This article opens new perspectives on research into Slovenian non-material folk culture within the European context by focusing on song tradition and, comparatively, also on literature. Based on ...contemporary folklore and literary studies, this article seeks to interpret new cultural dynamics in Slovenian folk culture in the light of various concepts and theoretical discourses, such as archetypes (Jung, von Franz), culture and globalization (Beck), collective cultural memory (Halbwachs), authenticity (Bendix), identity (Honko), and intertextuality (Kristeva), and to connect it with common European folklore and literary tradition. It also aims to indicate new ways for placing Slovenian folklore and literature within the European context.

The Slovene ballad Animals Bury the Hunter is an animal narrative song of jocular character. It tells of the burial of a hunter & of a funeral procession not composed of humans but wild animals that ...seem to derive great joy from the event. The analysis of the song's 31 variants reveals the changes made to the song over the course of time, as it survived through different historical periods & spread throughout Slovenia. I attempt to show that the ballad was used as a model for painted beehive panels featuring the same motif. In addition to the analysis, I am concerned with the sociological & ethical elements of the ballad. The paper proposes at least three possible theses: (1) The song is part of the conception of a topsy-turvy world, where the roles & mutual relationships of people & animals are reversed in an ironic sociological view of the world. (2) The song is a critique of one class by another, ie, peasants mocking hunters who belong to a different social stratum. (3) The song is a representation of "pre-Cartesian" times, when animals were not "mere machines" without feelings, to be treated by man as objects with no ethical significance. Anhand von Überlieferungen wird die Gattung der slowenischen Ballade vorgestellt, wobei in Bezug auf Inhalt und Form soziologische, geschichtliche, ästhetische und andere Komponenten erörtert werden. ...Die in Balladen beschriebenen Handlungen, ihre Melodien und Botschaften lenken die Aufmerksamkeit des Hörers auf einen spezifischen Bereich volkstümlicher Kreativität. Die Geschichten, die in den meisten slowenischen Balladen erzählt werden, gewähren den heutigen Menschen einen Einblick in die Vergangenheit. Auf diese Weise wird Vergangenheit mit Gegenwart verknüpft und das Augenmerk des Hörers auf die Zukunft gerichtet. Am Übergang zum 3. Jahrtausend können folgende Gesichtspunkte untersucht werden: das Erbe der Volkskultur, auf das man bei der Feldforschung stöβt; die Treffen von Folkloresängern und Musikern in örtlichen Gemeinschaften; das Wiederaufblühen der Volksmusik; und traditionelle Volkslieder wie Fair Vida und King Mathias, die Teil der slowenischen Mythologie sind. Im Allgemeinen handelt es sich bei ihnen um einen nationalen Kanon, der innerhalb der Literatur, der Musik, der Politik und der slowenischen Gesellschaft auftaucht.
