Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and conduct disorder (CD) are common externalizing disorders. Despite previous research demonstrating that both are longitudinally associated with ...adverse outcomes, there have been no systematic reviews examining all of the available evidence linking ADHD and CD with a range of health and psychosocial outcomes.
Electronic databases (EMBASE, Medline, and PsycINFO) were searched for studies published from 1980 up to March 2015. Published cohort and case-control studies were included if they reported a longitudinal association between ADHD or CD and adverse outcomes with a minimum follow-up of 2 years. Outcomes with sufficient data were pooled in a random effects meta-analysis to give overall odds ratios (ORs) with corresponding 95% CIs.
Of the 278 studies assessed, 114 met inclusion criteria and 98 were used in subsequent meta-analyses. ADHD was associated with adverse outcomes including academic achievement (e.g. failure to complete high school; odds ratio OR = 3.7, 95% CIs 2.0-7.0), other mental and substance use disorders (e.g. depression; OR = 2.3, 1.5-3.7), criminality (e.g. arrest; OR = 2.4, 1.5-3.8), and employment (e.g., unemployment; OR = 2.0, 1.0-3.9). CD was associated with outcomes relating to academic achievement (e.g. failure to complete high school; OR = 2.7, 1.5-4.7), other mental and substance use disorders (e.g., illicit drug use; OR = 2.1, 1.7-2.6), and criminality (e.g. violence; OR = 3.5, 2.3-5.3).
This study demonstrated that ADHD and CD are associated with disability beyond immediate health loss. Although the analyses could not determine the mechanisms behind these longitudinal associations, they demonstrate the importance of addressing ADHD and CD early in life so as to potentially avert a wide range of future adverse outcomes.
This paper studies the multiplicity-correction effect of standard Bayesian variable-selection priors in linear regression. Our first goal is to clarify when, and how, multiplicity correction happens ...automatically in Bayesian analysis, and to distinguish this correction from the Bayesian Ockham's-razor effect. Our second goal is to contrast empirical-Bayes and fully Bayesian approaches to variable selection through examples, theoretical results and simulations. Considerable differences between the two approaches are found. In particular, we prove a theorem that characterizes a surprising aymptotic discrepancy between fully Bayes and empirical Bayes. This discrepancy arises from a different source than the failure to account for hyperparameter uncertainty in the empirical-Bayes estimate. Indeed, even at the extreme, when the empirical-Bayes estimate converges asymptotically to the true variable-inclusion probability, the potential for a serious difference remains.
This paper examines the impact of Brexit on UK financial services policy, explaining recent reforms to the domestic financial regulatory framework and assessing the prospects for future divergence ...from EU rules. Deploying the lens of de-Europeanisation, we show that the failure to include financial services in the final UK-EU Trade and Cooperation Agreement necessitated major institutional changes. By contrast, there has been very limited change to date with respect to policy, while the government's ambitions for a 'Big Bang 2.0' package of regulatory reforms have been significantly scaled back. Drawing on insights from the political economy of finance, we argue that this process has been shaped by contested adaptational pressures mediated by three key variables: business unity, financial stability, and administrative capacity. The result is an emerging pattern of differentiated de-Europeanisation in financial services, ranging from intentional regulatory divergence to active alignment with EU rules.

Optimization of compound lipophilicity is a key aspect of drug discovery. The aim of this work was to compare the lipophilicity modulations induced by 16 distinct known and novel fluoroalkyl motifs ...on three parent models. Fifty fluorinated compounds, with 28 novel experimental aliphatic log P values, are involved in discussing various lipophilicity trends. As well as confirming known trends, a number of novel lipophilicity-reducing motifs are introduced. Tactics to reduce lipophilicity are discussed, such as “motif extensions” and “motif rearrangements”, including with concomitant extension of the carbon chain, as well as one- and two-fluorine ‘deletions’ within perfluoroalkyl groups. Quantum chemical log P calculations (SMD-MN15) based on solvent-dependent three-dimensional (3D) conformational analysis gave excellent correlations with experimental values, superior to Clog P predictions based on 2D structural motifs. The availability of a systematic collection of data based on a small number of parent molecules illustrates the relative lipophilicity modulations of aliphatic fluorination motifs.

Model-based analysis of data from quantitative reverse-transcription PCR (qRT-PCR) is potentially more powerful and versatile than traditional methods. Yet existing model-based approaches cannot ...properly deal with the higher sampling variances associated with low-abundant targets, nor do they provide a natural way to incorporate assumptions about the stability of control genes directly into the model-fitting process.
In our method, raw qPCR data are represented as molecule counts, and described using generalized linear mixed models under Poisson-lognormal error. A Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithm is used to sample from the joint posterior distribution over all model parameters, thereby estimating the effects of all experimental factors on the expression of every gene. The Poisson-based model allows for the correct specification of the mean-variance relationship of the PCR amplification process, and can also glean information from instances of no amplification (zero counts). Our method is very flexible with respect to control genes: any prior knowledge about the expected degree of their stability can be directly incorporated into the model. Yet the method provides sensible answers without such assumptions, or even in the complete absence of control genes. We also present a natural Bayesian analogue of the "classic" analysis, which uses standard data pre-processing steps (logarithmic transformation and multi-gene normalization) but estimates all gene expression changes jointly within a single model. The new methods are considerably more flexible and powerful than the standard delta-delta Ct analysis based on pairwise t-tests.
Our methodology expands the applicability of the relative-quantification analysis protocol all the way to the lowest-abundance targets, and provides a novel opportunity to analyze qRT-PCR data without making any assumptions concerning target stability. These procedures have been implemented as the MCMC.qpcr package in R.
Conventional approaches to Pd-catalyzed alkene 1,2-carboamination rely upon the combination of a nucleophilic nitrogen-based component and an internal C-based or external oxidant. In this study, we ...outline an umpolung approach, which is triggered by oxidative initiation at an electrophilic N-based component and employs “standard” organometallic nucleophiles to introduce the new carbon-based fragment. Specifically, oxidative addition of a Pd(0)-catalyst into the N–O bond of O-pentafluorobenzoyl oxime esters generates imino-Pd(II) intermediates, which undergo 5-exo cyclization with sterically diverse alkenes. The resultant alkyl-Pd(II) intermediates are intercepted by organometallic nucleophiles or alcohols, under carbonylative or noncarbonylative conditions, to provide 1,2-carboamination products. This approach provides, for the first time, a unified strategy for achieving alkene 1,2-amino-acylation, -carboxylation, -arylation, -vinylation, and -alkynylation. For carbonylative processes, orchestrated protodecarboxylation of the pentafluorobenzoate leaving group underpins reaction efficiency. This process is likely a key feature in related Narasaka–Heck cyclizations and accounts for the efficacy of O-pentafluorobenzoyl oxime esters in aza-Heck reactions of this type.
