Scintillation crystals are commonly used for direct detection of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs), which are suitable candidates for a particle dark matter. It is well known that the ...scintillation light yields are different for electron recoil and nuclear recoil. To calibrate the energies of WIMP-induced nuclear recoil signals, the quenching factor (QF) needs to be measured, which is the light yield ratio of the nuclear recoil to electron recoil. Measurements of the QFs for Na and I recoils in a small (2 cm × 2 cm × 1.5 cm) NaI(Tl) crystal are performed with 2.43-MeV mono-energetic neutrons generated by deuteron-deuteron fusion. Depending on the scattering angle of the neutrons, the energies of the recoiled ions vary in the range of 9–152 keV for Na and 19–75 keV for I. The QFs of Na are measured at 9 points with values in the range of 10–23% while those of I are measured at 4 points with values in the range of 4–6%.
Organic light-emitting diode (OLED) displays have been an active and intense area of research for well over a decade and have now reached commercial success for displays from cell phones to large ...format televisions. A more thorough understanding of the many different potential degradation modes which cause OLED device failure will be necessary to develop the next generation of OLED materials, improve device lifetime, and to ultimately improve the cost vs performance ratio. Each of the different organic layers in an OLED device can be susceptible to unique decomposition pathways, however stability toward excitons is critical for emissive layer (EML) materials as well as any layer near the recombination zone. This study will specifically focus on degradation modes within the hole transport layer (HTL) with the goal being to identify the general decomposition paths occurring in an operating device and use this information to design new derivatives which can block these pathways. Through post-mortem analyses of several aged OLED devices, an apparently common intramolecular cyclization pathway has been identified that was not previously reported for arylamine-containing HTL materials and that operates parallel to but faster than the previously described fragmentation pathways.
In human in-vitro fertilization (IVF)-embryo transfer, the in-vitro culture environment differs from in-vivo conditions in that the oxygen concentration is higher, and in such conditions the mouse ...embryos show a higher concentration of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in simple culture media. ROS are believed to cause damage to cell membranes and DNA fragmentation in somatic cells. This study was conducted to ascertain the level of H2O2 concentration within embryos and the morphological features of cell damage induced by H2O2. A total of 62 human oocytes and embryos (31 fragmented, 15 non-fragmented embryos, 16 unfertilized oocytes) was obtained from the IVF-embryo transfer programme. The relative intensity of H2O2 concentrations within embryos was measured using 2',7'-dichlorodihydrofluorescein diacetate by Quanti cell 500 fluorescence imaging and DNA fragmentation was observed with transmission electron microscopy and an in-situ apoptosis detection kit. The H2O2 concentrations were significantly higher in fragmented embryos (72.21 +/- 9.62, mean +/- SEM) compared to non-fragmented embryos (31.30 +/- 3.50, P < 0.05) and unfertilized oocytes (30.75 +/- 2.67, P < 0.05). Apoptosis was observed only in fragmented embryos, and was absent in non-fragmented embryos. Electron microscopic findings confirmed apoptotic bodies and cytoplasmic condensation in the fragmented blastomeres. We conclude that there is a direct relationship between increased H2O2 concentration and apoptosis, and that further studies should be undertaken to confirm these findings.
Background: Montelukast (MTK), a representative leukotriene receptor antagonist, is currently being investigated as a potential candidate for treating Alzheimer's disease. For potent and effective ...dosing in elderly patients, a parenteral prolonged delivery system is favored, with improved medication adherence with reduced dosage frequency. Purpose: This study aimed to design a nanocrystalline suspension (NS)-based MTK prolonged delivery system and evaluate its pharmacokinetics profile and local tolerability following subcutaneous administration. Methods: To decelerate the dissolution rate, the amorphous MTK raw material was transformed into a crystalline state using a solvent-mediated transformation method and subsequently formulated into NS using a bead-milling technique. The MTK NSs were characterized by morphology, particle size, crystallinity, and in vitro dissolution profiles. The pharmacokinetic profile and local tolerability at the injection site following subcutaneous injection of MTK suspension were evaluated in rats. Results: Microscopic and physical characterization revealed that the amorphous MTK powder was lucratively transformed into a crystalline form in acidic media (pH 4). MTK crystalline suspensions with different diameters (200 mil, 500 nm, and 3 microm) were uniformly prepared using bead-milling technology, employing polysorbate 80 as suspending agent. Prepared crystalline suspensions exhibited analogous crystallinity (melting point, 150degreesC) and size-dependent in vitro dissolution profiles. MTK NSs with particle sizes of 200 nm and 500 nm provided a protracted pharmacokinetic profile for up to 4 weeks in rats, with a higher maximum drug concentration in plasma than the 3 microm-sized injectable suspensions. Histopathological examination revealed that MTK NS caused chronic granulomatous inflammation at the injection site, which resolved after 4 weeks. Conclusion: The MTK parenteral NS delivery system is expected to be a valuable tool for treating Alzheimer's disease with extended dose intervals. Neuronatin (
Nnat) is selectively expressed in the neonatal brain and is involved in neuronal differentiation during brain development. However, Nnat also appears to be abundantly expressed in ...adipose tissue, and is conspicuously elevated in the adipose tissue of obese Zucker diabetic fatty rats compared with control lean Zucker lean control rats shown in our previous report. Here, we examined the expression of Nnat in adipose tissue and demonstrated that the ectopic expression of Nnat mediated by retroviral infection or stable transfection of 3T3-L1 pre-adipocytes stimulated differentiation into mature adipocytes with early induction of adipogenic transcription factors. Moreover, in 3T3-L1 cells overexpressing Nnat, increased intracellular free calcium levels and enhanced phosphorylation of cAMP-response element-binding protein (CREB) were observed, which appears to potentiate CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein (C/EBP)β, C/EBPδ, and C/EBPα transcriptional activities. Collectively, the data indicate that Nnat enhances CREB phosphorylation through increasing intracellular free calcium levels, which potentiates expression of adipogenic transcription factors resulting in heightened adipocyte differentiation. These findings contribute to a greater fundamental understanding of obesity, a clinically important risk factor in numerous diseases.
Abstract During islet transplantation into the portal vein of the liver, the islet cells are expected to have complex interactions with hepatocytes. However, the mechanism underlying this interaction ...is not yet understood. Hence, we developed cellular complexes containing a mixture of human hepatocellular carcinoma cell line (Hep-G2) and rat insulin-secreting cell line (RIN-5F) by using a co-culture model and studied the function and morphology of the resultant hybrid cellular spheroids (HCSs). The RIN-5F and Hep-G2 cells were suspension cultured and, within 5 days of culture, the two types of cells aggregated to yield spheroids. The functionality of the thus formed HCSs was evaluated by measuring the levels of insulin and albumin in the culture supernatant. The HCSs retained their insulin- and albumin-secreting ability and their morphology, as revealed by immunohistological staining. The insulin and albumin levels secreted by the HCSs were considerably higher than those secreted by spheroids of single-cell origin. Generally, obtaining complexes from more than two types of cells is difficult. However, we were able to generate HCSs. We believe that this culture method could have various applications such as studying the in vitro cell-cell interactions and developing new cell transplantation models.
This study was done to investigate the quality properties of beef jerky with soy sauce, red pepper paste, and soybean paste replacing salt. Sliced beef samples were cured in salt (control), soy ...sauce, red pepper paste, and soybean paste for 24 or 48 h and then dried at 70°C for 8 h. Treatments showed higher final moisture content and lower Na(+) concentration than the control after drying for 8 h. The lightness and shear force values were lower in all treatment samples than in the control during 48 h of curing time. In particular, lower lipid oxidation was found in the jerky cured with red pepper paste than in the control. Sensory evaluation showed that color, flavor, and tenderness of jerky samples were improved by replacing salt with soy sauce, red pepper paste and soybean paste, and higher likeability scores of the beef jerky were obtained among those treatments after 48 h of curing time.

Cement paste, a cured mixture of cement and water, was reported to have considerable capacity for fluoride removal. In this study, heavily mixed fluoric acid wastewater from a semiconductor ...fabrication plant was applied to a column packed with cement paste granules to evaluate its capacity for the removal of fluoride and three other contaminants, phosphate, nitrate, and sulfate, as well as to investigate the interactions between these contaminants and cement components. The column reduced fluoride to remarkably low levels since fluorite was formed at highly elevated concentrations of calcium and the residual fluoride was further sorbed into the amorphous calcium phosphate that precipitated the entire amount of phosphate until breakthrough. The simultaneous removal of sulfate in the earlier stage was followed by significant removal of nitrate in exchange with the gradual release of sulfate. This behavior was explained by the co-precipitation of sulfate with calcium phosphate or calcium aluminate solids and the subsequent substitution of nitrate for the interlayer sulfate of monosulfate. However, the overall removal capacity of cement paste was reduced due to the high effluent loss of calcium and competition for calcium between fluoride and phosphate.
