Landslides cause significant disturbances to mountainous ecosystems and human activities. Due to climate change, the frequency of landslides as secondary disasters has notably increased compared to ...the past. Further exploration is needed to understand the effects of different restoration methods on post-landslide plant communities and soil properties over different periods of time. In this regard, we selected Lantian County in the northern foothills of the Qinling Mountains as our study area. We conducted surveys on artificially restored and naturally recovered plots at 1, 6, and 11 years after landslide events. Undamaged areas were chosen nearby as control plots. We identified vegetation types and species diversity after artificial and natural recovery and further analyzed the impact of different restoration strategies on vegetation patterns and soil properties. The research results indicate that, compared with natural recovery, artificial restoration can more quickly improve vegetation and soil. With the increasing time gradient, the average ground cover of the herbaceous layer in natural recovery decreased gradually from 47% at year one to 34% at year eleven. In contrast, in artificial restoration, the average ground cover of the herbaceous layer increased from 27% at year one to 44% at year eleven. For the shrub layer, in natural recovery, the average ground cover gradually increased to 39% over eleven years. While in artificial restoration, the average ground cover for the shrub layer gradually increased to 46% over the same period. In the artificial restoration plots, soil pH gradually increased (from 6.2 to 8.2), while TN content gradually decreased (from 1.7 g/kg to 0.9 g/kg). Similarly, TK content decreased (from 22.4 g/kg to 14.5 g/kg), and AP content showed a decreasing trend (from 20.7 mg/kg to 11.4 mg/kg). In the natural recovery plots, DNA content gradually increased (from 3.2 μg/g/d to 142.6 μg/g/d), and SC content gradually increased as well (from 2.4 mg/d/g to 23.1 mg/d/g). In contrast, on sites undergoing natural recovery, the short-term restoration rates of vegetation and soil are lower, but they show greater stability over a longer time. This study provides a new perspective on vegetation restoration strategies and is expected to offer insights for the optimization of post-landslide recovery in the future.
Objective
We aimed to reveal the role of structural and functional alterations of cingulate gyrus in early cognitive impairment in Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients.
Methods
Fifty‐six T2DM ...patients and 60 healthy controls (HCs) underwent a neuropsychological assessment and sagittal three‐dimensional T1‐weighted and resting‐state functional MRI. Differences in the cortical thickness of the cingulate cortex and the functional connectivity (FC) of the nine subregions of the cingulate gyrus and the whole brain were compared between T2DM patients and HCs. Correlation analysis was performed between cortex thickness and FC and the participants' clinical/cognitive variables.
Results
The cortical thickness of the cingulate gyrus was not significantly different between T2DM patients and HCs. However, the T2DM patients showed significantly lower FC between the pregenual ACC (pACC) and the bilateral hippocampus, significantly higher FC between the pACC and bilateral lateral prefrontal cortex (LPFC) and left precentral gyrus, and significantly lower FC between the retrosplenial cortex (RSC) and right cerebellar Crus I. The FC between the pACC and the left hippocampus was negatively correlated with the FC between the pACC and LPFC (r = −0.306, p = 0.022).
Interpretation
The pACC and the RSC show dysfunctional connectivity before the appearance of structural abnormalities in T2DM patients. Abnormal FC of the pACC with the bilateral hippocampus and LPFC may imply a neural compensatory mechanism for memory function. These findings provide valuable information and new directions for possible interventions for the T2DM‐related cognitive impairment.
To investigate the effects of emodin on alkali burn-induced corneal inflammation and neovascularization.
The ability of emodin to target vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2 (VEGFR2) was ...predicted by molecular docking. The effects of emodin on the invasion, migration, and proliferation of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) were determined by cell counting kit-8, Transwell, and tube formation assays. Analysis of apoptosis was performed by flow cytometry. CD31 levels were examined by immunofluorescence. The abundance and phosphorylation state of VEGFR2, protein kinase B (Akt), signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3), and P38 were examined by immunoblot analysis. Corneal alkali burn was performed on 40 mice. Animals were divided randomly into two groups, and the alkali-burned eyes were then treated with drops of either 10 μM emodin or phosphate buffered saline (PBS) four times a day. Slit-lamp microscopy was used to evaluate inflammation and corneal neovascularization (CNV) in all eyes on Days 0, 7, 10, and 14. The mice were killed humanely 14 d after the alkali burn, and their corneas were removed and preserved at －80 ℃ until histological study or protein extraction.
Molecular docking confirmed that emodin was able to target VEGFR2. The findings revealed that emodin decreased the invasion, migration, angiogenesis, and proliferation of HUVEC in a dose-dependent manner. In mice, emodin suppressed corneal inflammatory cell infiltration and inhibited the development of corneal neovascularization induced by alkali burn. Compared to those of the PBS-treated group, lower VEGFR2 expression and CD31 levels were found in the emodin-treated group. Emodin dramatically decreased the expression of VEGFR2, p-VEGFR2, p-Akt, p-STAT3, and p-P38 in VEGF-treated HUVEC.
This study provides a new avenue for evaluating the molecular mechanisms underlying corneal inflammation and neovascularization. Emodin might be a promising new therapeutic option for corneal alkali burns.
Although disturbed functional connectivity is known to be a factor influencing cognitive impairment, the neuropathological mechanisms underlying the cognitive impairment caused by type 2 diabetes ...mellitus (T2DM) remain unclear. To characterize the neural mechanisms underlying T2DM-related brain damage, we explored the altered functional architecture patterns in different cognitive states in T2DM patients. Thirty-seven T2DM patients with normal cognitive function (DMCN), 40 T2DM patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) (DMCI), and 40 healthy controls underwent neuropsychological assessments and resting-state functional MRI examinations. Functional connectivity density (FCD) analysis was performed, and the relationship between abnormal FCD and clinical/cognitive variables was assessed. The regions showing abnormal FCD in T2DM patients were mainly located in the temporal lobe and cerebellum, but the abnormal functional architecture was more extensive in DMCI patients. Moreover, in comparison with the DMCN group, DMCI patients showed reduced long-range FCD in the left superior temporal gyrus (STG), which was correlated with the Rey auditory verbal learning test score in all T2DM patients. Thus, DMCI patients show functional architecture abnormalities in more brain regions involved in higher-level cognitive function (executive function and auditory memory function), and the left STG may be involved in the neuropathology of auditory memory in T2DM patients. These findings provide some new insights into understanding the neural mechanisms underlying T2DM-related cognitive impairment.
Reward dysfunctions have been reported in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), which implicates a high possibility of anhedonia for this disease. However, several components of anhedonia, such as ...consummatory and anticipatory pleasure, has not been substantially studied in OCD patients.
The Chinese version of the Temporal Experience of Pleasure Scale (CV-TEPS) was used to evaluate both the consummatory and anticipatory pleasure in 130 OCD patients, 89 major depressive disorder (MDD) patients, and 95 healthy controls (HCs). The Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale (Y-BOCS) and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) were scored for assessing the severity of obsessive and compulsive symptoms and depressive symptoms, respectively. Analyses of covariance (ANCOVA) were used to compare the differences of anhedonia among the three groups with the severity of depression controlled. Regression analyses were also used to analyze the relationship between consummatory and anticipatory pleasure and clinical variables in OCD patients.
After controlling for the effect of depression, there were significant differences in TEPS scores among the three groups (
< 0.05). Compared with HCs, OCD patients had lower scores on the consummatory subscale, but not the anticipatory subscale, of the TEPS. MDD patients had lower scores on both the consummatory and anticipatory subscales than HCs.
OCD patients exhibit deficits in consummatory but not anticipatory pleasure, which is distinct from MDD patients.
Obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD) is one of the most prevalent personality disorders in general population. However, neural mechanisms underlying OCPD remain elusive. The aim of this ...study is to use functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to examine whether OCPD patients will exhibit altered spontaneous brain activity as compared to healthy controls (HC).
Resting-state fMRI data were acquired in 37 OCPD patients and 37 matched HC. Amplitudes of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF) were calculated and compared between the two groups. Correlation analysis was performed between regional ALFF values and OCPD severity scores.
Significant group differences in regional ALFF were found in multiple brain regions. Compared to HCs, OCPD subjects had increased ALFF in bilateral caudate, left precuneus, left insula, and left medial superior frontal gyrus, and decreased ALFF in the right fusiform gyrus and left lingual gyrus. The ALFF values in the left precuneus correlated with OCPD severity scores.
We excluded patients with comorbidity and did not conduct cognitive function assessments. Our findings are also limited to cross-sectional analysis.
OCPD patients exhibit altered spontaneous neural activity as compared to healthy controls in multiple brain regions, which may reflect different characteristic symptoms of OCPD pathophysiology, including cognitive inflexibility, excessive self-control, lower empathy, and visual attention bias.

Klebsiella michiganensis is a recently emerging human pathogen causing nosocomial infections. This study aimed to characterize the complete genome sequence of a clinical Klebsiella michiganensis ...strain KMIB106 which exhibited extensive drug-resistance. The whole genome of the strain was sequenced using PacBio RS III systems and Illumina Nextseq 500. Annotation, transposable elements and resistance gene identification were analyzed by RAST, prokka and Plasmid Finder, respectively. According to the results, KMIB106 was resistant to multiple antimicrobials, including carbapenems, but it remained susceptible to aztreonam. The genome of KMIB106 consisted of a single chromosome and three predicted plasmids. Importantly, a novel KPC plasmid pB106-1 was found to carry the array of resistance genes in a highly different order in its variable regions, including mphA, msrE, mphE, ARR-3, addA16, sul1, dfrA27, tetD and fosA3. Plasmid pB106-2 is a typical IncFII plasmid with no resistant gene. Plasmid pB106-IMP consists of the IncN and IncX3 backbones, and two resistance genes, blaIMP-4 and blaSHV-12, were identified. Our study for the first time reported an extensively drug-resistant Klebsiella michiganensis strain recovered from a child with a respiratory infection in Southern China, which carries three mega plasmids, with pB106-1 firstly identified to carry an array of resistance genes in a distinctive order, and pB106-IMP identified as a novel IncN-IncX3 cointegrate plasmid harboring two resistance genes blaIMP-4 and blaSHV-12.
Previous studies have indicated the resting-state default mode network (DMN) related connectivity serving as predictor of sustained attention performance in healthy people. Interestingly, sustained ...attention deficits as well as DMN-involved functional connectivity (FC) alterations are common in both patients with schizophrenia (SCZ) and with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Thus, the present study was designed to investigate whether the DMN related resting-state connectivity alterations in these two psychiatric disorders were neural correlates of their sustained attention impairments.
The study included 17 SCZ patients, 35 OCD patients and 36 healthy controls (HCs). Sustained attention to response task was adopted to assess the sustained attention. Resting-state scan was administrated and seed-based whole-brain FC analyses were performed with seeds located in classical DMN regions including bilateral medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) and posterior cingulate cortex (PCC).
Both SCZ and OCD patients had poorer sustained attention than HCs. Sustained attention deficits in OCD was negatively correlated with their impaired FC of right mPFC-left superior frontal gyrus (SFG) within DMN, and that in SCZ was significantly correlated with their altered FC of left mPFC-bilateral anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) which indicated interaction between DMN and salience network. In addition, the FC between left mPFC and right parietal lobe indicating the interaction between DMN and frontal-parietal network was correlated with sustained attention in both SCZ and OCD.
These findings suggest the importance of DMN-involved connectivity, both within and between networks in underlying sustained attention deficits in OCD and SCZ. Results further support the potential of resting-state FC in complementing information for cognitive deficits in psychiatric disorders.
