Piezoelectric materials, which convert mechanical to electrical energy and vice versa, are typically characterized by the intimate coexistence of two phases across a morphotropic phase boundary. ...Electrically switching one to the other yields large electromechanical coupling coefficients. Driven by global environmental concerns, there is currently a strong push to discover practical lead-free piezoelectrics for device engineering. Using a combination of epitaxial growth techniques in conjunction with theoretical approaches, we show the formation of a morphotropic phase boundary through epitaxial constraint in lead-free piezoelectric bismuth ferrite (BiFeO3) films. Electric field–dependent studies show that a tetragonal-like phase can be reversibly converted into a rhombohedral-like phase, accompanied by measurable displacements of the surface, making this new lead-free system of interest for probe-based data storage and actuator applications.

Tumor hypoxia increases resistance to radiotherapy and systemic therapy. Our aim was to develop and validate a disease-agnostic and disease-specific CT (+FDG-PET) based radiomics hypoxia classification signature.
A total of 808 patients with imaging data were included: N = 100 training/N = 183 external validation cases for a disease-agnostic CT hypoxia classification signature, N = 76 training/N = 39 validation cases for the H&N CT signature and N = 62 training/N = 36 validation cases for the Lung CT signature. The primary gross tumor volumes (GTV) were manually defined by experts on CT. In order to dichotomize between hypoxic/well-oxygenated tumors a threshold of 20% was used for the 18F-HX4-derived hypoxic fractions (HF). A random forest (RF)-based machine-learning classifier/regressor was trained to classify patients as hypoxia-positive/ negative based on radiomic features.
A 11 feature “disease-agnostic CT model” reached AUC’s of respectively 0.78 (95% confidence interval CI, 0.62–0.94), 0.82 (95% CI, 0.67–0.96) and 0.78 (95% CI, 0.67–0.89) in three external validation datasets. A “disease-agnostic FDG-PET model” reached an AUC of 0.73 (0.95% CI, 0.49–0.97) in validation by combining 5 features. The highest “lung-specific CT model” reached an AUC of 0.80 (0.95% CI, 0.65–0.95) in validation with 4 CT features, while the “H&N-specific CT model” reached an AUC of 0.84 (0.95% CI, 0.64–1.00) in validation with 15 CT features. A tumor volume-alone model was unable to significantly classify patients as hypoxia-positive/ negative. A significant survival split (P = 0.037) was found between CT-classified hypoxia strata in an external H&N cohort (n = 517), while 117 significant hypoxia gene-CT signature feature associations were found in an external lung cohort (n = 80).
The disease-specific radiomics signatures perform better than the disease agnostic ones. By identifying hypoxic patients our signatures have the potential to enrich interventional hypoxia-targeting trials.
Although it has been known for some time that olfactory receptors (ORs) reside in spermatozoa, the function of these ORs is unknown. Here, we identified, cloned, and functionally expressed a ...previously undescribed human testicular OR, hOR17-4. With the use of ratiofluorometric imaging Ca2+signals were induced by a small subset of applied chemical stimuli, establishing the molecular receptive fields for the recombinantly expressed receptor in human embryonic kidney (HEK) 293 cells and the native receptor in human spermatozoa. Bourgeonal was a powerful agonist for both recombinant and native receptor types, as well as a strong chemoattractant in subsequent behavioral bioassays. In contrast, undecanal was a potent OR antagonist to bourgeonal and related compounds. Taken together, these results indicate that hOR17-4 functions in human sperm chemotaxis and may be a critical component of the fertilization process.

Here we investigate the effect of epitaxial strain on the electronic ordering and symmetry of BiMnO
3
to determine whether strain effects might explain the apparently contradictory experimental results regarding ferroelectricity. Using ab-initio methods, we calculate the polarization of BiMnO
3
under bi-axial strain in the pseudo-cubic (001) plane, examining both tensile and compressive values of strain. We find no significant polarization or re-ordering of Bi lone-pairs under experimentally achievable strain values, and conclude that BiMnO
3
remains centrosymmetric and non-polar.
Dental diseases are among the most important reasons for presenting guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus) and other rodents to veterinary clinics, but the aetiopathology of this disease complex is unclear. ...Clinicians tend to believe that the ever‐growing teeth of rabbits and rodents have a constant growth that needs to be worn down by the mastication of an appropriate diet. In this study, we tested the effect of four different pelleted diets of increasing abrasiveness due to both internal (phytoliths) and external abrasives (sand) or whole grass hay fed for 2 weeks each in random order to 16 guinea pigs on incisor growth and wear, and tooth length of incisors and cheek teeth. There was a positive correlation between wear and growth of incisors. Tooth lengths depended both on internal and external abrasives, but only upper incisors were additionally affected by the feeding of whole hay. Diet effects were most prominent in anterior cheek teeth, in particular M1 and m1. Cheek tooth angle did not become shallower with decreasing diet abrasiveness, suggesting that a lack of dietary abrasiveness does not cause the typical ‘bridge formation’ of anterior cheek teeth frequently observed in guinea pigs. The findings suggest that other factors than diet abrasiveness, such as mineral imbalances and in particular hereditary malocclusion, are more likely causes for dental problems observed in this species.
Multicenter studies are needed to demonstrate the clinical potential value of radiomics as a prognostic tool. However, variability in scanner models, acquisition protocols and reconstruction settings ...are unavoidable and radiomic features are notoriously sensitive to these factors, which hinders pooling them in a statistical analysis. A statistical harmonization method called ComBat was developed to deal with the "batch effect" in gene expression microarray data and was used in radiomics studies to deal with the "center-effect". Our goal was to evaluate modifications in ComBat allowing for more flexibility in choosing a reference and improving robustness of the estimation. Two modified ComBat versions were evaluated: M-ComBat allows to transform all features distributions to a chosen reference, instead of the overall mean, providing more flexibility. B-ComBat adds bootstrap and Monte Carlo for improved robustness in the estimation. BM-ComBat combines both modifications. The four versions were compared regarding their ability to harmonize features in a multicenter context in two different clinical datasets. The first contains 119 locally advanced cervical cancer patients from 3 centers, with magnetic resonance imaging and positron emission tomography imaging. In that case ComBat was applied with 3 labels corresponding to each center. The second one contains 98 locally advanced laryngeal cancer patients from 5 centers with contrast-enhanced computed tomography. In that specific case, because imaging settings were highly heterogeneous even within each of the five centers, unsupervised clustering was used to determine two labels for applying ComBat. The impact of each harmonization was evaluated through three different machine learning pipelines for the modelling step in predicting the clinical outcomes, across two performance metrics (balanced accuracy and Matthews correlation coefficient). Before harmonization, almost all radiomic features had significantly different distributions between labels. These differences were successfully removed with all ComBat versions. The predictive ability of the radiomic models was always improved with harmonization and the improved ComBat provided the best results. This was observed consistently in both datasets, through all machine learning pipelines and performance metrics. The proposed modifications allow for more flexibility and robustness in the estimation. They also slightly but consistently improve the predictive power of resulting radiomic models.
To assess the ability of helical computed tomography (CT) to differentiate regions of known mineral composition in typical, heterogeneous urinary stones. Interest is substantial in the urologic ...community in using radiologic imaging to determine accurately the composition of urinary calculi. Recent advances in CT make this a viable prospect, but the heterogeneity of most stones is a complicating factor.
The ability of micro-CT (a high-resolution laboratory instrument) to identify the mineral composition of stones was confirmed by calibrating micro-CT attenuation values to pure mineral regions of sliced stones using infrared microspectroscopy. Intact human urinary stones were then analyzed by micro-CT, and regions-of-interest of pure mineral were correlated with identical regions-of-interest from quad slice multi-detector row helical CT images. With helical CT, narrow slice widths were used to decrease volume-averaging errors, and bone windows were used so that internal stone structure was visible.
When stones were imaged using helical CT at narrow slice widths, mineral-specific regions-of-interest yielded nonoverlapping attenuation values for uric acid (566 to 632 Hounsfield units HU), struvite (862 to 944 HU), calcium oxalate (1416 to 1938 HU), and hydroxyapatite (2150 to 2461 HU).
High resolution helical CT yields unique attenuation values for common types of stone mineral, but proper windowing is required to localize regions of homogeneity. The results of this in vitro study suggest that high-resolution helical CT may be able to identify stone composition at patient diagnosis.
Micro computed tomography (micro CT) has been shown to provide exceptionally high quality imaging of the fine structural detail within urinary calculi. We tested the idea that micro CT might also be ...used to identify the mineral composition of urinary stones non-destructively.
Micro CT x-ray attenuation values were measured for mineral that was positively identified by infrared microspectroscopy (FT-IR). To do this, human urinary stones were sectioned with a diamond wire saw. The cut surface was explored by FT-IR and regions of pure mineral were evaluated by micro CT to correlate x-ray attenuation values with mineral content. Additionally, intact stones were imaged with micro CT to visualize internal morphology and map the distribution of specific mineral components in 3-D.
Micro CT images taken just beneath the cut surface of urinary stones showed excellent resolution of structural detail that could be correlated with structure visible in the optical image mode of FT-IR. Regions of pure mineral were not difficult to find by FT-IR for most stones and such regions could be localized on micro CT images of the cut surface. This was not true, however, for two brushite stones tested; in these, brushite was closely intermixed with calcium oxalate. Micro CT x-ray attenuation values were collected for six minerals that could be found in regions that appeared to be pure, including uric acid (3515 - 4995 micro CT attenuation units, AU), struvite (7242 - 7969 AU), cystine (8619 - 9921 AU), calcium oxalate dihydrate (13815 - 15797 AU), calcium oxalate monohydrate (16297 - 18449 AU), and hydroxyapatite (21144 - 23121 AU). These AU values did not overlap. Analysis of intact stones showed excellent resolution of structural detail and could discriminate multiple mineral types within heterogeneous stones.
Micro CT gives excellent structural detail of urinary stones, and these results demonstrate the feasibility of identifying and localizing most of the common mineral types found in urinary calculi using laboratory CT.
Human sperm chemotaxis is a critical component of the fertilization process, but the molecular basis for this behavior remains unclear. Recent evidence shows that chemotactic responses depend on ...activation of the sperm olfactory receptor, hOR17-4. Certain floral scents, including bourgeonal, activate hOR17-4, trigger pronounced Ca2+ fluxes, and evoke chemotaxis. Here, we provide evidence that hOR17-4 activation is coupled to a cAMP-mediated signaling cascade. Multidimensional protein identification technology was used to identify potential components of a G-protein-coupled cAMP transduction pathway in human sperm. These products included various membrane-associated adenylate cyclase (mAC) isoforms and the Golf-subunit. Using immunocytochemistry, specific mAC isoforms were localized to particular cell regions. Whereas mAC III occurred in the sperm head and midpiece, mAC VIII was distributed predominantly in the flagellum. In contrast, Golf was found mostly in the flagellum and midpiece. The observed spatial distribution patterns largely correspond to the spatiotemporal character of hOR17-4-induced Ca2+ changes. Behavioral and Ca2+ signaling responses of human sperm to bourgeonal were bioassayed in the presence, or absence, of the adenylate cyclase antagonist SQ22536. This specific agent inhibits particulate AC, but not soluble AC, activation. Upon incubation with SQ22536, cells ceased to exhibit Ca2+ signaling, chemotaxis, and hyperactivation (faster swim speed and flagellar beat rate) in response to bourgeonal. Particulate AC is therefore required for induction of hOR17-4-mediated human sperm behavior and represents a promising target for future design of contraceptive drugs.
It is generally assumed that animal species differ in physiological characteristics of their digestive tract. Because investigating digestive processes is often labour‐intensive, requiring lengthy ...adaptation and collection periods, comparisons are often made on the basis of data collated from different studies. We added a new data set on dietary crude fibre (CF) and macromineral (Na, K, Ca, P, Mg) composition and apparent digestibility (aD) of organic matter (OM) and macrominerals in rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus; a total of 180 measurements with 12 individuals and 10 different diets) to a literature data collection for rodents and domestic horses (Equus caballus). Significant negative relationships between dietary CF and aD OM were obtained, but the significant difference in digestive efficiency between rabbits and guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus) reported from studies where both species had been investigated under identical conditions were not detectable in the larger data collection. However, the 95% confidence interval of the negative slope of the CF–aD OM relationship did not overlap between domestic horses on the one hand, and rabbits and guinea pigs on the other hand, indicating a less depressing effect of CF in horses. Akaike's information criterion indicated that aD of a macromineral did not only depend on its concentration in the diet, but also on the individual and various other diet characteristics and the presence of other macrominerals, indicating complex interactions. The data indicate similar mechanisms in the absorption of macrominerals amongst rabbits, rodents and horses, with the exception of Na and K in guinea pigs and Ca in chinchillas (Chinchilla laniger) that should be further corroborated. In particular, the occurrence of high aD Ca in hindgut fermenters, regardless of whether they employ a digestive strategy of coprophagy or whether they have fossorial habits, suggests that this peculiarity might represent an adaptation to hindgut fermentation in general.
