The three main academic dictionaries of Romanian, DA-DLR, DEX and DELR, record a number of words coined by lexical blending, a process defined in Romanian linguistics as the fusion of two words that ...have a semantic affinity (usually synonyms or near-synonyms). Relying on the general criteria for any etymological research, i.e., the formal criterion, semantic congruity, circulation of words, etc., as well as on the specific features of lexical blending, we suggest other etymological solutions for 38 words registered as lexical blends.
"The article focuses on Voltaire’s Le tocsin des rois, composed at Catherine the Great’s request, during the Russian-Turkish War, at the end of 1771. In 1772–1774, the text was translated into ...Romanian by Toma Dimitriu, a Greek from Kastoria who had established in Moldova in 1758 and who authored numerous translations, mostly from Greek, but also from French. Dimitriu’s still unedited rendition of Le tocsin des rois is one of the oldest translations from French into Romanian. This research presents the morpho-syntactic and lexical features of the text, discusses the methodological difficulties raised by Dimitriu’s translation techniques, and sheds light onto an unknown part of the history of the influence of the French literature onto the Romanian one."
This article deals with the description of certain aspects of the complementiser system in Istro-Romanian (hereinafter IR), a severely endangered Romance variety. The prototypical IR complementisers ...are ke ('that'), neca (subjunctive marker), and in rarer occurrences se ('that/if'). Their main features are their high degree of heterogeneity, as well as their occurrence in various syntactic configurations that either makes IR pattern with Daco-Romanian (its closest sister), or sets IR apart across Romance. Our analysis is carried out on a corpus made of: Traian Cantemir's Texte istroromâne (data collected during 1932-1933), Sextil Pușcariu's Studii istroromâne. Texte I (1906-1926), Sârbu, R., V. Frățilă's Dialectul istroromân (1982-1996). Among the situations at which we will take a closer look, we should mention the occurrence of the complementiser ke 'that' in places where Daco-Romanian and other Romance varieties would not use it or would use it differently.
This paper represents a preliminary acoustic analysis of filler particles in terms of voice quality (i.e., modal vs. creaky phonation). The main research questions addressed in this study revolve ...around which particular voice parameters are indicative of (non)modal phonation of fillers used by healthy speakers of Standard Romanian, and whether the function of the filler particle varies with different voice qualities. The analysis is carried out on Romanian connected speech data extracted from the Ro-Phon corpus (non-pathological speech), an open-access linguistic resource developed during our postdoctoral research project financed by UEFISCDI (2020 – 2022).
The present paper attempts to reconstruct the life and work of monk Raphael from Hurezi Monastery in the context of both his activity from Oltenia (The Diocese of Râmnic and Hurezi Monastery) and ...from Moldova (Dragomirna Monastery).Born around 1725, Radu became monk at Hurezi Monastery on the 2nd of April 1754, changing his name to Raphael. In 1781 he was named hegumenos of Hurezi. Close to his death (circa 1791), he received the great schema, becoming hieroschemamonk Roman. His intellectual activity is remarkable, scoping the production of more than 20 Romanian manuscripts, the correction of the Octoechos (1763), the Psalter (1764, 1779), the Anthologhion Prayer Book (1766) and the Menologies (1776-1780) printed in the Diocese of Râmnic, the emendation of texts translated from Slavonic and Greek, the production of short poems and the instruction of young monks.
This paper focuses on a construction attested in Old Romanian and Lipovan Romanian, but unavailable in standard Modern Romanian: the use of cine ‘who’ as a relative pronoun in headed relative ...clauses. We put forth the hypothesis that this structure is an effect of language contact. In particular, the interrogative cine ‘who’ acquired its relative value and the possibility to be used in headed relative clauses by grammatical replication of the Old Church Slavonic equivalent, respectively of the Russian equivalent. Although the two scenarios appear to be similar, the two varieties followed two distinct diachronic paths.
