Hydroclimate in the montane cloud forest (MCF) regions is unique for its frequent fog occurrence and abundant water interception by tree canopies. Latent heat (LH) flux, the energy flux associated ...with evapotranspiration (ET), plays an essential role in modulating energy and hydrological cycles. However, how LH flux is partitioned between transpiration (stomatal evaporation) and evaporation (nonstomatal evaporation) and how it impacts local hydroclimate remain unclear. In this study, we investigated how fog modulates the energy and hydrological cycles of MCF by using a combination of in situ observations and model simulations. We compared LH flux and associated micrometeorological conditions at two eddy-covariance sites—Chi-Lan (CL), an MCF, and Lien-Hua-Chih (LHC), a noncloud forest in Taiwan. The comparison between the two sites reveals an asymmetric LH flux with an early peak at 0900 local time in CL as opposed to LHC, where LH flux peaks at noon. The early peak of LH flux and its evaporative cooling dampen the increase in near-surface temperature during the morning hours in CL. The relatively small diurnal temperature range, abundant moisture brought by the valley wind, and local ET result in frequent afternoon fog formation. Fog water is then intercepted by the canopy, sustaining moist conditions throughout the night. To further illustrate this hydrological feedback, we used a land surface model to simulate how varying canopy water interception can affect surface energy and moisture budgets. Our study highlights the unique hydroclimatological cycle in the MCF and, specifically, the inseparable relationship between the canopy and near-surface meteorology during the diurnal cycle.

Frailty is common among older adults, often associated with activity limitations during physical and walking tasks. The interactive boxing-cycling combination has the potential to be an innovative and efficient training method, and our hypothesis was that interactive boxing-cycling would be superior to stationary cycling in improving frailty and activity limitations in frail and prefrail older adults.
To examine the impact of interactive boxing-cycling on frailty and activity limitations in frail and prefrail older adults compared to stationary cycling.
A single-blinded randomized controlled trial. Forty-five participants who met at least one frailty phenotype criteria were randomly assigned to receive either interactive boxing-cycling (n = 23) or stationary-cycling (n = 22) for 36 sessions over 12 weeks. The interactive boxing-cycling was performed on a cycle boxer bike with an interactive boxing panel fixed in front of the bike. The primary outcomes were frailty status, including score and phenotypes. Secondary outcomes included activity limitations during physical and walking tasks. The pre- and post-intervention data of both groups were analyzed using a repeated measures two-way ANOVA.
Both types of cycling significantly improved frailty scores (p<0.001). Interactive boxing-cycling was more effective than stationary cycling in reversing the frailty phenotype of muscle weakness (p = 0.03, odds ratio 9.19) and demonstrated greater improvements than stationary cycling in arm curl (p = 0.002, η2=0.20), functional reach (p = 0.001, η2=0.22), and grip strength (p = 0.02, η2=0.12) tests. Additionally, interactive boxing-cycling exhibited a greater effect on gait speed (p = 0.02, η2=0.13) and gait variability (p = 0.01, η2=0.14) during dual-task walking.
In frail and prefrail older adults, interactive boxing-cycling effectively improves frailty but is not superior to stationary cycling. However, it is more effective at improving certain activity limitations.

Ten individuals with hemiplegia (mean age 61.8 years, injury time 29.8 ± 15.2 months) performed the STS with and without squeezing a ball between two legs. The joint moments, ground reaction force (GRF), chair reaction force and movement durations and temporal index of electromyography were calculated from the control condition for comparison with those from the ball squeezing condition.
Under the squeeze condition, reduced peak vertical GRF during the ascension phase with increased loading rate was observed in the nonparetic limb, and the peak knee extensor moment occurred earlier in the paretic. Earlier activation of tibialis anterior and gluteus maximus, and gluteus medius were found in squeeze STS.
Squeezing a ball between limbs during STS increased the contraction timing of tibialis anterior, gluteus maximus, gluteus medius, and soleus as well as a more symmetric rising mechanics encourage the use of squeezing a ball between limbs during STS for individuals with hemiparesis.
In the present report, we describe a case of sclerosing orbital pseudotumor in an 11‐year‐old castrated male American Shorthair cat. Ophthalmic exam showed lagophthalmos, retracted right upper ...eyelid, and resistant to retropulsion in his right eye. Under magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans, increased volume of the extraocular muscles (EOMs) of the right eye was prominent. Immunosuppressive dosage of prednisolone partially ameliorated the clinical signs, but some clinical signs were still gradually progressive or persistent. In the second MRI scan, decreased diameter of the thickened right extraocular muscles was found. After the third MRI scan, enucleation of the right eye was performed due to substantial adverse effects of systemic steroid therapy. Histopathological examination revealed no evidence of neoplastic transformation nor infection. Feline restrictive orbital myofibroblastic sarcoma (FROMS) was therefore excluded, suggesting unknown causes of extensive fibrotic changes in the right orbit of the affected cat.

Pressure ulcers are a common problem among individuals who, for medical reasons, must spend most of their day in bed. Manually turning a person's body is labor intensive and can easily cause ...occupational injuries. To compare the effectiveness of a new assisted turning mattress in pressure management with that of a conventional air mattress. This is a single-session crossover trial study. Twenty-four participants confined to bed were transferred onto the selected mattress (assisted turning or conventional air mattresses) in the selected position. Average interface pressures of bony prominences were measured after the participants laid on the mattress in different positions. After the data collection, they were transferred to the second mattress, and the process was repeated. Subjective feedback from participants and caregivers was also acquired immediately following a one-week trial period of assisted turning mattresses. The mean interface pressures were comparable for most body parts between two mattresses. Subjective feedback showed that assisted turning mattresses could relieve caregivers' workload but at the cost of patients' decreased feelings of safety. Assisted turning mattresses are equal to conventional air mattresses in pressure distribution. Proper pressure management through scheduled positional changes is required in assisted turning mattresses.

Avian reoviruses (ARVs) are important pathogens that cause considerable economic losses in poultry farming. To date, host factors that control stabilization of ARV proteins remain largely unknown. In this work we determined that the eukaryotic chaperonin T-complex protein-1 (TCP-1) ring complex (TRiC) is essential for avian reovirus (ARV) replication by stabilizing outer-capsid protein σC, inner core protein σA, and the non-structural protein σNS of ARV. TriC serves as a chaperone of viral proteins and prevent their degradation via the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway. Furthermore, reciprocal co-immunoprecipitation assays confirmed the association of viral proteins (σA, σC, and σNS) with TRiC. Immunofluorescence staining indicated that the TRiC chaperonins (CCT2 and CCT5) are colocalized with viral proteins σC, σA, and σNS of ARV. In this study, inhibition of TRiC chaperonins (CCT2 and CCT5) by the inhibitor HSF1A or shRNAs significantly reduced expression levels of the σC, σA, and σNS proteins of ARV as well as virus yield, suggesting that the TRiC complex functions in stabilization of viral proteins and virus replication. This study provides novel insights into TRiC chaperonin governing virus replication via stabilization of outer-capsid protein σC, inner core protein σA, and the non-structural protein σNS of ARV.
The specifics of cell receptor-modulated avian reovirus (ARV) entry remain unknown. By using a viral overlay protein-binding assay (VOPBA) and an in-gel digestion coupled with liquid ...chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), we determined that cell-surface annexin A2 (AnxA2) and adhesion G protein-coupled receptor Latrophilin-2 (ADGRL2) modulate ARV entry. Direct interaction between the ARV σC protein and AnxA2 and ADGRL2 in Vero and DF-1 cells was demonstrated
by proximity ligation assays. By using short hairpin RNAs (shRNAs) to silence the endogenous AnxA2 and ADGRL2 genes, ARV entry could be efficiently blocked. A significant decrease in virus yields and the intracellular specific signal for σC protein was observed in Vero cells preincubated with the specific AnxA2 and ADGRL2 monoclonal antibodies, indicating that AnxA2 and ADGRL2 are involved in modulating ARV entry. Furthermore, we found that cells pretreated with the AnxA2/S100A10 heterotetramer (A2t) inhibitor A2ti-1 suppressed ARV-mediated activation of Src and p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), demonstrating that Src and p38 MAPK serve as downstream molecules of cell-surface AnxA2 signaling. Our results reveal that suppression of cell-surface AnxA2 with the A2ti-1 inhibitor increased Csk-Cbp interaction, suggesting that ARV entry suppresses Cbp-mediated relocation of Csk to the membrane, thereby activating Src. Furthermore, reciprocal coimmunoprecipitation assays revealed that σC can interact with signaling molecules, lipid raft, and vimentin. The current study provides novel insights into cell-surface AnxA2- and ADGRL2-modulated cell entry of ARV which triggers Src and p38 MAPK signaling to enhance caveolin-1-, dynamin 2-, and lipid raft-dependent endocytosis.
By analyzing results from VOPBA and LC-MS/MS, we have determined that cell-surface AnxA2 and ADGRL2 modulate ARV entry. After ARV binding to receptors, Src and p38 MAPK signaling were triggered and, in turn, increased the phosphorylation of caveolin-1 (Tyr14) and upregulated dynamin 2 expression to facilitate caveolin-1-mediated and dynamin 2-dependent endocytosis. In this work, we demonstrated that ARV triggers Src activation by impeding Cbp-mediated relocation of Csk to the membrane in the early stages of the life cycle. This work provides better insight into cell-surface AnxA2 and ADGRL2, which upregulate Src and p38MAPK signaling pathways to enhance ARV entry and productive infection.
Dementia is a leading cause of disability and dependence in older adults worldwide. The aim of this pilot study was to explore the effect of using a kazoo instrument to improve pulmonary function and ...cognitive reserve in middle-aged and older adults in rural areas. This quasi-experimental study was conducted at two community care stations selected using cluster sampling from a rural district in southern Taiwan. We enrolled 85 middle-aged and older adults who were randomly assigned into self-learner and in-class groups. Both groups received a 6-month kazoo program. Cognitive and pulmonary function were compared before and after the intervention between the two groups. Significantly improved pulmonary function with regards to forced vital capacity (p < .05) was found in the self-learner group, and significantly improved maximum expiratory flow 75% (p < .001) was found in both groups. Mini-Mental State Examination scores significantly improved in the self-learner group (p < .01), but there was no significant change in the in-class group. Our results suggest that community care stations could consider implementing wind instrument programs such as a kazoo to enhance pulmonary function and cognitive reserve in middle-aged and older adults residing in rural areas.
Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy is recommended as treatment for stones in chronic pancreatitis. The aim of this study was to investigate the risk factors for complications of pancreatic ...extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (P-ESWL).
Patients with painful chronic pancreatitis and pancreatic stones (> 5 mm diameter) who were treated with P-ESWL between March 2011 and June 2013 were prospectively included. Adverse events after P-ESWL were classified as complications and transient adverse events, depending on severity. The major complications of P-ESWL included post-ESWL pancreatitis, bleeding, infection, steinstrasse, and perforation. Multivariate analyses based on univariate analysis were performed to detect risk factors of overall and moderate-to-severe complications.
A total of 634 patients underwent 1470 P-ESWL procedures. The overall complication rate was 6.7 % of all procedures. Complications occurred in 62 patients (9.8 %) after the first ESWL procedure. The risk factors for complications were pancreas divisum (odds ratio OR 1.28) and the interval between diagnosis of chronic pancreatitis and P-ESWL (OR 1.28). Protective factors were male sex (OR 0.50), diabetes (OR 0.45), and steatorrhea (OR 0.43). Male sex, the only identified predictor for moderate-to-severe complications, was a protective factor (OR 0.19). For the second P-ESWL procedure, complications occurred in 22/409 patients (5.4 %). Complication and asymptomatic hyperamylasemia after the first ESWL session were significantly associated with higher risk for complications after the second ESWL session (P < 0.05).
Patient-related factors were important in determining a high risk of P-ESWL complications when no procedure-related factors were identified. Patients suffering from complications after the first ESWL session were also likely to experience complications in subsequent P-ESWL sessions.
