U razdoblju između dvaju svjetskih ratova među ključnim čimbenicima kulturnog života u gradu Varaždinu bila je Varaždinska gimnazijska ekstenza. Domaća inteligencija okupljena oko jezgre koju su ...činili profesori varaždinske Gimnazije, tijekom dva i pol mjeseca 1923. godine, priredila je Kulturno-historijsku izložbu grada Varaždina. To je tada bila prva takva izložba u Kraljevini SHS koja je izazvala veliko zanimanje stručnjaka i javnosti. U razdoblju od 14.- 22. srpnja 1923. godine, bila je postavljena u osam velikih prostorija varaždinske Gimnazije, predstavljajući bogatu kulturno-povijesnu ostavštinu grada Varaždina i njegove okolice, nastalu i očuvanu tijekom proteklih stoljeća.
Izuzetan uspjeh Kulturno-historijske izložbe grada Varaždina poslužio je kao po-
poticaj za osnivanje varaždinskog Muzealnog društva čiji je primarni cilj bio osnivanje Gradskog muzeja Varaždin. Njegova realizacija uspješno je završena dvije godine kasnije u okviru trodnevne proslave obilježavanja tisućgodišnjice hrvatskog kraljevstva.
After the implementation of the new educational reform (informally known as the Thun reform) in Gimnazija Varaždin, according to its requirements the school started publishing their annual reports. ...They were issued for about one hundred years from 1852 to 1944, after the end of each school year. Their contents entailed the entire activity overview of Gimnazija Varaždin and the accomplishments of their teachers and students throughout the past year. Due to the value of the data they contain, they are an exceptional source for researching the history of the school, the past of the city of Varaždin and Croatian education in general. An additional value of the reports are professional and scientific papers that cover a variety of topics from language and literature, history, art, culture, pedagogy, and numerous disciplines in the field of natural sciences. Those were usually published at the beginning of the report by teaching staff of the school. The results of their research work often represented a significant contribution to the study of the past, culture, or natural features of the Varaždin region and even today represent a quality basis and starting point for contemporary research in these areas.

Učeničko društvo Svačić počelo je djelovati 1906. godine kao tamburaški zbor unutar
varaždinske Gimnazije, a ubrzo je kao organizirano tamburaško društvo nastupalo i izvan
škole. Pod vodstvom prof. ...Milana Stahuljaka oblikovani su kvalitetan tamburaški i pjevački
zbor te salonski orkestar koji su do ljeta 1913. godine, priređivali glazbeno-deklamatorne
produkcije povremeno dopunjavane amaterskim predstavama i organiziranim plesom.
Bez Svačićevog sudjelovanja ubrzo je postala nezamisliva svaka ozbiljnija priredba
u Gimnaziji, a njegovi programi znatno su obogatili kulturnu i zabavnu ponudu u gradu.
Pred Prvi svj. rat ulogu Svačićevog zborovođe preuzeo je prof. Tomislav Miškulin pod
čijim je vodstvom ova djelatnost nadopunjena izuzetno kvalitetnim koncertnim aktivnostima.
Čim su to političke okolnosti dopustile, Svačićevi su nastupi, tijekom i nakon rata,
pomogli prikupljanju novca za pomoć siromašnim gimnazijalcima i ratnim stradalnicima.
Zalaganjem Milana Kamana, novog ravnatelja varaždinske Gimnazije, diktatorski
režim kralja Aleksandra je 1930. ipak dozvolio osnivanje Varaždinskog gimnazijskog udruženja
„Svačić“ s ciljem da lakše kontrolira izvannastavne aktivnosti u školi. Rad udruženja
propisan je Pravilima potvrđenim od Ministarstva prosvjete i organiziran je kroz sekcije.
U početku su utemeljene glazbena, znanstvena i literarna, a sljedećih godina oformljene
su sportska, likovna šahovska i filatelistička sekcija. Nastavni savjet imenovao je profesore
voditelje sekcija koje su održavale radne sastanke pripremajući programe za tzv.
sijela, priredbe putem kojih su svoj rad predstavljale unutar škole ili na nivou grada, a
povremeno su Gimnaziju predstavljale i na višim razinama. Pritom se posebno isticala
sportska sekcija pod vodstvom prof. Zvonimira Suligoja koja se, uz lokalne manifestacije
predstavljala na državnim sletovima. Glazbena sekcija pod vodstvom prof. Tomislava
Miškulina je svoje koncertne programe predstavljala u Hrvatskom glazbenom zavodu i
zagrebačkoj katedrali. Literarna sekcija je učeničke radove povremeno objavljivala u zagrebačkim
književnim revijama, a samostalno je izdavala učenički list Svačić. Zahvaljujući
njihovoj aktivnosti kulturni, zabavni i društveni život u Gimnaziji i Varaždinu 30-ih godina
20. stoljeća bio je znatno bogatiji i kvalitetniji. No promjenom političkih odnosa neposredno
pred Drugi svjetski rat, rad ove udruge bio je ugašen.
Student association Svačić was founded in 1906 as a tamburitza orchestra operating within Varaždin Gymnasium and later it was converted into a tamburitza music association that held concerts outside ...school as well. Led by teacher Milan Stahuljak it consisted of a high-quality tamburitza orchestra and choir as well as a chamber orchestra. By summer 1913 they used to organize music and declamatory productions which were sometimes complemented with amateur shows and organized ballroom dances. Soon thereafter Svačić became one of the must-have participants of all the important events in Gymnasium, and their programs added new qualities to the cultural and entertainment offer in Varaždin. Before World War I teacher Tomislav Miškulin became their choirmaster and he put special emphasis on concert activities of the association. As soon as the political circumstances became more favorable (during and after the war) Svačić performances aided significantly in raising resources for the poor Gymnasium students and casualties of war. As a consequence of the persistent work by Milan Kaman, the new head of Varaždin Gymansium, the dictatorial regime of the king Aleksandar eventually allowed the foundation of Varaždin Gymnasium association „Svačić“ in 1930 so that they may supervise extracurricular activities of the school. The activity of the association was defined by a rulebook („Pravilnik“) which was approved by the Ministry of Education and it was set up through various sections. The first sections to be founded were the music, science, and literary sections, and in the upcoming years sports, visual arts, chess and philatelic sections were set up as well. The board of teachers appointed teachers who were leaders of particular sections which in turn held meetings where they elaborated programs for the so-called soirees. Those were events where sections presented their activities within the school or for the general population. Sometimes they even represented the school on a more formal level as well.

As a part of Gimnazija Varaždin, Youth Club V3 was named after and founded on the 21st of September 1965 at the anniversary of the plight of V3 (fifth three) class of Kragujevac students. At first ...its activities were confined to the former Gimnazija drawing room which was at the time the biggest room in the school. After the reconstruction process of the Gimnazija building in the period between 1971 and 1973, aided by student volunteers, the basement of the school was refurbished for the purposes of the club activities. It continued to flourish until the start of the war which in 1990s marked the collapse of Yugoslavia and contributed to the establishment of the indepedent Republic of Croatia. As a student club which had only limited autonomy within the school, the club developed a rich and varied plan of activities which entailed the organization of public events, cultural and entertainment events intended for Gimnazija students and general public as well. Thanks to its own earnings, the club was partially independent in terms of its finances and its activities were mostly organized independently by the students with an indirect supervision of the school management. The club organized various spectacles for its students which were delivered by distinguished artists, writers, musicians and music groups, scientists, athletes, political activists and other important figures from the entire territory of Yugoslavia. Gimnazija students were thus offered not only a high-quality activity plan for their free time, but also a form of entertainment because the club would regularly, once a week set up disco-evenings as it was the only discoclub in Varaždin for many years. After the beginning of the War of Independence and the newly emerged social, political and economic system in the early 1990s, the activity of the youth club V3 was spontaneously discontinued. Its emptied premises were afterwards used by the Gimnazija management for a fast food facility catering to its students.
Skautska organizacija na varaždinskoj Gimnaziji bila je utemeljena na inicijativu školskih
vlasti početkom Prvog svjetskog rata, neposredno pred početak školske godine 1914./15.
Njezina svrha bila je ...pružanje pomoći pri funkcioniranju vojnih i državnih službi u ratnim
uvjetima. Pomažući gradskim i državnim službama, skauti su organizirali dežurstva i
kurirsku djelatnost na biciklima. Vojnicima su osiguravali okrjepu pri prolasku kroz Varaždin
i snalaženje pri boravku u gradu. Posebno značajna bila je pomoć skauta pri zbrinjavanju
ranjenika. Nakon završenog bolničkog tečaja, tijekom prve ratne godine obavezno su pomagali
pri prebacivanju ranjenika sa željezničkog kolodvora u bolnice, njegovanju i održavanju
kontakata s obiteljima. U svrhu sprečavanja zaraza, prvo je obustavljena njihova pomoć pri
zbrinjavanju ranjenika, a do kraja školske godine zamrla je njihova cjelokupna aktivnost.
The Scout organization that operated in Gimnazija – Varaždin was founded upon the initiative of the educational authorities at the onset of World War I, at the very beginning of school year ...1914/1915. Its purpose was to provide help with the operation of military and civil services during war period. By helping municipal and state services, the Scouts organized watches and courier activities on bicycles. They provided soldiers with refreshment while traversing Varaždin, as well as orientation assistance while they were stationed in the town. One of the most crucial services provided by the Scouts was helping wounded soldiers. Upon the completion of a healthcare course, during the first year of the War their basic duty was to assist with the transfer of casualties from the train station to hospitals, as well as to nurture the wounded soldiers and maintain contact with their families. In order to prevent the outbreak of diseases, at first their caretaking activity was discontinued, and by the end of the year their overall activity subsided.
During the first two war years, voluntary work of the Varaždin youth was subject to absolute control of the authorities. Their activity came down to collecting money for aiding casualties of war, ...organizing humanitarian events as well as collecting clothes and scarce materials. The organization and realization of the mentioned activities was performed by students and teachers from all public elementary and high schools in Varaždin to the best of their abilities. During the last two years of the war, Austria-Hungary experienced a liberalization of social and political life. This fact led to a reactivation of the Varaždin Academic Youth Club Tomislav, which soon revived its cooperation with high-school students, especially Gymnasium students. Until the end of the world war, what followed was a period of intense political, cultural and educational activity organized through mass public lectures as well as concerts performed by the Tomislav choir and orchestra in Varaždin and nearby villages. The profit earned through those events was intended for helping orphans, widows and families of the soldiers killed in action, war invalids and students from the Međimurje region who were schooled in Varaždin. The mentioned events were aimed at raising the national awareness of the population and overthrowing the regime, i.e. finding a new way of solving the national issue within the South Slavic community.
In summer months of 1905 a group of Varaždin democrat students founded the Croatian Academic Youth Club Fidelitas which was later renamed as Tomislav in 1907.The purpose of the club was the ...development of social activities and the promotion of teaching activities amongst its members and general public. In the following ten years the club developed a rich and systematic activity on three different levels: the organization of cultural and entertainment events, the organization of non-academic public lectures and offering literacy courses.In order to attract the attention of Varaždin public, academicians used to spend their free time during the Christmas and Easter holidays by organizing Drama nights, musical and literary programs, the so-called jour fxe, folk summer parties, regency dances and concerts. Through the organization of the mentioned events they made a contribution to the cultural and social life, as well as provided the means necessary for humanitarian activity and the organization of all other activities. The purpose of giving public non-academic lectures was to introduce the general public to new advances in various fields of science and art, in order to raise general level of education of the population. As a consequence of organizational difficulties as well as political and ideological conflicts with the local authorities, the mentioned activity was eventually reduced to only several organized lectures throughout 1907 and 1908. However, the literacy improvement activity was far more successful. In order to improve literacy, the academicians organized regular courses for the illiterate people, and eventually they managed to run the courses during the academic breaks. Therefore, winter courses were normally given during Christmas break and the spring courses during Easter breaks.The usual duration of the course was several weeks and the course was normally held in Varaždin public schools. The courses were free of charge for the students because all the expenses were covered by the Academic club. Despite the fact that they were trying to stay politically neutral, Varaždin academicians were engaged in the preparation and organization of massive student strike against viceroy Slavko Cuvaj in 1912. Supported by Croatian Academic Youth Club Tomislav, a one-day student strike was held on March the 14th and the Varaždin youth joined the general strike of Croatian youth which was held on the 19th of March, 1912.Following the official ban of all associations that was introduced at the onset of World War I, unfortunately the club had to suspend all legal activities for a couple of years.
