The purpose of this article was to examine Kinesiology Doctoral Students' (DS) perspectives on their training as researchers received during doctoral study. Using the Kinesiology Doctoral Student ...(KDS) survey, 121 current and past DS provided information on nine different aspects related to research training. Specifically, these items consisted of measures of DS perceptions on: (a) establishment of a good foundation for doing independent research and awareness of customary practices related to (i) publishing; (ii) determining authorship; (iii) researching funding; (iv) using data responsibly; (v) reviewing academic papers; (vi) bio-safety, human subjects, and/or animal care; (vii) obtaining research funds; and (viii) enjoyment of conducting research. This topic was viewed through three lenses: (a) status (past and current DS), (b) gender, and (c) sub-disciplines (social and behavior sciences SBS research and health/hard sciences HS research). The following statistically significant findings were found: (a) understanding practices related to determining authorship (p > .001), with males reporting a higher mean score M= 2.51 than females M = 2.08 and (b) understanding practices related to research funding (p > .05) with the HS (M= 2.20) showing greater confidence than SBS (M = 1.91) participants.

Specifically, these items consisted of measures of DS perceptions on: (a) working with the advisor they wanted, (b) satisfaction with the process by which they came to have their advisors, (c) satisfaction with the amount and quality of time spent with advisor, (d) wanting to switch advisors but being unable to do so, (e) advisor's reputation to get students through the process in a timely manner, (f) advisor had funding to support students, (g) advisor was recommended by other people, (h) advisor's reputation as a good researcher, (i) advisor's reputation as a good teacher, and (j) advisor's ability to foster a positive work environment in research work groups. This topic was viewed through three lenses: (a) status (past and current DS), (b) gender, and (c) subdisciplines (social and behavioral sciences SBS research and health/hard sciences HS research). The following statistically significant findings were revealed: (a) past participants were significantly more satisfied with their advisor choice on this item (I wish I could have switched advisors but was unable to do so) compared to current participants and (b) past participants rated this item (had a reputation for being a good researcher) significantly higher than current participants. Open-ended comments spoke to the importance of selecting the "right advisor."

Using the Kinesiology Doctoral Student (KDS) ...survey, 121 current and past DS provided information on nine different items related to teacher training. Specifically, these items consisted of measures of: (a) enjoyment, (b) clear understanding of teaching responsibilities, (c) ability to teach a lecture, (d) preparedness to teach a lab course, (e) ability to teach specialized graduate courses, (f) ability to address diversity issues, (g) preparedness to advise undergraduates, and (h) preparedness to advise graduate students. This topic was viewed through three lenses: (a) status (past and current DS), (b) gender, and (c) sub-disciplines (social and behavioral sciences SBS research and health/hard sciences HS research). The following statistical significant findings were revealed: (a) SBS participants had a clearer understanding of their teaching responsibilities than HS participants, (b) SBS participants perceived a significant higher ability to teach lecture and laboratory courses compared to HS participants, (c) SBS participants had significantly higher perceptions of their ability to address diversity than HS participants, and (d) current participants felt more prepared to advise both graduate and undergraduate students than their past participant counterparts.
In this thematic issue, we examined Doctoral Students' (DS) perspectives on six topics: (a) dissertation, (b) teacher training, (c) research training, (d) advisors, (e) doctoral program and ...department, and (f) career perspectives (past DS). Each topic was viewed through three lenses: (a) status (past and current DS), (b) gender, and (c) sub-disciplines (SBS and HS). We offer the following recommendations: (a) align program requirements with skills and knowledge needed for success after graduation; (b) develop mentoring programs that address research, teaching, and service to prepare DS for life after the degree; (c) intentionally add DS voices to the conversation about doctoral studies and other professional debates; and (d) develop questions and select criteria for potential DS, so they have the necessary information to make an informed decision about a program that fits their career goals.

Using the Kinesiology Doctoral Student (KDS) survey, 121 current and past DS ...provided information on 10 different aspects related to teacher training. Specifically, the items consisted of measures of DS perceptions on: (a) enrollment pattern, (b) requirements-(e.g., master's degree, comprehensive exam, etc.), (c) hurdles (qualifiers, prelims, orals, etc.), (d) flexibility of doctoral program, (e) annual review, (f) whether DS have active role in decisions, (g) competition for faculty attention, (h) being part of a supportive community, (i) understanding of time to completion, (j) selection of a different advisor, (k) selection of a different university, and (l) not going to graduate school. Descriptive data analyses of: (a) enrollment pattern revealed that 87% of DS were enrolled full-time and (b) many requirements were a part of the DS program. This topic was viewed through three lenses: (a) status (past and current DS), (b) gender, and (c) subdisciplines (SBS and HS). When t-tests were applied, three significant differences emerged: (a) current participants viewed exams and other program benchmarks as arbitrary obstacles when compared to past participants, (b) males viewed exams and other program benchmarks as arbitrary obstacles when compared to females, and (c) past participants had a clearer understanding of how long he/she would be a DS compared to current participants.

In this article, we examined Past Kinesiology Doctoral Students' (DS) perspectives on issues related to their career experiences. Using the Kinesiology Doctoral Student (KDS) survey, 56 past DS ...provided information on nine different aspects related to their current careers. Specifically, the items consisted of (a) type of position, (b) employment pattern, (c) type of institution, (d) change in interest regarding becoming a professor, (e) change in interest related to teaching, (f) change in interest related to conducting research, (g) enjoyment, and (h) work load. The first three items were handled descriptively revealing the following: (a) 80.8% of past participants were faculty with an academic appointment, (b) 95.6% were employed full-time, and (c) 41.3% were employed at comprehensive universities. The remaining six items were viewed through two lenses: gender and sub-disciplines (social and behavioral sciences SBS research and health/hard sciences HS research). The following statistical significant findings were found: (a) males' interest in their career "stayed the same" or "increased," whereas females' "stayed the same" (p < .03), (b) HS participants' interest in conducting research "increased" compared to SBS participants whose interest "stayed the same" (p < .05), and (c) SBS participants rated their enjoyment of working on a college campus significantly higher than HS participants (p < .004).

Using the Kinesiology Doctoral Student (KDS) survey, ...121 current and past DS provided information on nine different aspects related to their dissertations. Specifically, these items consisted of measures of (a) how research was conducted, (b) manuscripts for publication, (c) research setting, (d) how the dissertation topic was selected, (e) how the dissertation topic was related to work being done by their advisor, (f) satisfaction of the process for arriving at the dissertation topic, (g) interest in the topic, and (h) relationship of topic to advisor's research. This topic was viewed through three lenses: (a) past and current DS, (b) gender, and (c) sub-disciplines (social and behavioral sciences SBS research and health/hard sciences HS research). The first three items were analyzed descriptively and showed the following: (a) the vast majority of dissertations were conducted individually with some input from faculty and/or committee members, (b) participants were split evenly between manuscripts for publication (non-traditional dissertation) and traditional dissertation, and (c) lab-based and field-based settings were the most frequently selected research settings. SBS participants were statistically superior (p< .02) to HS participants regarding satisfaction with the manner in which DS selected their dissertation topics.
Rate constants have been obtained using oxygen isotope exchange techniques for steps controlling ATP release and Pi binding in the ATPase cycle of insect flight muscle fibres from the giant waterbug ...Lethecerus. The new exchange data for Pi binding and ATP release are compatible with a model developed previously in which only the rate constants controlling Pi and ATP release change during fibre activation. Phosphate-water oxygen exchange occurs into ATP remaining after partial hydrolysis by chemically skinned fibres in (18O) water. For fully activated fibres, the results are compatible with a single set of rate constants controlling this exchange and give a rate constant for ATP release of 1 s-1 (21 degrees C, pH 7.0 I = 120 mM). Oxygen exchange also occurs between (18O4)Pi in the medium and water during ATP hydrolysis. There is a strong correlation between the measured rate constant of exchange and the value of keat for the ATPase activity at different levels of activation. For fibres fully activated by oscillation or strain, the rate constant for Pi binding to an actomyosin. ADP state is greater than 960 M-1 s-1.
