Nitrogen is the main limiting nutrient after carbon, hydrogen and oxygen for photosynthetic process, phyto-hormonal, proteomic changes and growth-development of plants to complete its lifecycle. ...Excessive and inefficient use of N fertilizer results in enhanced crop production costs and atmospheric pollution. Atmospheric nitrogen (71%) in the molecular form is not available for the plants. For world's sustainable food production and atmospheric benefits, there is an urgent need to up-grade nitrogen use efficiency in agricultural farming system. The nitrogen use efficiency is the product of nitrogen uptake efficiency and nitrogen utilization efficiency, it varies from 30.2 to 53.2%. Nitrogen losses are too high, due to excess amount, low plant population, poor application methods etc., which can go up to 70% of total available nitrogen. These losses can be minimized up to 15-30% by adopting improved agronomic approaches such as optimal dosage of nitrogen, application of N by using canopy sensors, maintaining plant population, drip fertigation and legume based intercropping. A few transgenic studies have shown improvement in nitrogen uptake and even increase in biomass. Nitrate reductase, nitrite reductase, glutamine synthetase, glutamine oxoglutarate aminotransferase and asparagine synthetase enzyme have a great role in nitrogen metabolism. However, further studies on carbon-nitrogen metabolism and molecular changes at omic levels are required by using "whole genome sequencing technology" to improve nitrogen use efficiency. This review focus on nitrogen use efficiency that is the major concern of modern days to save economic resources without sacrificing farm yield as well as safety of global environment, i.e. greenhouse gas emissions, ammonium volatilization and nitrate leaching.
The surge of patients in the pandemic of COVID‐19 caused by the novel coronavirus SARS‐CoV‐2 may overwhelm the medical systems of many countries. Mask‐wearing and handwashing can slow the spread of ...the virus, but currently, masks are in shortage in many countries, and timely handwashing is often impossible. In this study, the efficacy of three types of masks and instant hand wiping was evaluated using the avian influenza virus to mock the coronavirus. Virus quantification was performed using real‐time reverse transcription‐polymerase chain reaction. Previous studies on mask‐wearing were reviewed. The results showed that instant hand wiping using a wet towel soaked in water containing 1.00% soap powder, 0.05% active chlorine, or 0.25% active chlorine from sodium hypochlorite removed 98.36%, 96.62%, and 99.98% of the virus from hands, respectively. N95 masks, medical masks, and homemade masks made of four‐layer kitchen paper and one‐layer cloth could block 99.98%, 97.14%, and 95.15% of the virus in aerosols. Medical mask‐wearing which was supported by many studies was opposed by other studies possibly due to erroneous judgment. With these data, we propose the approach of mask‐wearing plus instant hand hygiene (MIH) to slow the exponential spread of the virus. This MIH approach has been supported by the experiences of seven countries in fighting against COVID‐19. Collectively, a simple approach to slow the exponential spread of SARS‐CoV‐2 was proposed with the support of experiments, literature review, and control experiences.

nutrition in the sugarcane plant.
In this study, a total of 350 different bacterial strains were isolated from rhizospheric soil samples of the sugarcane plants. Out of these, 22 isolates were selected based on plant growth promotion traits, biocontrol, and nitrogenase activity. The presence and activity of the nifH gene and the ability of nitrogen-fixation proved that all 22 selected strains have the ability to fix nitrogen. These strains were used to perform 16S rRNA and rpoB genes for their identification. The resulted amplicons were sequenced and phylogenetic analysis was constructed. Among the screened strains for nitrogen fixation, CY5 (Bacillus megaterium) and CA1 (Bacillus mycoides) were the most prominent. These two strains were examined for functional diversity using Biolog phenotyping, which confirmed the consumption of diverse carbon and nitrogen sources and tolerance to low pH and osmotic stress. The inoculated bacterial strains colonized the sugarcane rhizosphere successfully and were mostly located in root and leaf. The expression of the nifH gene in both sugarcane varieties (GT11 and GXB9) inoculated with CY5 and CA1 was confirmed. The gene expression studies showed enhanced expression of genes of various enzymes such as catalase, phenylalanine-ammonia-lyase, superoxide dismutase, chitinase and glucanase in bacterial-inoculated sugarcane plants.
The results showed that a substantial number of Bacillus isolates have N-fixation and biocontrol property against two sugarcane pathogens Sporisorium scitamineum and Ceratocystis paradoxa. The increased activity of genes controlling free radical metabolism may at least in part accounts for the increased tolerance to pathogens. Nitrogen-fixation was confirmed in sugarcane inoculated with B. megaterium and B. mycoides strains using N-balance and
N
isotope dilution in different plant parts of sugarcane. This is the first report of Bacillus mycoides as a nitrogen-fixing rhizobacterium in sugarcane.
COVID-19, the current global pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2 infection, can damage the heart and lead to heart failure (HF) and even cardiac death. The 2',5'-oligoadenylate synthetase (OAS) gene family ...encode interferon (IFN)-induced antiviral proteins which is associated with the antiviral immune responses of COVID-19. While the potential association of OAS gene family with cardiac injury and failure in COVID-19 has not been determined.
The expression levels and biological functions of OAS gene family in SARS-CoV-2 infected cardiomyocytes dataset (GSE150392) and HF dataset (GSE120852) were determined by comprehensive bioinformatic analysis and experimental validation. The associated microRNAs (miRNAs) were explored from Targetscan and GSE104150. The potential OAS gene family-regulatory chemicals or ingredients were predicted using Comparative Toxicogenomics Database (CTD) and SymMap database.
The OAS genes were highly expressed in both SARS-CoV-2 infected cardiomyocytes and failing hearts. The differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in the two datasets were enriched in both cardiovascular disease and COVID-19 related pathways. The miRNAs-target analysis indicated that 10 miRNAs could increase the expression of OAS genes. A variety of chemicals or ingredients were predicted regulating the expression of OAS gene family especially estradiol.
OAS gene family is an important mediator of HF in COVID-19 and may serve as a potential therapeutic target for cardiac injury and HF in COVID-19.

Bacteria-based self-healing concrete is a relatively new technique, therefore it is important to gather more results in simulate real conditions before applied on a bigger scale. In the present study, bacteria-based self-healing concrete was developed by adding the microbial self-healing agent which has the potential to improve self-healing capacity mainly by bacteria induced mineral precipitations. The precipitations formed at the cracks surface of the cement paste specimens were analyzed with Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) equipped with an Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectrometer (EDS), and then examined by X-ray Diffraction (XRD). Moreover, the influence of crack width, curing ways and cracking age on the crack self-healing of cement paste with microbial self-healing agent was researched by the characterization methods of area repair rate and anti-seepage repair rate. The results showed that the microbial self-healing agent could be used to achieve the goal of concrete crack self-healing. The precipitations formed at the cracks surface were calcite, which appeared lamellar close packing morphology. However, the capacity of concrete crack self-healing depended on many factors. The crack was more and more difficult to be repaired with the increase of average crack width and the repair ability of microbial repair agent was limited for specimens with crack width up to 0.8mm. Water curing was shown to be the best way for bacteria-based self-healing concrete. In addition, the crack healing ratio of specimens dropped significantly along with the extension of cracking age. When the cracking age was more than 60days, the crack healing ratio was very small. The results above suggested that the optimal conditions were needed for the practical application of microbial self-healing agent.
The diazotrophic Burkholderia anthina MYSP113 is a vital plant growth-promoting bacteria and sugarcane root association. The present study based on a detailed analysis of sugarcane root transcriptome ...by using the HiSeq-Illumina platform in response to the strain MYSP113. The bacterium was initially isolated from the rhizosphere of sugarcane. To better understand biological, cellular, and molecular mechanisms, a de novo transcriptomic assembly of sugarcane root was performed. HiSeq-Illumina platformwas employed for the sequencing of an overall of 16 libraries at a 2×100 bp configuration. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) analysis identified altered gene expression in 370 genes (total of 199 up-regulated genes and 171 down-regulated genes). Deciphering the huge datasets, concerning the functioning and production of biological systems, a high throughput genome sequencing analysis was attempted with Gene ontology functional analyses and the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway analysis. The report revealed a total of 148930 unigenes. 70414 (47.28%) of them were annotated successfully to Gene Ontology (GO) terms. 774 at 45 days, 4985 of 30 days and 15 days of 6846 terms were significantly regulated. GO analysis revealed that many genes involved in the metabolic, oxidation-reduction process and biological regulatory processes in response to strain MYSP113 and significantly enriched as compare to the control. Moreover, KEGG enriched results show that differentially expressed genes were classified into different pathway categories involved in various processes, such as nitrogen metabolism, plant hormone signal transduction, etc. The sample correlation analyses could help examine the similarity at the gene expression level. The reliability of the observed differential gene expression patterns was validated with quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR). Additionally, plant enzymes activities such as peroxidase and superoxide dismutase were significantly increased in plant roots after the inoculation of strain MYSP113. The results of the research may help in understanding the plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria and plant interaction.
The initial cases of novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV)-infected pneumonia (NCIP) occurred in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China, in December 2019 and January 2020. We analyzed data on the first 425 confirmed ...cases in Wuhan to determine the epidemiologic characteristics of NCIP.
We collected information on demographic characteristics, exposure history, and illness timelines of laboratory-confirmed cases of NCIP that had been reported by January 22, 2020. We described characteristics of the cases and estimated the key epidemiologic time-delay distributions. In the early period of exponential growth, we estimated the epidemic doubling time and the basic reproductive number.
Among the first 425 patients with confirmed NCIP, the median age was 59 years and 56% were male. The majority of cases (55%) with onset before January 1, 2020, were linked to the Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market, as compared with 8.6% of the subsequent cases. The mean incubation period was 5.2 days (95% confidence interval CI, 4.1 to 7.0), with the 95th percentile of the distribution at 12.5 days. In its early stages, the epidemic doubled in size every 7.4 days. With a mean serial interval of 7.5 days (95% CI, 5.3 to 19), the basic reproductive number was estimated to be 2.2 (95% CI, 1.4 to 3.9).
On the basis of this information, there is evidence that human-to-human transmission has occurred among close contacts since the middle of December 2019. Considerable efforts to reduce transmission will be required to control outbreaks if similar dynamics apply elsewhere. Measures to prevent or reduce transmission should be implemented in populations at risk. (Funded by the Ministry of Science and Technology of China and others.).

China is the world’s third largest sugar producing country after Brazil and India. During milling years 2004/2005 and 2013/2014, the average yearly sugar production in China was 11.64 MT, 49.86 % ...more that in the previous decade. However, the major increase came from Guangxi province, which produced 7.21 MT sugar per annum in average in recent decade, increased by 104.25 % compared to the production of 3.53 MT sugar per annum in average during 1994/1994 and 2003/2004. Sugarcane contributed more than 90 % of the total sugar production in recent decade. Chinese sugar industry encompasses 270 operating sugar mills, 233 sugarcane, and 37 sugar beet. In the milling year 2007/2008, the total sugar production in China reached 14.83 MT, which was 24.04 % higher than that in previous milling year; and cane sugar production reached 13.67 MT, which occupied 92.18 % of the total. However, the severe low temperature and drought occurred almost every year since 2008, which caused continuous in cane and sugar productivity in the subsequent years. The sugar production began recovering since 2011/2012, and reached 13.32 MT sugar in 2013/2014, still 10.18 % lower than that in 2007/2008. Guangxi is the largest sugarcane and sugar producer in China, 9.41 MT sugar in 2007/2008, and 8.56 MT sugar in 2013/2014. Besides, many products, such as pulp, paper, alcohol, yeast, xylitol, chemicals, cane juice, bio-manure, feed, and electricity are also produced from sugarcane. The sugar industry is also the major contributor to the socio-economic development of the major cane producing areas especially Guangxi, Yunnan and western Guangdong.
Sugarcane ratoon stunting disease (RSD) caused by Leifsonia xyli subsp. xyli (Lxx) is a common destructive disease that occurs around the world. Lxx is an obligate pathogen of sugarcane, and previous ...studies have reported some physiological responses of RSD-affected sugarcane. However, the molecular understanding of sugarcane response to Lxx infection remains unclear. In the present study, transcriptomes of healthy and Lxx-infected sugarcane stalks and leaves were studied to gain more insights into the gene activity in sugarcane in response to Lxx infection. RNA-Seq analysis of healthy and diseased plants transcriptomes identified 107,750 unigenes. Analysis of these unigenes showed a large number of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) occurring mostly in leaves of infected plants. Sugarcane responds to Lxx infection mainly via alteration of metabolic pathways such as photosynthesis, phytohormone biosynthesis, phytohormone action-mediated regulation, and plant-pathogen interactions. It was also found that cell wall defense pathways and protein phosphorylation/dephosphorylation pathways may play important roles in Lxx pathogeneis. In Lxx-infected plants, significant inhibition in photosynthetic processes through large number of differentially expressed genes involved in energy capture, energy metabolism and chloroplast structure. Also, Lxx infection caused down-regulation of gibberellin response through an increased activity of DELLA and down-regulation of GID1 proteins. This alteration in gibberellic acid response combined with the inhibition of photosynthetic processes may account for the majority of growth retardation occurring in RSD-affected plants. A number of genes associated with plant-pathogen interactions were also differentially expressed in Lxx-infected plants. These include those involved in secondary metabolite biosynthesis, protein phosphorylation/dephosphorylation, cell wall biosynthesis, and phagosomes, implicating an active defense response to Lxx infection. Considering the fact that RSD occurs worldwide and a significant cause of sugarcane productivity, a better understanding of Lxx resistance-related processes may help develop tools and technologies for producing RSD-resistant sugarcane varieties through conventional and/or molecular breeding.
Sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum L.) is an important crop for sugar and bioenergy worldwide. The increasing greenhouse gas emission and global warming during climate change result in the increased ...frequency and intensity of extreme weather events. Climate change is expected to have important consequences for sugarcane production in the world, especially in the developing countries because of relatively low adaptive capacity, high vulnerability to natural hazards, and poor forecasting systems and mitigating strategies. Sugarcane production may have been negatively affected and will continue to be considerably affected by increases in the frequency and intensity of extreme environmental conditions due to climate change. The degree of climate change impact on sugarcane is associated with geographic location and adaptive capacity. In this paper, we briefly reviewed sugarcane response to climate change events, sugarcane production in several different countries, and challenges for sugarcane production in climate change in order for us to better understand effects of climate change on sugarcane production and to propose strategies for mitigating the negative impacts of climate change and improving sugarcane production sustainability and profitability.
