A traditional approach for assessing similarity among N (N > 2) communities is to use multiple pairwise comparisons. However, pairwise similarity indices do not completely characterize ...multiple-community similarity because the information shared by at least three communities is ignored. We propose a new and intuitive two-stage probabilistic approach, which leads to a general framework to simultaneously compare multiple communities based on abundance data. The approach is specifically used to extend the commonly used Morisita index and NESS (normalized expected species shared) index to the case of N communities. For comparing N communities, a profile of N- 1 indices is proposed to characterize similarity of species composition across communities. Based on sample abundance data, nearly unbiased estimators of the proposed indices and their variances are obtained. These generalized NESS and Morisita indices are applied to comparison of three size classes of plant data (seedling, saplings, and trees) within old-growth and secondary rain forest plots in Costa Rica.
Materials that combine magnetic order with other desirable physical attributes could find transformative applications in spintronics, quantum sensing, low-density magnets and gas separations. Among ...potential multifunctional magnetic materials, metal-organic frameworks, in particular, bear structures that offer intrinsic porosity, vast chemical and structural programmability, and the tunability of electronic properties. Nevertheless, magnetic order within metal-organic frameworks has generally been limited to low temperatures, owing largely to challenges in creating a strong magnetic exchange. Here we employ the phenomenon of itinerant ferromagnetism to realize magnetic ordering at T
= 225 K in a mixed-valence chromium(II/III) triazolate compound, which represents the highest ferromagnetic ordering temperature yet observed in a metal-organic framework. The itinerant ferromagnetism proceeds through a double-exchange mechanism, which results in a barrierless charge transport below the Curie temperature and a large negative magnetoresistance of 23% at 5 K. These observations suggest applications for double-exchange-based coordination solids in the emergent fields of magnetoelectrics and spintronics.
Serotonergic (5HT) neurons exert diverse and widespread functions in the brain. Dysfunction of the serotonergic system gives rise to a variety of mental illnesses including depression, anxiety, ...obsessive compulsive disorder, autism and eating disorders. Here we show that human primary fibroblasts were directly converted to induced serotonergic (i5HT) neurons by the expression of Ascl1, Foxa2, Lmx1b and FEV. The transdifferentiation was enhanced by p53 knockdown and appropriate culture conditions including hypoxia. The i5HT neurons expressed markers for mature serotonergic neurons, had Ca(2+)-dependent 5HT release and selective 5HT uptake, exhibited spontaneous action potentials and spontaneous excitatory postsynaptic currents. Application of serotonin significantly increased the firing rate of spontaneous action potentials, demonstrating the functional utility of i5HT neurons for studying serotonergic neurotransmission. The availability of human i5HT neurons will be very useful for research and drug discovery on many serotonin-related mental disorders.
Multi-term time-fractional differential equations have been used for describing important physical phenomena. However, studies of the multi-term time-fractional partial differential equations with ...three kinds of nonhomogeneous boundary conditions are still limited.
In this paper, a method of separating variables is used to solve the multi-term time-fractional diffusion-wave equation and the multi-term time-fractional diffusion equation in a finite domain. In the two equations, the time-fractional derivative is defined in the Caputo sense. We discuss and derive the analytical solutions of the two equations with three kinds of nonhomogeneous boundary conditions, namely, Dirichlet, Neumann and Robin conditions, respectively.

WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY
Ovarian tissue cryopreservation followed by transplantation is a promising fertility preservation approach for cancer patients. However, transplantation of cryopreserved tissue to patients may carry the risk of re-implanting malignant cells. Grafting of follicles enzymatically isolated from ovarian tissue or developing a method for follicular culture and maturation in vitro may provide fertility to such patients without the risk of reintroducing the malignancy. However, the growth of pre-antral follicles isolated by enzymatic digestion from medulla tissue during long-term culture has received only little attention.
STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION
Two to ten human pre-antral follicles were encapsulated together within an alginate bead and cultured with or without ovarian interstitial tissue for either 7 days or >30 days. Follicles were cultured in either 20% oxygen or 5% oxygen or encapsulated in a lower concentration of alginate together with a lower concentration of FSH in high oxygen.
PARTICIPANTS/MATERIALS, SETTING, METHODS
A total of 395 pre-antral follicles from 16 cancer patients, aged 9–37 years, were co-cultured for either 7 days or >30 days. A proportion of follicle (64) were removed from culture on Day 7 and assessed for viability using confocal fluorescence microscopy following calcein-AM and ethidium homodimer-1 staining or histology. The remaining follicles (331) were continued in culture for >30 days then assessed for survival and growth. Anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) and estradiol levels were quantified in the medium.
MAIN RESULTS AND THE ROLE OF CHANCE
An optimized protocol for isolation of intact healthy pre-antral follicles from ovarian medulla was developed. After 7 days of culture, secondary follicles had a significantly higher survival rates compared with primary and primordial follicles (70 versus <38%). Primordial and primary follicles did not develop into the antral follicle stage. In contrast, secondary follicles continued to develop in all culture conditions examined. Based on growth rate and morphology, four distinct cohorts of surviving follicles, ‘fast growth’, ‘slow growth’, ‘no growth’ and ‘extruded oocyte’ were identified. From Day 1 to Day 30, the mean diameter of follicles increased from 184 ± 35 to 661 ± 120 μm (significant from Day 18), 145 ± 19 to 318 ± 68 μm and 136 ± 15 to 162 ± 25 μm (mean ± SD) in the ‘fast growth’, ‘slow growth’ and ‘no growth’ patterns, respectively. The fast growth follicles also contained a larger diameter oocyte than other follicle groups. From the pre-antral follicle to antral stage, follicles became steroidogenically active and secretion of AMH and estradiol increased. No significant difference between the follicles cultured with or without ovarian interstitial tissue was observed.
LIMITATIONS, REASONS FOR CAUTION
The number of surviving follicles at the end of study was low in each of the culture conditions therefore whether there is a benefit with any of the conditions is difficult to ascertain. Multiple pre-antral follicles were cultured within the same alginate bead which may affect the in vitro development of the secondary follicles.
WIDER IMPLICATIONS OF THE FINDINGS
These findings show that pre-antral follicles, isolated enzymatically from surplus medulla tissue that is normally discarded, possess a developmental potential which may be used to devise safer fertility preservation methods for patients who are at high risk of malignant contamination of their ovarian tissue.

The Guadalupian-Lopingian boundary stratotype at Penglaitan, and the nearby Tieqiao section, near Laibin, South China, record a series of major environmental changes within the Jiangnan Basin during ...a Mid-Permian biotic crisis. The sequence-stratigraphic, petrographic and palaeontological record of these sections has been studied and the associated strontium isotopic fluctuations have been assayed. Mass extinction of fusulinid foraminifers is most clearly associated in time with onset of volcanism and a relative sea-level fall that led to the establishment of mid-ramp conditions (Laibin Limestone) in settings that were previously dominated by radiolarian mudstones. The regression also coincides with a low point of 87Sr/86Sr ratios. The lowstand deposits contain mafic scoriaceous grains that record pyroclastic volcanism probably centred in the Emeishan flood basalt province 800 km to the west of Laibin. Thus, unusually violent eruptions associated with flood basalts in this province may have contributed to the environmental stresses responsible for the extinction event. Subsequent environmental changes included transgression, spread of dysoxic waters, indicated by populations of small pyrite framboids, and a major negative C-isotope excursion. All these phenomena have been previously related to the end-Guadalupian extinction but they in fact post-date the crisis because a post-extinction fauna of foraminifers is encountered at this time.
Clofazimine has shown activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis, including multidrug-resistant strains in vitro and in animal studies. However, clinical experience with clofazimine in ...multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) is scarce. We reported our clinical experience with 39 MDR-TB patients treated with combination regimens that included clofazimine. From January 2008 to March 2011, 39 patients received clofazimine for the treatment of MDR-TB in Shanghai Pulmonary Hospital. Patients had isolates resistant to a median of six drugs (range, 2–11 drugs). Of the 39 cases, 36 had cavitary changes noted on initial chest radiograph or chest computed tomography, and positive sputum-smear microscopy results at the time of MDR-TB diagnosis. At data censure, 15 of the 39 patients had successful therapy, with at least five consistently negative cultures documented for the final 12 months of treatment. Eleven continued to receive treatment. There were no deaths. Thirteen patients had a poor outcome, including four defaults and nine treatment failures. Culture conversion occurred in 22 cases at a median of 12 weeks. Side-effects occurred in 34 patients, mainly including skin discolouration, ichthyosis and gastrointestinal adverse events. No patients reported significant toxicity likely to be attributable to clofazimine therapy. Adverse events were managed by combinations of dose adjustment and symptom management. In our experience, clofazimine was well tolerated and may have efficacy in the treatment of MDR-TB.
During lactation, goat milk contains colostrum, transitional milk, mature milk, and end milk. The protein present in goat milk during different lactation periods has different characteristics. This ...study aimed to characterize the protein profile of goat milk samples obtained at different lactation stages and to identify changes in the physicochemical and functional properties of whey protein and casein from goat milk collected at 1, 3, 15, 100, and 200 d after calving. The results demonstrated that the lactation period had a great influence on the physicochemical and functional properties of goat milk whey protein and casein, especially the protein properties of colostrum on the first day after delivery. The denaturation temperature, hydrophobicity, and turbidity of whey protein were significantly higher on the first day postpartum than at other lactation periods. Correspondingly, the colostrum whey protein also had better functional properties, such as emulsification, oil holding capacity, and foaming properties on the first day postpartum than at other lactation periods. For casein, the turbidity, particle size, water holding capacity, and foaming properties on the first day after delivery were significantly higher than those at other lactation periods, whereas the denaturation temperature, oil holding capacity, and emulsification followed the opposite trend. For both whey protein and casein, the 2 indicators of emulsifying properties, namely, emulsifying activity index and the emulsion stability, also followed an opposite trend relative to lactation stage, whereas the changes in foaming capacity with the lactation period were completely consistent with the change of foaming stability. These findings could provide useful information for the use of goat milk whey protein and casein obtained during different lactation stages in the dairy industry.
Pathogens secrete effector molecules that facilitate the infection of their hosts. A number of effectors identified in plant pathogenic Phytophthora species possess N-terminal motifs (RXLR-dEER) ...required for targeting these effectors into host cells. Here, we bioinformatically identify >370 candidate effector genes in each of the genomes of P. sojae and P. ramorum. A single superfamily, termed avirulence homolog (Avh) genes, accounts for most of the effectors. The Avh proteins show extensive sequence divergence but are all related and likely evolved from a common ancestor by rapid duplication and divergence. More than half of the Avh proteins contain conserved C-terminal motifs (termed W, Y, and L) that are usually arranged as a module that can be repeated up to eight times. The Avh genes belong to the most rapidly evolving part of the genome, and they are nearly always located at synteny breakpoints. The superfamily includes all experimentally identified oomycete effector and avirulence genes, and its rapid pace of evolution is consistent with a role for Avh proteins in interaction with plant hosts.

Significant advances have recently been made in the development of functional polymers that are able to undergo light‐induced shape changes. The main challenge in the development of such polymer ...systems is the conversion of photoinduced effects at the molecular level to macroscopic movement of working pieces. This article highlights some selected polymer architectures and their tailored functionalization processes. Examples include the contraction and bending of azobenzene‐containing liquid‐crystal elastomers and volume changes in gels. We focus especially on light‐induced shape‐memory polymers. These materials can be deformed and temporarily fixed in a new shape. They only recover their original, permanent shape when irradiated with light of appropriate wavelengths. Using light as a trigger for the shape‐memory effect will extend the applications of shape‐memory polymers, especially in the field of medical devices where triggers other than heat are highly desirable.
Polymers move in response to light when photosensitive molecules are incorporated into suitable polymer architectures in combination with tailored functionalization processes. Selected examples for polymer systems that contract, bend, or change in volume are highlighted. Special attention is focused on light‐induced shape‐memory polymers that are able to recover their original shape from a temporarily fixed new shape (see figure).
