divergence of other pterodactyloid clades, which involved a wide range of feeding adaptations that considerably altered the terrestrial ecosystems of the Cretaceous world.
Lacustrine deposits exposed at Daohugou, Inner Mongolia, China, have yielded superbly preserved vertebrate fossils. The fossil beds were first misinterpreted as of Early Cretaceous age, based on ...alleged occurrences of key fossils of the Jehol Biota. Compelling evidence revealed by more rigorous research involving regional biostratigraphy, radiometric dating, and paleontology supports the Middle Jurassic age of the fossil beds. Despite the awesome evidence for the Middle Jurassic age of the Daohugou beds, the age dispute has been resurrected recently by invoking an overturned stratigraphic sequence. A careful review of the data, however, found no evidence that this sequence has been overturned. In addition, many of the assumptions, on which the conjecture of the fossil beds being post- Middle Jurassic is imprudently based, are self-contradictory or otherwise misleading. Thus, the post- Middle Jurassic age of the Daohugou beds as an unfounded conclusion can readily be dismissed.
