We report the record on-chip quality(Q)-factor for diverse chalcogenide glasses, reaching the loss of optical fibers on near- and mid-infrared. The maximum Q-factor is 2.15×10 7 and 2.91×10 7 in 1.55 ...μm and 3.67 μm wavelength, respectively.
Sweet`s panniculitis is a rare variant of Sweet`s syndrome in which neutrophilic infiltrate can be found either in the subcutaneous fat or in both the dermis and the subcutaneous tissue. Due to the ...rarity of this entity, the association between Sweet`s panniculitis and malignancies is inconclusive, but cases of Sweet`s panniculitis have largely been associated with hematological malignancies. Herein, we present a case of Sweet`s panniculitis accompanied by bone metastasis from prostate cancer. ARD1 protein is a mammalian gene product homologous to a yeast Ard1p (Arrest defective 1 protein) acetyltransferase. Although two alternative splicing products of ARD1, ARD1(235) and ARD1(225), were ...reported in mouse, only ARD1(235) orthologue was reported in humans. Here we show that ARD1(225) is not expressed in humans, suggesting that factors regulating alternative splicing of ARD1 may have evolved differently between species. In human cells, hARD1(235) is shown to be present in both nucleus and cytoplasm. However, in mouse cells, mARD1(235) and mARD1(225) proteins are localized to the nucleus and cytoplasm, respectively. Moreover, during apoptosis, ARD1(235) and ARD1(225) isoforms are destabilized by different mechanisms in a species-specific manner and dependent on destabilizing reagents. These results indicate that ARD1(235) and ARD1(225) isoforms may have different activities and function in different subcellular compartments of mammalian cells.
Cyclin-dependent kinase (CDK) inhibitor p21(WAF1/CIP1(-/-))-null mice have an increased incidence of tumor formation. Here, we demonstrate that p21(WAF1/CIP1) is unstable in HeLa cells treated with ...siRNA duplexes that target PKCdelta. PKCdelta phosphorylates p21(WAF1/CIP1 )at a serine residue ((146)Ser) located in its C-terminal domain. In cells treated with 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol 13-acetate, the levels of both p21(WAF1/CIP1) and its (146)Ser-phosphorylated form increased significantly. We also show that a substitution, resulting from a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) at (149)Asp found in certain cancer patients, strongly compromises PKCdelta-mediated phosphorylation at (146)Ser and results in cells that are relatively resistant to TNFalpha-induced apoptosis. Thus, post-translational phosphorylation of p21(WAF1/CIP1) is important from an apoptotic cell death, and may also have patho-physiological relevance for the development of human cancer.

Background: Topical application of corticosteroids also has an influence on skin barrier impairment. Physiological lipid mixtures, such as multi- lamellar emulsion (MLE) containing a natural lipid ...component leads to effective recovery of the barrier function. Objective: The purpose of this study was to conduct an evaluation of the therapeutic efficacy and skin barrier protection of topical mometasone furoate in MLE. Methods: A multi-center randomized, double-blind, controlled study was performed to assess the efficacy and safety of mometasone furoate cream in MLE for Korean patients with eczema. The study group included 175 patients with eczema, who applied either mometasone furoate in MLE cream or methylprednisolone aceponate cream for 2 weeks. Treatment efficacy was evaluated using the physician`s global assessment of clinical response (PGA), trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL), and visual analogue scale (VAS) for pruritus. Patients were evaluated using these indices at days 4, 8, and 15. Results: Comparison of PGA score, TEWL, and VAS score at baseline with those at days 4, 8, and 15 of treatment showed a significant improvement in both groups. Patients who applied mometasone furoate in MLE (74.8%) showed better results (p<0.05) than those who applied methylprednisolone aceponate (47.8%). The TEWL improvement ratio was higher in the mometasone furoate in MLE group than that in the methylprednisolone aceponate group, and VAS improvement was also better in the mometasone furoate in MLE group. Conclusion: Mometasone furoate in MLE has a better therapeutic efficacy as well as less skin barrier impairment than methylprednisolone aceponate. (Ann Dermatol 25(1) 17∼22, 2013)

Cutaneous metastases from internal malignancies are, occurring in 0.5% to 9% of cases. Lung, breast, and colorectal cancers are common primary tumors that metastasize to the skin; cutaneous ...metastasis usually occurs on the chest wall and abdomen as asymptomatic nodular patterns. Esophageal cancer is not nearly as common as breast, lung, and colorectal cancers, and esophageal cancer rarely metastasizes to the skin. Cutaneous metastasis of esophageal cancer is rare and metastasis to the scalp is extremely rare. Only a few cases of cutaneous metastases of esophageal cancer have been reported in Korea. Most of the cases involved cutaneous metastases arising from esophageal squamous cell carcinoma; however, there have been several reports describing cutaneous metastases from esophageal adenocarcinomas. Herein, we describe a case of metastatic skin cancer that originated from esophageal adenocarcinoma.

We report a case of acute suppurative thyroiditis complicated by idiopathic hypoparathyroidism. ...The patient was a 49-year-old female who visited our clinic with a painful goiter on the left lobe of the thyroid gland. She was hypocalcemic, which was accompanied unusually by acute suppurative thyroiditis. She also suffered from tetany of both hands and legs. She had undergone a right subtotal thyroidectomy at another hospital 23 years previously due to a benign thyroid nodule. Intact parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels were increased, but other laboratory findings were normal. No special treatment was administered for the acute suppurative thyroiditis, except antibiotics, to observe its natural course. Her PTH levels decreased and serum calcium returned to normal. The complication of acute suppurative thyroiditis suggested the possible involvement of idiopathic hypoparathyroidism. (Korean J Med 2014;86:79-83) KCI Citation Count: 0
In millimeter wave (mmWave) systems, analog beam steering (i.e., direction of arrival (DOA) estimation) is an essential operation for subsequent channel estimations. In this paper, we propose a ...framework of incorporating a monopulse ratio (MR) concept, originally developed for radar systems, into an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) mmWave systems with cyclic prefix (CP) for DOA estimation. It is shown that CP can be used for DOA estimation in general OFDM mmWave systems by employing the MR concept. Based on performance analysis and simulation results, the proposed method can be considered as a practical and robust DOA estimation method for single RF chain analog beamforming systems.
