Biodegradable plastics, as alternatives to conventional plastics, are increasingly used, but their interactions with organic pollutants are still unknown. In this study, the sorption and desorption ...behaviors on a type of biodegradable plastic−poly(butylene adipate co-terephtalate) (PBAT) were investigated, and at the same time two types of conventional plastics−polyethylene (PEc and PEv) and polystyrene (PS) were used for comparison. Phenanthrene (PHEN) was chosen as one of representative organic pollutants. Results indicated that the sorption and desorption capacities of PBAT were not only higher than those of the other types of microplastics, but also higher than those of carbonaceous geosorbents. The surface area normalized results illustrated that sorption and desorption of the microplastics were positively correlated with their abundance of rubbery subfraction. The sorption kinetic results showed that the sorption rates of PBAT and PEc were higher than PEv and PS. The effects of water chemistry factors including salinity, dissolved organic matter and Cu2+ ion on the sorption process displayed the same trend, but the degrees of influence on the four microplastics differed. The degrees of influence were mainly dependent on the abundance of rubbery subfraction for microplastics. These findings indicate that the biodegradable poly(butylene adipate co-terephtalate) microplastics are actually stronger vectors than the conventional microplastics, and crystallization characteristics of the microplastics have great influences on the vector effect.

Microplastics, as emerging contaminants in the global environment, have become a cause for concern for both academics and the public. The present understanding of microplastic pollution is primarily ...focused on marine environments, and less attention has been given to freshwater environments, in particular, to urban rivers. In this study, microplastics were sampled from surface water and sediments in 14 sites located in the lower course of the Pearl River. These sampling sites are located along Guangzhou of South China, with built-up areas being the dominant land use. The abundances of microplastics in surface water and sediments ranged from 379 to 7924 items·m−3 and 80 to 9597 items·kg−1, respectively. Polyethylene and polypropylene were the common types of microplastics, together accounting for 64.3% and 73.8% of surface water and sediment samples, respectively. Fibers were the dominant microplastic shapes in both water and sediment samples. The abundances of microplastics varied in surface water and sediments with each site, which might be affected by multiple factors. Our results indicated that wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) could reduce microplastics from municipal sewage which was finally discharged into the Pearl River along Guangzhou.

Under the approximate chiral symmetry restoration, quark interactions with topological gluon fields in quantum chromodynamics can induce a chirality imbalance and parity violation in local domains. ...An electric charge separation (CS) could be generated along the direction of a strong magnetic field (B), a phenomenon called the chiral magnetic effect (CME). CS measurements by azimuthal correlators are contaminated by major backgrounds from elliptic flow anisotropy (v_{2}). Isobaric _{44}^{96}Ru+_{44}^{96}Ru and _{40}^{96}Zr+_{40}^{96}Zr collisions have been proposed to identify the CME (expected to differ between the two systems) out of the backgrounds (to be almost the same). We show, by using the density functional theory calculations of the proton and neutron distributions, that these expectations may not hold as originally anticipated because the two systems may have sizable differences in eccentricity and v_{2}.
Diabetes is generally accompanied by difficult-to-heal wounds, which often lead to permanent disability and even death of patients. Because of the abundance of a variety of growth factors, platelet ...rich plasma (PRP) has been proven to have great clinical potential for diabetic wound treatment. However, how to suppress the explosive release of its active components while realizing adaptability to different wounds remains important for PRP therapy. Here, an injectable, self-healing, and non-specific tissue-adhesive hydrogel formed by oxidized chondroitin sulfate and carboxymethyl chitosan was designed as an encapsulation and delivery platform for PRP. With a dynamic cross-linking structural design, the hydrogel can meet the clinical demands of irregular wounds with controllable gelation and viscoelasticity. Inhibition of PRP enzymolysis as well as sustained release of its growth factors is realized with the hydrogel, enhancing cell proliferation and migration in vitro. Notably, greatly accelerated healing of full thickness wounds of diabetic skins is enabled by promoting the formation of granulation tissues, collagen deposition and angiogenesis as well as reducing inflammation in vivo. This self-healing and extracellular matrix-mimicking hydrogel provides powerful assistance to PRP therapy, enabling its promising applications for the repair and regeneration of diabetic wounds.

Nanotechnology is one of the scientific advances in technology. Nanoparticles (NPs) are small materials ranging from 1 to 100 nm. When the shape of the supplied nanoparticles changes, the ...physiological response of the cells can be very different. Several characteristics of NPs such as the composition, surface chemistry, surface charge, and shape are also important parameters affecting the toxicity of nanomaterials. This review covered specific topics that address the effects of NPs on nanomedicine. Furthermore, mechanisms of different types of nanomaterial-induced cytotoxicities were described. The distributions of different NPs in organs and their adverse effects were also emphasized. This review provides insight into the scientific community interested in nano(bio)technology, nanomedicine, and nanotoxicology. The content may also be of interest to a broad range of scientists.
Childhood obesity is a serious public health concern. School-based interventions hold great promise to combat the rising trend of childhood obesity. This systematic review aimed to assess the overall ...effects of school-based obesity prevention interventions, and to investigate characteristics of intervention components that are potentially effective for preventing childhood obesity.
We systematically searched MEDLINE, CENTRAL and Embase databases to identify randomized- or cluster randomized- controlled trials of school-based obesity interventions published between 1990 and 2019. We conducted meta-analyses and subgroup analyses to determine the overall effects of obesity prevention programs and effect differences by various characteristics of intervention components on body mass index (BMI) or BMI Z-score of children.
This systematic review included a total of 50 trials (reported by 56 publications). Significant differences were found between groups on BMI (- 0.14 kg/m
(95% confidence interval: - 0.21, - 0.06)) and BMI Z-score (- 0.05 (- 0.10, - 0.01)) for single-component interventions; significant differences were also found between groups on BMI (- 0.32 (- 0.54, - 0.09) kg/m
) and BMI Z-score (- 0.07 (- 0.14, - 0.001)) for multi-component interventions. Subgroup analyses consistently demonstrated that effects of single-component (physical activity) interventions including curricular sessions (- 0.30 (- 0.51, - 0.10) kg/m
in BMI) were stronger than those without curricular sessions (- 0.04 (- 0.17, 0.09) kg/m
in BMI); effects of single-component (physical activity) interventions were also strengthened if physical activity sessions emphasized participants' enjoyment (- 0.19 (- 0.33, - 0.05) kg/m
in BMI for those emphasizing participants' enjoyment; - 0.004 (- 0.10, 0.09) kg/m
in BMI for those not emphasizing participants' enjoyment). The current body of evidence did not find specific characteristics of intervention components that were consistently associated with improved efficacy for multi-component interventions (P > 0.05).
School-based interventions are generally effective in reducing excessive weight gain of children. Our findings contribute to increased understandings of potentially effective intervention characteristics for single-component (physical activity) interventions. The impact of combined components on effectiveness of multi-component interventions should be the topic of further research. More high-quality studies are also needed to confirm findings of this review.

Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is the fifth common cause of cancer mortality in Taiwan with high incidence and recurrence and needs new therapeutic strategies. In this study, ursolic acid (UA), ...a triterpenoid, was examined the antitumor potency in OSCC cells. Our results showed that UA inhibited the proliferation of OSCC cells in a dose- and time-dependent manner in both Ca922 and SCC2095 oral cancer cells. UA induced caspase-dependent apoptosis accompanied with the modulation of various biological biomarkers including downregulating Akt/mTOR/NF-κB signaling, ERK, and p38. In addition, UA inhibited angiogenesis as evidenced by abrogation of migration/invasion and blocking MMP-2 secretion in Ca922 cells. Interestingly, UA induced autophagy in OSCC cells, as manifested by LC3B-II conversion and increased p62 expression and accumulation of autophagosomes. Inhibition by autophagy inhibitor enhanced UA-mediated apoptosis in Ca922 cells. The experiment provides a rationale for using triterpenoid in the treatment of OSCC.
