Quantifying atmospheric CO2 over long periods from space is crucial in understanding the carbon cycle's response to climate change. However, a single satellite offers limited spatiotemporal coverage, ...making comprehensive monitoring challenging. Moreover, biases among various satellite retrievals hinder their direct integration. This study proposed a machine learning framework for fusing the column‐averaged dry‐air mole fraction of CO2 (XCO2) retrievals from Greenhouse Gases Observing Satellite (GOSAT) and OCO‐2 satellites. The best model (R2 = 0.85) presented improved consistency of GOSAT retrievals by reducing 71.5% of the average monthly bias while using OCO‐2 retrievals as a benchmark, indicating the fusion data set's potential to enhance observation coverage. Incorporating the adjusted GOSAT XCO2 retrievals into the OCO‐2 data set added an average of 84.7 thousand observations annually, enhancing the yearly temporal coverage by 53.6% (from 14 to 21.5 days per grid). This method can be adapted to other satellites, maximizing satellite resources for a more robust carbon flux inversion.

CO2 sources and sinks are primarily regulated by anthropogenic emissions, photosynthesis and respiration on land and in the ocean, as well as by physical dissolution and carbonate chemistry with ocean circulation. The consistent long‐term quantification of atmospheric CO2 concentrations using satellite observations plays a pivotal role in understanding the response of global and regional carbon cycles to climate change. However, satellites have a revisit period, and factors like cloud and aerosol scattering impact the quality and quantity of their observations. A single satellite currently falls short of the demand to monitor global carbon sources and sinks, necessitating the integration of observations from various satellites to conduct carbon flux inversions. Different satellites come with distinct sampling patterns, instrument parameters, and retrieval algorithms, which leads to biases in their retrieval products. Our study, focusing on OCO‐2 and GOSAT, employs machine learning models to improve consistency between retrievals derived from these two satellites, thus generating a harmonized data set. The bias‐corrected GOSAT XCO2 retrievals exhibit high spatiotemporal consistency with OCO‐2 XCO2 retrievals, immensely enhancing the observational constraints for carbon flux inversions. This method holds promise for application to recently launched and future satellites, aiming to offer carbon flux inversions with amplified spatiotemporal observational constraints.

Forest canopy height is an indispensable forest vertical structure parameter for understanding the carbon cycle and forest ecosystem services. A variety of studies based on spaceborne Lidar, such as ...ICESat, ICESat-2 and airborne Lidar, were conducted to estimate forest canopy height at multiple scales. However, while a few studies have been conducted based on ICESat-2 simulated data from airborne Lidar data, few studies have analyzed ATL08 and ATL03 products derived from the ATLAS sensor onboard ICESat-2 for regional vegetation canopy height mapping. It is necessary and promising to explore how data obtained by ICESat-2 can be applied to estimate forest canopy height. This study proposes a new means to estimate forest canopy height, defined as the mean height of trees within a given forest area, using a combination of ICESat-2 ATL08 and ATL03 data and ZY-3 satellite stereo images. Five procedures were used to estimate the forest canopy height of the city of Nanning in China: (1) Processing ground photons in a 30 m × 30 m grid; (2) Extracting a digital surface model (DSM) using ZY-3 stereo images; (3) Calculating a discontinuous canopy height model (CHM) dataset; (4) Validating the DSM and ground photon height using GEDI data; (5) Estimating the regional wall-to-wall forest canopy height product based on the backpropagation artificial neural network (BP-ANN) model and Landsat 8 vegetation indices and independent accuracy assessments with field measured plots. The validation shows a root mean square error (RMSE) of 3.34 m to 3.47 m and a coefficient of determination R2 = 0.51. The new method shows promise and can be used for large-scale forest canopy height mapping at various resolutions or in combination with other data, such as SAR images. Finally, this study analyzes resolutions and how to filter effective data when ATL08 data are directly used to generate regional or global vegetation height products, which will be the focus of future research.
The Polio Endgame Strategy 2019-2023 has been developed. However, more effective and efficient surveillance activities should be conducted with the preparedness of emergence for vaccine-derived ...poliovirus (VDPV) or wild poliovirus (WPV). We reviewed the impact of the case-based acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) surveillance (1991 to 2018) and environmental surveillance (2011 to 2018) in polio eradication in Shandong province of China. Clinical characteristics of AFP cases and enterovirus (EV) investigation of research samples were assessed. During the period, 10,224 AFP cases were investigated, and 352 sewage samples were collected. The nonpolio AFP rate sustained at over 2.0/100,000 since 1997. Of 10,224 cases, males and young children experienced a higher risk of severe diseases, and 68.5% suffered lower limb paralysis. We collected 1,707 EVs from AFP cases, including 763 polioviruses and 944 nonpolio enteroviruses (NPEVs). No WPV was isolated since 1992. The AFP surveillance showed high sensitivity in detecting 143 vaccine-associated paralytic poliomyelitis (VAPP) cases and 6 VDPVs. For environmental surveillance, 217 (61.6%) samples were positive for poliovirus, and altogether, 838 polioviruses and 2,988 NPEVs were isolated. No WPV was isolated in environmental surveillance, although one VDPV2 was identified. Phylogenetic analysis revealed environmental surveillance had the capacity to detect a large scope of NPEVs. The case-based AFP surveillance will be indispensable for detecting VAPP cases and VDPV circulation in countries using oral polio vaccine. Environmental surveillance is advantageous in identifying EV circulation and responding to ongoing circulating VDPV outbreaks and should be expanded to complement the AFP surveillance.
Interrupting wild poliovirus transmission and stopping circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus (cVDPV) outbreaks have been proposed as two global goals by the World Health Organization in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI). This analysis, based on the 28-year acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) surveillance and 8-year environmental surveillance, provides continued high-quality surveillance performance in achieving the GPEI and detecting the circulation of enterovirus. Given the ongoing cVDPV outbreaks in the world, we present the surveillance capacity of environmental surveillance in capturing enterovirus circulation. The final poliovirus (especially VDPV) elimination has become increasingly complex, and the case-based AFP surveillance alone will lead to difficulties in early detecting dynamics of poliovirus transmission and monitoring the extent of environmental circulation. This study goes beyond previous work to provide a detailed comprehensive evaluation of the enterovirus surveillance and can be used to formulate a set of implementation plan and performance indicators for environmental surveillance.
It has been reported that folic acid supplementation before and/or during pregnancy could reduce the risk of congenital heart defects (CHDs). However, the results from limited epidemiologic studies ...have been inconclusive. We investigated the associations between maternal folic acid supplementation, dietary folate intake, and the risk of CHDs.
A birth cohort study was conducted in 2010-2012 at the Gansu Provincial Maternity & Child Care Hospital in Lanzhou, China. After exclusion of stillbirths and multiple births, a total of 94 births were identified with congenital heart defects, and 9,993 births without any birth defects. Unconditional logistic regression was used to estimate the associations.
Compared to non-users, folic acid supplement users before pregnancy had a reduced risk of overall CHDs (OR: 0.42, 95% CI: 0.21-0.86, Ptrend = 0.025) after adjusted for potential confounders. A protective effect was observed for certain subtypes of CHDs (OR: 0.37, 95% CI: 0.16-0.85 for malformation of great arteries; 0.26, 0.10-0.68 for malformation of cardiac septa; 0.34, 0.13-0.93 for Atrial septal defect). A similar protective effect was also seen for multiple CHDs (OR: 0.49, 95% CI: 0.26-0.93, Ptrend = 0.004). Compared with the middle quartiles of dietary folate intake, lower dietary folate intake (<149.88 μg/day) during pregnancy were associated with increased risk of overall CHDs (OR: 1.63, 95% CI: 1.01-2.62) and patent ductus arteriosus (OR: 1.85, 95% CI: 1.03-3.32). Women who were non-user folic acid supplement and lower dietary folate intake have almost 2-fold increased CHDs risk in their offspring.
Our study suggested that folic acid supplementation before pregnancy was associated with a reduced risk of CHDs, lower dietary folate intake during pregnancy was associated with increased risk. The observed associations varied by CHD subtypes. A synergistic effect of dietary folate intake and folic acid supplementation was also observed.
Dynamic physical examination data can provide both cross-sectional and time-series characteristics of cardiovascular health. However, most physical examination databases containing health and disease ...information have not been fully utilized in China. Hence, this study aimed to analyze dynamic physical examination indicators for cardiovascular health to provide evidence for precise prevention and control of cardiovascular diseases in the primary prevention domain among healthy population with different demographic characteristics in Shanghai. Three-year continuous data were collected from the physical examination center of a hospital in Shanghai from 2018 to 2020, which included a total of 14,044 participants with an average age of 46.51±15.57 years. The cardiovascular status of overall healthy individuals may have a decreasing trend, which is manifested as a significant year-on-year decrease in high-density lipoprotein cholesterol; a significant year-on-year increase in total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and blood glucose levels; and a possible increasing trend of diastolic blood pressure, body mass index, and triglycerides. Healthy population with different sex and age groups have various sensitives to cardiovascular physical examination indicators. To conduct more accurate cardiovascular health management and health promotion for key populations in primary prevention, focusing on the dynamic trends of blood pressure, blood lipids, blood glucose, and body mass index in men and changes in total cholesterol in women over time is especially important. The age group of 50-69 years is key for better prevention and control of cardiovascular health.
A relatively rare aldehyde dehydrogenase 1 (ALDH1)-positive "stem cell-like" subpopulation of tumor cells has the unique ability to initiate and perpetuate tumor growth; moreover, it is highly ...resistant to chemotherapy and significantly associated with poor clinical outcomes. The development of more effective therapies for cancer requires targeting of this cell population. Using cDNA microarray analysis, we identified that the expression of the Caenorhabditis elegans lin-28 homologue (LIN28) was positively correlated with the percentage of ALDH1+ tumor cells; this was further validated in an independent set of tissue arrays (n=197). Both loss-of-function and gain-of-function studies showed that LIN28 plays a critical role in the maintenance of ALDH1+ tumor cells. In addition, we found that there is a double-negative feedback loop between LIN28 and let-7 in tumor cells, and that let-7 negatively regulates ALDH1+ tumor cells. Finally, we report that a LIN28/let-7 loop modulates self-renewal and differentiation of mammary gland epithelial progenitor cells. Our data provide evidence that cancer stem cells may arise through a "reprogramming-like" mechanism. A rebalancing of the LIN28/let-7 regulatory loop could be a novel therapeutic strategy to target ALDH1+ cancer stem cells.
Polymorphisms of methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) in hormone metabolism pathways might cause metabolic disturbances and contribute to the development of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) ...and ovarian cancer, but the published studies were inconsistent. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the MTHFR C677T (rs1801133) and A1298C (rs1801131) gene polymorphisms in the risk of PCOS and ovarian cancer by meta-analysis. A comprehensive electronic search was conducted in databases for studies published from 1995 to 2020. The pooled ORs were calculated by Revman 5.2 software. Twenty-nine articles including 45 case-control studies were included. We found that MTHFR C677T polymorphisms were correlated with elevated PCOS risk (TT vs. CT+CC: OR = 1.41, 95%CI = 1.20-1.67; TT+CT vs. CC: OR = 1.54, 95%CI = 1.07-2.22; CT vs. CC+TT: OR = 1.18, 95%CI 1.04-1.33; TT vs. CC: OR = 1.47, 95%CI = 1.03-2.11; T vs. C: OR = 1.25, 95%CI = 1.06-1.47), which were more obvious in Middle Eastern subgroup. MTHFR A1298C polymorphisms were also associated with overall PCOS susceptibility (CC vs. AC+AA: OR = 2.55, 95% CI = 1.61-4.03; CC+AC vs. AA: OR = 1.84, 95%CI = 1.04-3.28; CC vs. AA: OR = 2.66, 95%CI = 1.68-4.22; C vs. A: OR = 1.67, 95%CI = 1.03-2.71), which were mainly reflected in Asian subjects. For ovarian cancer, MTHFR C677T polymorphisms were only related with elevated ovarian cancer risk in Asian population, while no significant association was found for A1298C polymorphisms. This meta-analysis suggested that MTHFR C677T and MTHFR A1298C polymorphisms were correlated with elevated PCOS risk. MTHFR C667T only posed a higher risk for ovarian cancer in Asians instead of other populations, while MTHFR A1298C polymorphisms were not related to ovarian cancer risk. Further studies are needed to validate the conclusion.
The impact of atrial fibrillation (AF) on the clinical outcomes in patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS) who received endovascular thrombectomy remains unclear. We aimed to perform a ...meta-analysis of adjusted effect estimates to examine the association between the presence of AF and the clinical outcomes in patients with AIS who received endovascular thrombectomy.
We searched PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane database between January 1, 2013 and July 10, 2023. Data were meta-analyzed to compare the outcomes among patients with AIS with and without AF who received endovascular thrombectomy. Our primary outcome was 90-day functional independence defined as a modified Rankin Scale score of 0 to 2. Secondary outcomes included excellent independence (90-day modified Rankin Scale score of 0-1), 90-day mortality, symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage, and any intracranial hemorrhage. Eighteen observational studies comprising 16 096 patients with AIS (mean age, 70.1 years; women, 48.2%; 6862 with AF versus 9234 without AF) were included. There were no statistically significant differences for modified Rankin Scale score of 0 to 2 (pooled odds ratio OR, 1.14 95% CI, 0.95-1.37; 95% prediction interval PI, 0.72-1.80), mortality (OR, 0.92 95% CI, 0.79-1.08; 95% PI, 0.77-1.11), symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage (OR, 0.97 95% CI, 0.71-1.32; 95% PI, 0.43-2.17), and any intracranial hemorrhage (OR, 1.08 95% CI, 0.91-1.28; 95% PI, 0.74-1.58) among patients with AIS with and without AF.
This meta-analysis detected no significant differences in 90-day functional outcomes, mortality, and intracerebral hemorrhage risk after endovascular thrombectomy in patients with AIS with and without AF.

Environmental surveillance has been used successfully in monitoring enterovirus (EV) circulation; however cell culture method may introduce a selective bias in those EV strains that are recovered ...from the environment. In this study, urban sewage samples were collected monthly in Jinan, China in 2018 and concentrated via membrane adsorption/elution method. A P1 seminested RT-PCR (RT-snPCR) and NGS method was developed, by which amplicons of 4000 nucleotide in length covering the entire P1 region of EVs were obtained from sewage concentrates and were further analyzed by next generation sequencing (NGS). In addition, for each sewage concentrate, two other assays - cell culture and NGS based partial VP1 amplicon sequencing - were conducted in parallel and compared. The results showed that the P1 RT-snPCR and NGS method generated the most data, with 32 serotypes identified belonging to species EV-A (n = 11), EV-B (n = 14), and EV-C (n = 7). These serotypes covered all those detected from the methods of cell culture (n = 10) and partial VP1 amplicon sequencing (n = 16). EV serotypes from acute flaccid paralysis surveillance correlated with those from sewage. Phylogenetic analysis on coxsackievirus B5, a common pathogen of meningitis, revealed close genetic relationship between environmental and clinical sequences. These results demonstrate sewage contains different EVs related to a variety of diseases. Traditional cell culture method underestimates the existence of some serotypes. NGS based environmental surveillance provides data which are consistent with those from clinical diseases, greatly improves our understanding on the actual circulation in the population, and should be encouraged for public health surveillance.

Omono River virus (OMRV) is a newly reported, unclassified RNA virus in the family Totiviridae, which infects mosquitoes and bats. In this study, we report the isolation of an OMRV strain SD76 from ...Culex tritaeniorhynchus captured in Jinan city, China. The cytopathic effect was characterized by cell fusion on C6/36 cell line. Its complete genome was 7611 nucleotides in length, with 71.4-90.4% similarities with other OMRV strains. Phylogenetic analysis based on complete genomes showed all OMRV-like strains can be divided into 3 groups with between-group distances ranging from 0.254 to 0.293. These results revealed that the OMRV isolate had high genetic diversity with those identified previously, and enriched the genetic information of family Totiviridae.
