Design and synthesis of high aspect ratio 2D nanosheets with surface having ultradense array of information-rich molecule such as DNA is extremely challenging. Herein, we report a universal strategy ...based on amphiphilicity-driven self-assembly for the crafting of high aspect ratio, 2D sheets that are densely surface-decorated with DNA. Microscopy and X-ray analyses have shown that the sheets are crystalline. The most unique feature of the sheets is DNA-directed surface addressability, which is demonstrated through the decoration of either faces of the sheet with gold nanoparticles through sequence-specific DNA hybridization. Our results suggest that this design strategy can be applied as a general approach for the synthesis of DNA decorated high aspect ratio sheets, which may find potential applications in materials science, drug delivery, and nanoelectronics.
Abstract
I have used high-precision photometry and astrometry from the early installment of the third data release of Gaia (EDR3) to perform a survey for members of the stellar populations within the ...Sco-Cen complex, which consist of Upper Sco, UCL/LCC, the V1062 Sco group, Ophiuchus, and Lupus. Among Gaia sources with
σ

< 1 mas, I have identified 10,509 candidate members of those populations. I have compiled previous measurements of spectral types, Li equivalent widths, and radial velocities for the candidates, which are available for 3169, 1420, and 1740 objects, respectively. In a subset of candidates selected to minimize field star contamination, I estimate that the contamination is ≲1% and the completeness is ∼90% at spectral types of ≲M6–M7 for the populations with low extinction (Upper Sco, V1062 Sco, UCL/LCC). I have used that cleaner sample to characterize the stellar populations in Sco-Cen in terms of their initial mass functions, ages, and space velocities. For instance, all of the populations in Sco-Cen have histograms of spectral types that peak near M4–M5, which indicates that they share similar characteristic masses for their initial mass functions (∼0.15–0.2
M
⊙
). After accounting for incompleteness, I estimate that the Sco-Cen complex contains nearly 10,000 members with masses above ∼0.01

. Finally, I also present new estimates for the intrinsic colors of young stars and brown dwarfs (≲20 Myr) in bands from Gaia EDR3, the Two Micron All Sky Survey, the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer, and the Spitzer Space Telescope.
Psychiatric diseases have a strong heritable component known to not be restricted to DNA sequence-based genetic inheritance alone but to also involve epigenetic factors in germ cells. Initial ...evidence suggested that sperm RNA is causally linked to the transmission of symptoms induced by traumatic experiences. Here, we show that alterations in long RNA in sperm contribute to the inheritance of specific trauma symptoms. Injection of long RNA fraction from sperm of males exposed to postnatal trauma recapitulates the effects on food intake, glucose response to insulin and risk-taking in adulthood whereas the small RNA fraction alters body weight and behavioural despair. Alterations in long RNA are maintained after fertilization, suggesting a direct link between sperm and embryo RNA.
Abstract
I have used high-precision photometry and astrometry from the third data release of Gaia to perform a survey for members of the Taurus star-forming region and young associations in its ...vicinity. This work has produced a new catalog of 532 adopted members of Taurus, which has only minor changes relative to the previous catalog from Esplin & Luhman. I have used the Gaia astrometry to divide the Taurus members into 13 groups that have distinct kinematics. Meanwhile, I have identified 1378 candidate members of seven associations near Taurus. All of these associations have histograms of spectral types that peak near M5 (∼0.15
M
⊙
), resembling other young populations in the solar neighborhood. For the Taurus groups and neighboring associations, I have estimated ages from their sequences of low-mass stars in Hertzsprung–Russell diagrams. Most of the Taurus groups have median ages of ∼1–3 Myr, while the associations have ages ranging from 13 to 56 Myr. I have used mid-infrared photometry from the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer to search for excess emission from circumstellar disks among the candidate members of the associations. Disks are detected for 51 stars, 20 of which are reported for the first time in this work. Some recent studies have proposed that samples of older stars (≳10 Myr) found in the vicinity of Taurus represent a distributed population that is associated with the Taurus cloud complex. However, I find that most of those stars have kinematics that are inconsistent with any relationship with Taurus.
Host immune peptides, including cathelicidins, have been reported to possess anticancer properties. We previously reported that LL-37, the only cathelicidin in humans, suppresses the development of ...colon cancer. In this study, the potential anticancer effect of FK-16, a fragment of LL-37 corresponding to residues 17 to 32, on cultured colon cancer cells was evaluated. FK-16 induced a unique pattern of cell death, marked by concurrent activation of caspase-independent apoptosis and autophagy. The former was mediated by the nuclear translocation of AIF and EndoG whereas the latter was characterized by enhanced expression of LC3-I/II, Atg5 and Atg7 and increased formation of LC3-positive autophagosomes. Knockdown of Atg5 or Atg7 attenuated the cytotoxicity of FK-16, indicating FK-16-induced autophagy was pro-death in nature. Mechanistically, FK-16 activated nuclear p53 to upregulate Bax and downregulate Bcl-2. Knockdown of p53, genetic ablation of Bax, or overexpression of Bcl-2 reversed FK-16-induced apoptosis and autophagy. Importantly, abolition of AIF/EndoG-dependent apoptosis enhanced FK-16-induced autophagy while abolition of autophagy augmented FK-16-induced AIF-/EndoG-dependent apoptosis. Collectively, FK-16 induces caspase-independent apoptosis and autophagy through the common p53-Bcl-2/Bax cascade in colon cancer cells. Our study also uncovered previously unknown reciprocal regulation between these two cell death pathways.
Background. A need for quadrivalent vaccines to cover both lineages of influenza B has been raised. Information on the circulation status of influenza B lineages and the associated hospitalization ...rates is important to assist evidence-based decision making. This retrospective study revealed the situation in a subtropical city over a 10-year period. Methods. Sequences of 268 influenza B isolates were analyzed to identify the circulating pool of virus lineages for each year. Hospital records and population census data were used to estimate annual age-specific hospitalization rates. Results. Cocirculation with 2 influenza B lineages was found in 9 of the 10 years. Only in 6 of the 10 years had the vaccine strain successfully matched with the lineage that was found in >50% of the circulating pool. Six years were predominated by one lineage (occupying >80% of the circulating pool), and these years had higher (average, 1.4-fold) hospitalization rates. Matching between vaccine and circulating lineage was achieved only in 2 of the 6 "predominated years." The Yamagata lineage accounted for most (5/6) of the predominated years. Overall, 24% of influenza admissions were due to influenza B, and influenza B contributed to a higher proportion (41.9%) among children and young teenagers (5–14 years old). Conclusions. Cocirculation with 2 influenza B lineages is common in the subtropical region. To predict the next predominant lineage proves to be difficult. Influenza B accounts for a substantial fraction of influenza-associated hospitalizations, especially among children and young teenagers. Quadrivalent vaccines may improve the effectiveness of influenza vaccination programs.
Density matrix embedding theory (DMET) (Knizia, G.; Chan, G. K.-L. Phys. Rev. Lett. 2012, 109, 186404) provides a theoretical framework to treat finite fragments in the presence of a surrounding ...molecular or bulk environment, even when there is significant correlation or entanglement between the two. In this work, we give a practically oriented and explicit description of the numerical and theoretical formulation of DMET. We also describe in detail how to perform self-consistent DMET optimizations. We explore different embedding strategies with and without a self-consistency condition in hydrogen rings, beryllium rings, and a sample SN2 reaction. The source code for the calculations in this work can be obtained from https://github.com/sebwouters/qc-dmet.
Objective
There is some evidence that clozapine is significantly underutilised. Also, clozapine use is thought to vary by country, but so far no international study has assessed trends in clozapine ...prescribing. Therefore, this study aimed to assess clozapine use trends on an international scale, using standardised criteria for data analysis.
Method
A repeated cross‐sectional design was applied to data extracts (2005–2014) from 17 countries worldwide.
Results
In 2014, overall clozapine use prevalence was greatest in Finland (189.2/100 000 persons) and in New Zealand (116.3/100 000), and lowest in the Japanese cohort (0.6/100 000), and in the privately insured US cohort (14.0/100 000). From 2005 to 2014, clozapine use increased in almost all studied countries (relative increase: 7.8–197.2%). In most countries, clozapine use was highest in 40–59‐year‐olds (range: 0.6/100 000 (Japan) to 344.8/100 000 (Finland)). In youths (10–19 years), clozapine use was highest in Finland (24.7/100 000) and in the publicly insured US cohort (15.5/100 000).
Conclusion
While clozapine use has increased in most studied countries over recent years, clozapine is still underutilised in many countries, with clozapine utilisation patterns differing significantly between countries. Future research should address the implementation of interventions designed to facilitate increased clozapine utilisation.
Three-dimensional surface registration transforms multiple three-dimensional data sets into the same coordinate system so as to align overlapping components of these sets. Recent surveys have covered ...different aspects of either rigid or nonrigid registration, but seldom discuss them as a whole. Our study serves two purposes: 1) To give a comprehensive survey of both types of registration, focusing on three-dimensional point clouds and meshes and 2) to provide a better understanding of registration from the perspective of data fitting. Registration is closely related to data fitting in which it comprises three core interwoven components: model selection, correspondences and constraints, and optimization. Study of these components 1) provides a basis for comparison of the novelties of different techniques, 2) reveals the similarity of rigid and nonrigid registration in terms of problem representations, and 3) shows how overfitting arises in nonrigid registration and the reasons for increasing interest in intrinsic techniques. We further summarize some practical issues of registration which include initializations and evaluations, and discuss some of our own observations, insights and foreseeable research trends.
Recent advances in small-bowel endoscopy such as capsule endoscopy have shown that non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) frequently damage the small intestine, with the prevalence rate of ...mucosal breaks of around 50% in chronic users. A significant proportion of patients with NSAIDs-induced enteropathy are asymptomatic, but some patients develop symptomatic or complicated ulcers that need therapeutic intervention. Both inhibition of prostaglandins due to the inhibition of cyclooxygenases and mitochondrial dysfunction secondary to the topical effect of NSAIDs play a crucial role in the early process of injury. As a result, the intestinal barrier function is impaired, which allows enterobacteria to invade the mucosa. Gram-negative bacteria and endogenous molecules coordinate to trigger inflammatory cascades via Toll-like receptor 4 to induce excessive expression of cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor-α and to activate NLRP3 inflammasome, a multiprotein complex that processes pro-interleukin-1β into its mature form. Finally, neutrophils accumulate in the mucosa, resulting in intestinal ulceration. Currently, misoprostol is the only drug that has a proven beneficial effect on bleeding small intestinal ulcers induced by NSAIDs or low-dose aspirin, but its protection is insufficient. Therefore, the efficacy of the combination of misoprostol with other drugs, especially those targeting the innate immune system, should be assessed in the next step.
