Les noms propres sont omniprésents et intéressent, depuis des siècles, philosophes et linguistes. Le travail réalisé ici est une étude contrastive des noms propres en traduction, divisée en quatre ...parties. Les deux premières parties sont théoriques. La première partie traite de la notion de nom propre en linguistique anglaise et en linguistique française. La deuxième partie présente les différents procédés de traduction, illustrés par des exemples sur les noms propres. Les deux parties suivantes sont expérimentales. La troisième partie détaille les différentes étapes de la constitution de notre corpus multilingue parallèle aligné et annoté, composé de onze versions du roman de Jules Verne, Le Tour du Monde en quatre-vingts jours, en dix langues européennes. La quatrième partie expose les résultats obtenus suite à l’observation du comportement des noms propres en traduction.Cette étude contredit souvent l’hypothèse largement répandue de leur intraduisibilité.
Proper names are omnipresent and have long held the interest of both philosophers and linguists.Our work, divided into four parts, presents, from a contrastive perspective, the behaviour of proper names in translation.The first two parts are theoretical. Firstly, we give a general presentation of what is a proper name from the point of view of both English and French linguistics. Secondly, we introduce the different translation processes proper nouns can undergo.The last two parts are experimental. We begin by explaining the different phases in the process of constitution of our aligned and annotated multilingual parallel corpus, composed of eleven versions of Jules Verne’s novel, Le Tour du monde en quatre-vingts jours, in ten European languages. We then present the results obtained from the observation of proper names behaviour in translation.These results often contradict the widespread idea regarding proper names untranslatability.
L’hypothèse selon laquelle les noms propres ne se traduisent pas est très répandue. Elle peut s’expliquer par des critères définitoires des noms propres très réducteurs mais malheureusement largement ...partagés. Dans cet article, nous démontrons, à partir de l’étude d’un corpus aligné composé de onze versions en dix langues du même texte littéraire, que le nom propre peut être sujet à différents procédés de traduction et qu’il est erroné de prôner le report simple systématique des noms propres de la langue-source à la langue-cible.
The hypothesis according to which proper names cannot be translated is widely spread and can be explained by an unfortunately long tradition of reductive yet very famous definitional criteria for proper names. In this paper, we show that proper names can be translated using different strategies. To do so, we introduce a parallel multilingual corpus made of eleven versions in ten different languages of a novel. We try to demonstrate that it is wrong to promote the systematic use of borrowing when translating proper names from the source-language into the target-language
Dans cet article, nous abordons le problème de la traduction des noms propres. Nous présentons notre hypothèse, selon laquelle la thèse très répandue de la non-traductibilité des noms propres peut ...être contredite. Puis, nous décrivons la construction du corpus multilingue aligné que nous utilisons pour illustrer notre propos. Nous évaluons enfin les apports et les limites de ce corpus dans le cadre de notre étude.

Elevated levels of type I interferon (IFN) during pregnancy are associated with intrauterine growth retardation, preterm birth, and fetal demise through mechanisms that are not well understood. A ...critical step of placental development is the fusion of trophoblast cells into a multinucleated syncytiotrophoblast (ST) layer. Fusion is mediated by syncytins, proteins deriving from ancestral endogenous retroviral envelopes. Using cultures of human trophoblasts or mouse cells, we show that IFN-induced transmembrane proteins (IFITMs), a family of restriction factors blocking the entry step of many viruses, impair ST formation and inhibit syncytin-mediated fusion. Moreover, the IFN inducer polyinosinic:polycytidylic acid promotes fetal resorption and placental abnormalities in wild-type but not in
deleted mice. Thus, excessive levels of IFITMs may mediate the pregnancy complications observed during congenital infections and other IFN-induced pathologies.
