A partial wave analysis of the pp¯ mass-threshold enhancement in the reaction J/ψ→γpp¯ is used to determine its J(PC) quantum numbers to be 0(-+), its peak mass to be below threshold at ...M=1832(-5)(+19)(stat)(-17)(+18)(syst)±19(model) MeV/c(2), and its total width to be Γ<76 MeV/c(2) at the 90% C.L. The product of branching ratios is measured to be BRJ/ψ→γX(pp¯)BRX(pp¯)→pp¯=9.0(-1.1)(+0.4)(stat)(-5.0)(+1.5)(syst)±2.3(model)×10(-5). A similar analysis performed on ψ(3686)→γpp¯ decays shows, for the first time, the presence of a corresponding enhancement with a production rate relative to that for J/ψ decays of R=5.08(-0.45)(+0.71)(stat)(-3.58)(+0.67)(syst)±0.12(model)%.
We report a new measurement of electron antineutrino disappearance using the fully constructed Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment. The final two of eight antineutrino detectors were installed in ...the summer of 2012. Including the 404 days of data collected from October 2012 to November 2013 resulted in a total exposure of 6.9×10^{5} GW_{th} ton days, a 3.6 times increase over our previous results. Improvements in energy calibration limited variations between detectors to 0.2%. Removal of six ^{241}Am-^{13}C radioactive calibration sources reduced the background by a factor of 2 for the detectors in the experimental hall furthest from the reactors. Direct prediction of the antineutrino signal in the far detectors based on the measurements in the near detectors explicitly minimized the dependence of the measurement on models of reactor antineutrino emission. The uncertainties in our estimates of sin^{2}2θ_{13} and |Δm_{ee}^{2}| were halved as a result of these improvements. An analysis of the relative antineutrino rates and energy spectra between detectors gave sin^{2}2θ_{13}=0.084±0.005 and |Δm_{ee}^{2}|=(2.42±0.11)×10^{-3} eV^{2} in the three-neutrino framework.
Searches for electron antineutrino, muon neutrino, and muon antineutrino disappearance driven by sterile neutrino mixing have been carried out by the Daya Bay and MINOS+ collaborations. This Letter ...presents the combined results of these searches, along with exclusion results from the Bugey-3 reactor experiment, framed in a minimally extended four-neutrino scenario. Significantly improved constraints on the θμe mixing angle are derived that constitute the most constraining limits to date over five orders of magnitude in the mass-squared splitting Δm241, excluding the 90% C.L. sterile-neutrino parameter space allowed by the LSND and MiniBooNE observations at 90% CLs for Δm241 < 13 eV2. Furthermore, the LSND and MiniBooNE 99% C.L. allowed regions are excluded at 99% CLs for Δm241 < 1.6 eV2.
Stem and progenitor cells play important roles in the development and maintenance of teeth and bone. Surface markers expressed in bone marrow–derived mesenchymal stem cells are also expressed in ...dental tissue–derived stem cells. Mouse skeletal stem cells (mSSCs, CD45−Ter119−Tie2−CD51+Thy−6C3−CD105−CD200+) and human skeletal stem cells (hSSCs, CD45−CD235a−TIE2−CD31−CD146−PDPN+CD73+CD164+) have been identified in bone and shown to play important roles in skeletal development and regeneration. However, it is unclear whether dental tissues also harbor mSSC or hSSC populations. Here, we employed rainbow tracers and found that clonal expansion occurred in mouse dental tissues similar to that in bone. We sorted the mSSC population from mouse periodontal ligament (mPDL) tissue and mouse dental pulp (mDP) tissue in the lower incisors by fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS). In addition, we demonstrated that mPDL-derived skeletal stem cells (mPDL-SSCs) and mDP-derived skeletal stem cells (mDP-SSCs) have similar clonogenic capacity, as well as cementogenic and odontogenic potential, but not adipogenic potential, similar to the characteristics of mSSCs. Moreover, we found that the dental tissue–derived mSSC population plays an important role in repairing clipped incisors. Importantly, we sorted the hSSC population from human periodontal ligament (hPDL) and human dental pulp (hDP) tissue in molars and identified its stem cell characteristics. Finally, hPDL-like and hDP-like structures were generated after transplanting hPDL-SSCs and hDP-SSCs beneath the renal capsules. In conclusion, we demonstrated that mouse and human PDL and DP tissues harbor dental stem cells similar to mSSCs and hSSCs, respectively, providing a precise stem cell population for the exploration of dental diseases.
Objectives
To evaluate the associations between cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk burden (estimated by the World Health Organization (WHO) algorithm) and cognitive impairments (e.g., incident ...dementia, global and domain-specific impairments) among CVD-, dementia- and disability-free, community-dwelling middle-aged and older adults during an 8-year follow-up.
Design
A community-based longitudinal cohort study.
Setting
Yuanshan township in Yi-Lan County, Taiwan.
Participants
A total of 889 community-dwelling residents aged 50 years or older.
Measurements
Age, sex, educational level, employment status, alcohol status, body mass index, physical activity, gait speed, depressive symptoms, WHO region-specific CVD risk scores (10-year CV risk, low: <10% vs. moderate-to-high: ≥ 10%), Chinese version of the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), verbal memory by the delay-free recall in the Chinese Version Verbal Learning Test (CVVLT), language function by the Boston Naming Test and the category (animal) Verbal Fluency Test, visuospatial function by the Taylor Complex Figure Test, executive function by the digit backward and the Clock Drawing Test.
Results
Compared to those with low CVD risk, middle-aged and older adults with moderate-to-high CVD risk were at greater risk for cognitive impairments with respect to the MMSE (adjusted odds ratio (aOR) 1.60 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.19–2.15, P=0.002), verbal memory (aOR 1.97 1.43-2.70, P< 0.001) and language (aOR 1.99 1.46–2.70, P< 0.001), as well as incident dementia (aOR 2.40 1.33–4.33, P=0.004). After adjusting for all covariates, CVD risk was not associated with other domains of cognitive impairment.
Conclusions
Among healthy, community-dwelling, middle-aged and older adults, those with moderate-to-high cardiovascular risk burden were significantly associated with incident dementia and global and domain-specific cognitive impairments (verbal memory and language), which suggests the existence of a relationship between early cognitive deficits and CVD risk burden. Further studies are needed to elucidate the pathophysiological mechanism of the link between CVD risk burden and cognitive impairment.
ABSTRACT X-ray flares are generally supposed to be produced by later activities of the central engine, and may share a similar physical origin with the prompt emission of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). In ...this paper, we have analyzed all significant X-ray flares from the GRBs observed by Swift from 2005 April to 2015 March. The catalog contains 468 bright X-ray flares, including 200 flares with redshifts. We obtain the fitting results of X-ray flares, such as start time, peak time, duration, peak flux, fluence, peak luminosity, and mean luminosity. The peak luminosity decreases with peak time, following a power-law behavior . The flare duration increases with peak time. The 0.3-10 keV isotropic energy of the distribution of X-ray flares is a log-normal peaked at erg. We also study the frequency distributions of flare parameters, including energies, durations, peak fluxes, rise times, decay times, and waiting times. Power-law distributions of energies, durations, peak fluxes, and waiting times are found in GRB X-ray flares and solar flares. These distributions could be well explained by a fractal-diffusive, self-organized criticality model. Some theoretical models based on magnetic reconnection have been proposed to explain X-ray flares. Our result shows that the relativistic jets of GRBs may be dominated by Poynting flux.
Adenosquamous carcinoma (ASC) of the lung is a heterogeneous disease that is composed of both adenocarcinoma components (ACC) and squamous cell carcinoma components (SCCC). Their genomic profile, ...genetic origin, and clinical management remain controversial.
Resected ASC and metastatic tumor in regional lymph nodes (LNs) were collected. The ACC and SCCC were separated by microdissection of primary tumor. The 1021 cancer-related genes were evaluated by next-generation sequencing independently in ACC and SCCC and LNs. Shared and private alterations in the two components were investigated. In addition, genomic profiles of independent cohorts of adenocarcinomas and squamous cell carcinomas were examined for comparison. We have also carried out a retrospective study of ASCs with known EGFR mutation status from 11 hospitals in China for their clinical outcomes.
The most frequent alterations in 28 surgically resected ASCs include EGFR (79%), TP53 (68%), MAP3K1 (14%) mutations, EGFR amplifications (32%), and MDM2 amplifications (18%). Twenty-seven patients (96%) had shared variations between ACC and SCCC, and pure SCCC metastases were not found in metastatic LNs among these patients. Only one patient with geographically separated ACC and SCCC had no shared mutations. Inter-component heterogeneity was a common genetic event of ACC and SCCC. The genomic profile of ASC was similar to that of 170 adenocarcinomas, but different from that of 62 squamous cell carcinomas. The incidence of EGFR mutations in the retrospective analysis of 517 ASCs was 51.8%. Among the 129 EGFR-positive patients who received EGFR-TKIs, the objective response rate was 56.6% and the median progression-free survival was 10.1 months (95% confidence interval: 9.0–11.2).
The ACC and SCCC share a monoclonal origin, a majority with genetically inter-component heterogeneity. ASC may represent a subtype of adenocarcinoma with EGFR mutation being the most common genomic anomaly and sharing similar efficacy to EGFR TKI.
•The adenocarcinoma component and squamous cell carcinoma component of adenosquamous carcinoma share a common clonal origin.•High incidence of trunk EGFR and TP53 mutation were noted in adenosqumous cell carcinoma, while the overall genomic profile of adenosqumous cell carcinoma is more similar to adenocarcinoma than squmous cell carcinoma.•EGFR-TKIs should be the standard first-line therapy for advanced stage adenosquamous carcinoma with EGFR mutation.
The DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE), one of the four scientific space science missions within the framework of the Strategic Pioneer Program on Space Science of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, ...is a general purpose high energy cosmic-ray and gamma-ray observatory, which was successfully launched on December 17th, 2015 from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center. The DAMPE scientific objectives include the study of galactic cosmic rays up to ∼ 10 TeV and hundreds of TeV for electrons/gammas and nuclei respectively, and the search for dark matter signatures in their spectra. In this paper we illustrate the layout of the DAMPE instrument, and discuss the results of beam tests and calibrations performed on ground. Finally we present the expected performance in space and give an overview of the mission key scientific goals.

Baseline IC was measured by 5 subdomains, including cognition (Montreal Cognitive Assessment, MoCA), sensory (visual and hearing impairment), vitality (handgrip strength or Mini-Nutritional Assessment-short form), psychological well-being (Geriatric Depression Scale-5), and locomotion (6m gait speed). Outcomes of interest were cognitive performance (MoCA scores) and physical frailty (CHS frailty score) over a follow-up period of 6 and 12 months.
Of all participants (mean age:75.1±6.4 years, 68.6% female), about 90% participants had IC impairment at baseline (2.0±1.2 subdomains). After covariate adjustment using a generalized linear mixed model (GLMM), the multidomain intervention significantly prevented cognitive declines and physical frailty, particularly in those with IC impairment ≥ 3 subdomains (MoCA: coefficient: 1.909, 95% CI: 0.736 ~ 3.083; CHS frailty scores: coefficient = -0.405, 95% CI: -0.715 ~ -0.095). To assess the associations between baseline poor capacity in each IC subdomain and MoCA/CHS frailty scores over follow-up, a 3-way interaction terms (time*intervention*each poorer IC subdomains) were added to GLMM models. Significant improvements in MoCA scores were shown for participants with poorer baseline cognition (coefficient= 1.138, 95% CI: 0.080 ~ 2.195) and vitality domains (coefficient= 1.651, 95% CI: 0.541 ~ 2.760). The poor vitality domain also had a significant modulating effect on the reduction of CHS frailty score after the 6- and 12-month intervention period (6 months: coefficient= -0.311, 95% CI: -0.554 ~ -0.068; 12 months: coefficient= -0.257, 95% CI: -0.513 ~ -0.001).
A multidomain intervention in community-dwelling older adults improves cognitive decline and physical frailty, with its effectiveness influenced by baseline IC, highlighting the importance of personalized strategies for healthy aging.
