Abstract The purpose of this study was to investigate a correlation between the cusp dimensions of the first molar and mesiodistal crown diameters of the central incisors in the maxilla. The study ...materials were composed of dental casts from 29 modern Japanese female subjects with a mean age of 20 years and 8 months. The mesiodistal crown diameters of the maxillary central incisors were measured. The mesiodistal and bucco-lingual crown diameters and the cusp diameters of the maxillary first molars, such as the paracone, metacone, protocone, and hypocone, were also measured. The crown areas and indices of the first molars were calculated. The Spearman's single rank correlation coefficients between the mean values for the crown dimensions of the first molars and the mesiodistal crown diameters of the central incisors were calculated. The hypocone cusp diameter and the hypocone index were the largest compared to those of the paracone, protocone, and metacone cusps. The bucco-lingual diameter and hypocone cusp diameter of the first molars positively correlated with the mesiodistal crown diameters of the central incisors on the same sides. There were positive correlations between the hypocone index of the first molars and the mesiodistal crown diameters of the central incisors. Based on the results, if a large hypocone is observed in eruption of the maxillary first molars, it will be predictable that of the mesiodistal crown diameter of the maxillary central incisor large.

Using 3-tier and 5-tier ...classification systems, we studied the relationship between time-series FHR pattern changes before delivery and umbilical artery blood gas data at delivery.
The subjects were 1,909 low-risk women with vaginal delivery (age: 29.1 ± 4.4 years, parity: 1.7 ± 0.8). FHR patterns were classified by a skilled obstetrician based on each 10 min-segment of the last 60 min before delivery from continuous CTG records in an obstetric clinic.
The relationship between each 10 min-segment FHR pattern classification from 60 minutes before delivery and umbilical artery blood pH and base excess (BE) values at delivery changed with time. In the 3-tier classification, mean pH of Category I group in each 10 min-segment was significantly higher than that of Category II group. For Category I groups in each 10-minute segment, its number decreased and its average pH increased as the delivery time approached. In the 5-tier classification, there was the same tendency. About each level group in 10 min-segment, the higher the level, the lower the blood gas values, and mean pH of higher level groups decreased as the delivery time approached.
The relationship between classifications and outcomes was clear at any time from 60 min before delivery in 3- and 5-tier classifications, and the 5-tier classification was more relevant.
Abstract Objectives Contrast-enhanced harmonic endoscopic ultrasonography (CEH-EUS) has been used to diagnose solid pancreatic lesions (SPLs). The aim of this study was to investigate the efficacy of ...CEH-EUS-guided fine-needle aspiration (CEH-EUS-FNA) compared with that of conventional EUS-FNA for the diagnosis of SPLs. Methods Forty patients with solid pancreatic lesions who visited Fukushima Medical University between September 2013 and June 2014 were recruited for this prospective study. Twenty patients underwent CEH-EUS-FNA, and 20 patients underwent conventional EUS-FNA. The sampling rate, sensitivity, accuracy, and number of needle passes required to obtain sufficient samples were compared between the two groups. Results Patient characteristics, sampling rate, accuracy, and sensitivity were not significantly different between the two groups. The final diagnosis of patients who underwent CEH-EUS-FNA was pancreatic cancer in 19 and intraductal papillary mucinous carcinoma in one. Nineteen patients who underwent conventional EUS-FNA were finally diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and one was diagnosed as cancer of the common bile duct. There was a significant difference in the number of needle passes required. A sufficient sample was obtained on one needle pass in 60% (12/20) of CEH-EUS-FNA group compared with 25% (5/20) of the conventional EUS-FNA group. Conclusions Fewer needle passes were required to obtain samples from solid pancreatic lesions using CEH-EUS-FNA than those required using conventional EUS-FNA. Therefore, CEH-EUS-FNA may be more efficient and safer than conventional EUS-FNA for the diagnosis of solid pancreatic lesions.
Photon upconversion (UC) based on triplet–triplet annihilation (TTA) is an emerging wavelength shifting technology, which is applicable to sunlight. Previously we found that the quantum efficiency of ...TTA-UC (ΦUC) carried out in ionic liquids (ILs) is dependent on the type of IL employed. In this article we investigate the kinetics of the triplet emitter molecules (perylene) that implement TTA to determine the origin of the IL dependence of ΦUC. We measure the time-resolved delayed UC fluorescence intensities from samples made with five imidazolium-based ILs, and their intensity decay curves are analyzed with an analytical model. Consequently, several important aspects regarding both the first-order and second-order decays are elucidated. It is revealed that the IL dependence of ΦUC primarily originates from the IL dependence of the branching ratio toward TTA upon an encounter of two triplet emitter molecules. Additionally, a strong correlation between the viscosity of the ILs and the branching ratios toward TTA is found. This finding is supported by temperature-dependent measurements, from which ΦUC is found to be significantly affected by the viscosity of the IL. The results of this study should provide a clue for further improving ΦUC.
The efficiency of triplet-sensitized photon upconversion in ionic liquids was previously found to be dependent on the type of ionic liquid employed. The properties of the intermolecular energy ...transfer need to be understood in order to improve the upconversion efficiency. Here, we investigate the kinetics of the triplet energy transfer from the triplet sensitizing molecule to the emitter molecule where the latter is responsible for delayed upconversion fluorescence emission. The collision kinetics between the sensitizer and emitter molecules in imidazolium ionic liquids are investigated by systematically changing the alkyl chain length of the ionic liquid cation. Stern–Volmer analysis reveals unique diffusion behavior of the solute molecules in ionic liquids, and this observation is attributed to the microheterogeneity of the ionic liquids. Through time-resolved transient absorption measurements and determination of the triplet–triplet absorption coefficient of the sensitizer molecule used, we find that the quantum efficiency of the triplet energy transfer in the present system is sufficiently high (ca. 0.75) and independent of the type of ionic liquid. These findings show that the ionic liquid dependence of the upconversion efficiency arises from the later processes pertaining to the emitter molecule rather than the triplet energy transfer process.

Associations between symptoms and other factors were examined by means of a contingency table analysis and logistic regression.
The proportions of responses for health status were compared for each question item; significant differences were found in age group (
< 0.01), subjective symptoms (
< 0.01), hospital visits (
< 0.01), and lifestyle (
< 0.01). The proportion of responses indicating "poor" perceived health status was high among those with subjective symptoms (4.8%) and hospital visits (4.7%). From the logistic regression, significant odds ratios were found for subjective symptoms (2.10, 95% confidence interval (C.I.) 1.15-3.83) and age group (1.98, 95% C.I. 1.05-3.72).
Among measures to improve quality of life from childhood, comprehensive health guidance that emphasizes understanding symptoms and includes age and living conditions is important.
Autoimmune pancreatitis (AIP) is treatable with steroids, but relapse is frequent. The efficacy of steroid pulse therapy has been shown for various autoimmune diseases, but has not become established ...therapy. In this study, we reviewed the efficacy of steroid pulse therapy in 24 subjects who were diagnosed with AIP type 1 at our hospital. Patient characteristics, time-course of serum IgG4, and the cumulative relapse-free survival rate were compared between patients who received oral steroid therapy (oral group) and those who were treated with steroid pulse therapy (pulse group). Serum IgG4 was reduced significantly after therapy in both groups and the 5-year cumulative relapse-free survival rates in the two groups did not differ significantly (oral group 46.9%, pulse group 77.8%). However, in a subset of cases with diffuse pancreatic swelling, this rate was significantly lower in the oral group (33.3% vs. 100.0%, p = 0.046). These results suggest that steroid pulse therapy is effective for prevention of relapse in AIP patients with diffuse pancreatic swelling.
AIM To investigate the factors predictive of failure when placing a second biliary self-expandable metallic stents(SEMSs). METHODS This study evaluated 65 patients with an unresectable malignant ...hilar biliary obstruction who were examined in our hospital. Sixty-two of these patients were recruited to the study and divided into two groups: the success group, which consisted of patients in whom a stent-in-stent SEMS had been placed successfully, and the failure group, which consisted of patients in whom the stent-in-stent SEMS had not been placed successfully. We compared the characteristics of the patients, the stricture state of their biliary ducts, and the implemented endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography(ERCP) procedures between the two groups.RESULTS The angle between the target biliary duct stricture and the first implanted SEMS was significantly larger in the failure group than in the success group. There were significantly fewer wire or dilation devices(ERCP catheter, dilator, or balloon catheter) passing the first SEMS cell in the failure group than in the success group. The cut-off value of the angle predicting stent-in-stent SEMS placement failure was 49.7 degrees according to the ROC curve(sensitivity 91.7%, specificity 61.2%). Furthermore, the angle was significantly smaller in patients with wire or dilation devices passing the first SEMS cell than in patients without wire or dilation devices passing the first SEMS cell. CONCLUSION A large angle was identified as a predictive factor for failure of stent-in-stent SEMS placement.
The aim of this study was to review the efficacy of contrast-enhanced harmonic endoscopic ultrasonography (CH-EUS) in diagnosing gallbladder (GB)-protruded lesions. Thirty-eight patients underwent ...CH-EUS for the diagnosis of GB-protruded lesions. Twenty-four patients whose major axes of their largest lesions were longer than 10 mm were recruited. The ability of CH-EUS to diagnose malignant or benign lesions was reviewed. We treated lesions with brindled enhanced patterns as malignant and those with uniformly enhanced or unenhanced patterns as benign. Furthermore, three gastroenterologists who were not familiar with pancreaticobiliary EUS compared the diagnostic abilities of CH-EUS and conventional EUS using photographs. The sensitivity, specificity, and malignant accuracy of CH-EUS were 100, 94.4, and 95.8%, respectively. The number of lesions that presented with enhanced patterns was significantly different between the malignant lesions and the benign lesions (P < 0.001). In the comparison of diagnostic abilities between CH-EUS and conventional EUS by the three gastroenterologists, CH-EUS was significantly superior to conventional EUS in terms of sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy (76.1 vs. 42.9%, P = 0.029; 66.7 vs. 39.2%, P = 0.005; and 69.4 vs. 40.3%, P < 0.001; respectively). In conclusion, CH-EUS was useful for diagnosing malignant and benign GB-protruded lesions.
Background: Oral disabilities occur due to tooth loss. This study aimed to investigate oral and systemic factors related to diet in elderly residents receiving domiciliary dental care. Methods: The ...subjects were 74 consenting residents. Survey items included whether subjects could eat independently and diet type. Subjects were examined by the dentist for the number of teeth, occlusal support index, and wearing dentures. Contingency table analysis was performed to determine what levels of decline in general and oral functions led to difficulties eating a normal diet. Results: There was a significant difference in the mean number of activities of daily living (ADL) requiring assistance evident between subjects eating a normal diet and those eating fluid boiled rice (p < 0.01). A comparison of occlusal support and diet type showed that most subjects who ate a soft diet or gruel had no occlusal support. Almost all subjects who ate a normal diet wore dentures. However, only 38% of subjects eating a soft diet and 40% of those eating gruel did wear dentures; both group differences were significant (p < 0.01). Conclusions: Future studies need to further investigate oral factors related to the type of diet and their relationships to domiciliary dental care in older adults.
