The emergence of gay pride politics in Argentina takes places in the 1960s and 1970s in the context of the tensions between medical and criminological discourses on homosexuality, which respectively ...proposed that homosexuality was an immorality that should be criminally punished or an illness that could be treated. The conclusion is that, faced with an increase in police violence, maricas, gay men and transgender people tactically appropriated medical discourses, identifying themselves as sick and allying with medical doctors in their attempts to decriminalize sexual inversion. Then, in the context of the climate of cultural modernization, they would use the pretensions of scientific objectivity of medicine to demand the de-pathologization of homosexuality, abandoning the discourse of victimization, narrating their experiences as joyful, and mobilizing their base through the category of pride. The paper is based on the historiographic analysis of an extensive corpus of mass-circulation press, political organizations' material, medical treatises and first-person documents.
El artículo analiza las transformaciones en las noticias periodísticas sobre homicidios ocurridos en encuentros íntimos entre varones, estudiando cómo repercute en ellas la paulatina aceptación de la ...homosexualidad como una diferencia válida en Argentina en la segunda mitad del siglo XX. Por un lado, se indagarán las condiciones sociales de producción de la noticia ligadas a las transformaciones de la última transición democrática y a la emergencia del activismo homosexual en la arena pública. Por otro, se estudiarán los efectos sociales de estas noticias en la regulación de las expresiones homoeróticas y en los diferentes modos de entender la homosexualidad. Se concluirá que el ingreso de los homosexuales al terreno de la ciudadanía limita su presentación como un otro a ser abolido, pero habilita nuevas regulaciones que desincentivarán las expresiones escandalosas, promiscuas y afeminadas de la homosexualidad.
La investigación reconstruye las condiciones de emergencia de los modos de vida travestis entre las décadas de 1950 y 1980. La hipótesis principal será que tanto lo travesti como lo gay son ...producciones contemporáneas que tuvieron su génesis en las culturas maricas de antaño a través de un proceso de diferenciación mutua. Este proceso requirió como condición de posibilidad la escisión de la identidad sexual y de la identidad de género —antes indisociablemente imbricadas— como dos dimensiones independientes y autónomas. El trabajo recorrerá las transformaciones en la sexualidad y en los usos del género de maricas y travestis. Se analizará como la incorporación de saberes y prácticas sobre la manipulación del cuerpo y la impostación de la feminidad en carnavales y cabarets abrieron un espacio de posibilidad para la emergencia de la experiencia travesti contemporánea. Sostendré que el surgimiento de lo travesti es paralelo a la emergencia de las identidades gais a partir de un proceso simultáneo de diferenciación transfóbico que requirió la negación y el repudio de las travestis por parte de estos últimos. La investigación se basa en el análisis historiográfico de un corpus diverso de materiales culturales, hemerográficos y testimoniales.
This article analyzes the social transformations converging in “the revolution of LGBT rights” in Argentina. Unlike other short-term perspectives focusing on the strategies of LGBT organizations and ...on sudden and recent shifts in politics, our study concentrates on the historical transformations of varying length that established the conditions under which the struggle for same-sex marriage could succeed. Among other trends, we will analyze the changes in family structure, the relation between same-sex marriage and Argentine national identity at the end of the 19th century, the decline of religion, and the transformation of male homosexual subculture over the four decades prior to 2010 when same sex marriage was passed.
This paper examines the articulation of race, class, gender, and politics in erotic magazines during the Argentine and Peruvian destapes in the transition from dictatorial to democratic rule at the ...turn to the 1980s. We argue that porn, as a genre, was not limited to a niche of readers seeking to use the magazines only for erotic purposes. In Peru, porn was one of the main agents in the opposition to military rule, and it only became a separate, autonomous genre devoid of politics with the coming of democracy. The emergence of magazines focused mostly on eroticism developed as editors attempted to lure readers among recent migrants from the Sierra who lived in the pueblos jóvenes (squatter settlements) in Lima. In this context, the audience demanded pictures of local women to replace foreign white female nudes. In Argentina porn became a crucial aspect of democratic politics, understood as a tool to overcome inhibitions, develop a self-exploration, and undermine traditional mores while fostering democracy. Driven by an impulse to emulate the alleged open-mindedness of Europe and the US, Argentine porn cemented white middle-class identity at a time of economic decline. In this context, Argentine erotic magazines praised sexual experimentation as courageous and gave voice to women, gays, and lesbians. Our approach combines social, political, and cultural history focusing on how the readership shaped magazines and at times achieved significant editorial changes. Through the study of porn we offer new insights regarding the transition to democracy in late Cold War Latin America.

El artículo problematiza la discusión prostitución/trabajo sexual en relación con la historia del sexo compensado entre varones en Latinoamérica en el siglo XX. Por un lado, se analiza cómo los cambios que afectaron al sexo compensado entre varones resultan indisociables de las transformaciones en la identidad homosexual. Por otro lado, se problematiza cómo el estudio de esta historia puede aportar herramientas para repensar las discusiones políticas acerca del estatus de la prostitución en relación con las tensiones entre abolicionismo y regulacionismo.
The article analyzes the transformations in the news about homicides that took place in intimate encounters between men, inquiring how the acceptance of homosexuality as a valid difference in ...Argentina in the second half of the 20th century affects them. On the one hand, the social conditions of the news production, in the context of the transformations of the last democratic transition and the emergence of homosexual activism in the public arena, is analyzed. On the other hand, it is studied the social effects of this news on the regulation of homoerotic expressions and on the different ways of understanding homosexuality. The article concludes that the entry of homosexuals into the field of citizenship limits their representation as one “other” to be abolished but enables new regulations that will discourage scandalous, promiscuous and effeminate expressions of homosexuality.

Although homonationalism is a fundamental category in queer studies, it has never been used to understand the history of the Argentine lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender movement and the emergence ...of a hegemonic queer memory based on the self-representation of Argentina as a “European-like” and “white” nation that often claims to be different from “the rest” of Latin America. This article examines the history of the Argentine construction of whiteness to understand hegemonic queer memory today and analyze why the 1976–1983 dictatorship has been hyper-memorialized, while state violence against queer people in democratic times is downplayed. We also refer to homonationalism to understand the success of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender rights revolution and present a discussion of the relationship between lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender politics and the construction of queer memory. As homonationalism shaped the formation of a hegemonic queer memory in the twenty-first century, alternative memories of police harassment of travestis and homosexual men after and before the dictatorship have been hidden in plain sight through reframing, displacement, temporal transpositions, and other forms of scripting.
El fracaso que el Frente de Liberación Homosexual argentino experimenta en sus intentos de aliarse con la izquierda partidaria en los setenta contrasta con la rápida y sinérgica articulación con el ...trotskismo que el movimiento homosexual logra en Brasil. Este trabajo analizará las políticas de alianzas del Frente argentino y de la Facción Homosexual de Convergencia Socialista brasilera estudiando su interrelación con las políticas de género y sexualidad que desarrolló la izquierda, las diferentes etapas por las que atravesaban los aparatos represivos en cada país, las conexiones transnacionales entre organizaciones y los momentos de la izquierda a nivel global. Se analizará en particular el rol del trotskismo, el cual ofreció mayores oportunidades coyunturales de alianza con los homosexuales que otras corrientes del movimiento obrero. La investigación se basará en el análisis de un corpus documental diverso, que incluye fuentes personales de algunos de los activistas y entrevistas personales en profundidad.
