In the crystal of the title mol-ecular salt (systematic name: 2-acetyl-pyridinium 2,5-dibromo-4-hydr-oxy-3,6-dioxocyclo-hexa-1,4-dienolate), C(7)H(8)NO(+)·C(6)HBr(2)O(4) (-), centrosymmetric rings ...consisting of two cations and two anions are formed, with the components linked by alternating O-H⋯O and N-H⋯O hydrogen bonds. Short O⋯Br contacts 3.243 (2) and 3.359 (2) Å may help to consolidate the packing.
Plasma β endorphin and met-enkephalin concentrations were measured in response to treadmill exercises in 15 normal women before, during, and after an intensive programme of exercise training. ...Significant release of β endorphin occurred in all three test runs, and the pattern and amount of release were not altered by training. Before training dramatic release of met-enkephalin was observed in seven subjects and smaller rises observed in a further four, and this response was almost abolished by training. This represents the first observed "physiological" stimulus to met-enkephalin release. Endogenous opioid peptides play a part in adaptive changes to exercise training and probably contribute to the menstrual disturbances of women athletes.

In keeping with current expectations in the health care community, the purpose of the American Board of Optometric Practice (ABOP) is to enhance the quality of optometric care available to the public ...by fostering continued competence for practitioners through administering education and examinations for certification and re-certification. The formation of ABOP makes possible for the first time a board certification process for optometrists.
The optometry model for board certification and recertification emphasizes the breadth of the profession. ABOP certification will be accomplished through a combination of examinations and high-quality, tested Board Certified Continuing Education (BCCE). Specific requirements for practitioners at various stages of their careers are presented.
Board certification provides one important mechanism for an optometrist to demonstrate commitment to quality, professionalism, and ongoing clinical competence. The optometrist benefits from high-quality continuing education designed for timeliness, importance, and breadth. The public benefits by the enhancement of continued competence within the optometric profession. Health care agencies benefit by being able to recognize providers who have elected to demonstrate their qualifications through certification.
Through board certification, optometrists will be able to demonstrate their commitment to maintaining clinical competence through a nationally uniform program, and they will be able to comply with standards that are generally recognized and required throughout the health care community.
Levels of endogenous somatostatin, gastric inhibitory polypeptide (GIP), glucagon and insulin were measured during gastric (abomasal) emptying in the conscious calf. Isotonic NaHCO3 infused into the ...duodenum increased rates of emptying of a saline test meal and of gastric acid secretion, but had no effect on basal levels of blood glucose, somatostatin, GIP, insulin or glucagon. By contrast, intraduodenal infusion of 60 mM-HCl caused complete inhibition of gastric emptying, reduction of acid secretion, and an immediate increase in plasma somatostatin from 121.3 +/- 9.4 (S.E.M.) to 286.3 +/- 16.3 pg/ml (P less 0.01) but levels of GIP, insulin, glucagon and glucose were unaltered. Intravenous injection of somatostatin (0.5 microgram/kg) suppressed the antral electromyographic recording and gastri efflux so long as plasma somatostatin levels remained above approx. 200pg/ml. This suggest that somatostatin can be released by intraduodenal acidification and that it inhibits gastric function by an endocrine effect. Since somatostatin retards gastric emptying it may therefore have an indirect role in nutrient homeostasis by limiting discharge of gastric chyme to the duodenum.
A patient with Addison's disease, treated with conventional corticosteroid therapy, developed endocrine and radiological features suggestive of an ACTH secreting pituitary tumour. The negative ...feedback control of ACTH secretion by the inhibitory effect of hydrocortisone was shown to be preserved although attenuated. Retiming and alteration of corticosteroid therapy reinforced this feedback control, without the need for supraphysiological amounts of steroid, and resulted in the regression of the endocrine disorder.
