This article serves two purposes. First, it attempts to examine the joint impact of corporate governance mechanisms and corporate social responsibility (CSR) practice on firm performance. Second, the ...moderating role of board independence is investigated on 588 non-financial Malaysian firms listed on Bursa Malaysia during the period 2006–2017. Both accounting-based return on assets (ROA) and market-based (Tobin’s Q) performance measures have been used for measuring performance. Dynamic model using Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) has been employed on the data set to control for potential endogeneity, reverse causality and dynamic heterogeneity. Findings indicate that ROA is a better determinant of firm performance than Tobin’s Q, where ownership concentration, managerial ownership and money spent on CSR negatively affect ROA; however, an insignificant relationship is observed with Tobin’s Q. Finally, board independence negatively moderates governance-CSR and firm performance relationship. Findings of this article have implications for Bursa Malaysia and Securities Commission Malaysia to reset the limit of independent directors on board so that their unnecessary interference in operations of management may be avoided. Furthermore, companies need to reassess their CSR strategies whether they are spending on CSR activities or hiding their financial malfeasance in the name of money spent on CSR.

Packaging for cheese products usually uses plastic with a polymer base. Plastic is divided into two types: plastic made from synthetic polymer raw materials (difficult to decompose) and plastic made ...from natural polymer raw materials. The impact of using plastic with synthetic polymer materials, or what is usually called commercial plastic, will cause a buildup of waste and result in environmental pollution, so a solution for packaging using bioplastic is needed. This research was conducted to determine the characteristics of bioplastics with the addition of beeswax and glucomannan. By examining the variables of thickness, water resistance, water vapor permeability, biodegradability, tensile strength, and elongation, we will analyze the characteristics of bioplastics that have been enhanced with beeswax and glucomannan. The results showed that the addition of beeswax and glucomannan had no significant effect (p > 0.05) on thickness, water vapor permeability, biodegradability, tensile strength, and elongation. However, the addition of beeswax and glucomannan had a significant effect (p > 0.05) on water resistance. The addition of beeswax and glucomannan also increased (p <0.05) the results of water resistance and tensile strength while reducing (p <0.05) the results of thickness, water vapor permeability, biodegradability, and bioplastic elongation. It can be concluded that beeswax and glucomannan are able to provide strong bioplastic characteristics and have protective properties for products with a longer shelf life at room temperature.
This study aims at determining the optimum fortification with red dragon fruit peel extract evaporated with MAE method towards the physicchemistry characteristics of symbiotic yogurt. The research ...object is symbiotic yogurt made of pasteurized fresh milk, red dragon fruit peel extract evaporated with Microwave Assisted Extraction (MAE) method and evaporated with rotary vacuum evaporator, and yoghurt starter containing lactic acid bacteria: Streptococcus thermophilus and Lactobacillus bulgaricus (1:1). The study employs an experiment with Complete Random Design in four treatments including without fortification with red dragon fruit peel extract (P0) and with fortification with red dragon fruit peel extract at 10% (P1), 20% (P2), and 30% (P3) (v/v) with three replications. The variables to be analyzed include physical quality (pH, viscosity, syneresis), color (L*, a*, b*) and chemical quality (acid total, lipid and protein level). The data were analyzed using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). If there was a difference, the analysis would be continued using Duncan multiple Range Test. The result indicates that the fortification with red dragon fruit peel extract shows significant differences on the pH level (P<0,05), viscosity (P<0,01), syneresis, color (L*, a*, b*) and chemical quality of symbiotic yoghurt. Fortification with red dragon fruit peel extract reduces the pH level and syneresis while it increases viscosity, total acid and protein level because of the fiber content i. e. pectin which functions as a stabilizer. Moreover, it also decreases the lipid profile and increases the turbidity (L*, b* and a*) values. It is concluded that the optimum fortification of 20% with red dragon fruit peel extract evaporated using MAE method results in symbiotic yoghurt observed from its physic-chemistry quality.
The study aims to understand the interaction between cocoa polyphenol nanoparticles with whey protein isolate (WPI) bond between polyphenol cocoa nanoparticles with whey protein isolate (WPI) and the ...role of the nanoparticles of cocoa polyphenols as bioactive compounds in the nano-polyphenol cocoa whey protein. The research method is performed using laboratory experiments with a completely randomized design (CRD), followed by Duncan analysis (DMRT) when there are significant or highly significant differences in each treatment. This research focused on the nanoparticles of cocoa polyphenols in the formulation of the nano-polyphenol cocoa whey protein with 4 treatments (T0: 0%, T1: 5%, T2: 10%, T3: 15%) and 3 replications. The observed variables include total phenolic, antioxidant activity, particle size, emulsion activity, and emulsion stability. The difference in the concentration of the nanoparticles of cocoa results in highly significant differences (P<0.01) in total phenolic, antioxidant activity, and particle size. Gave a significant difference (P<0.05) in the emulsion activity, but does not show a significant difference in the emulsion stability (P>0.05). It can be concluded that cocoa 15% nanoparticles (T3) are the best treatment from other treatments and is able to synergize with whey protein isolate (WPI), improve emulsion quality and have natural antioxidant content used as an alternative for food fortification ingredients

Purpose
The purpose of this paper is twofold. First, it aims to investigate the dynamic impact of board composition (board size, board independence and board diversity) on independent corporate ...social responsibility (CSR) practices (marketplace, environment, community and workplace). Second, it tends to examine the mutual effect of board composition and CSR practices on organizational returns (return on assets and Tobin’s Q) of 631 Malaysian PLCs listed on Bursa Malaysia during 2006-2017.
Design/methodology/approach
The dynamic model (system GMM) provided by Arellano and Bond (1991) and Arellano and Bover (1995) is used for estimations that control for potential dynamic endogeneity, reverse causality, unobserved heterogeneity and simultaneity problems.
Findings
Findings reveal weak linkage between board composition and CSR practices where only board diversity is found to be positively linked to marketplace practices of CSR. Further, the mutual impact of board composition and CSR practices on organizational returns suggests board size be positive and board independence to be negative with Tobin’s Q. Board diversity is negative with ROA and positive with Tobin’s Q. Conversely, CSR practices indicate marketplace practices are positive and community practices are negative with Tobin’s Q, environment practices are insignificant with performance, whereas workplace practices are positive with ROA and negative with Tobin’s Q.
Practical implications
This research is practically considerable for Bursa Malaysia, Securities Commission Malaysia, policymakers, stakeholders, investors and managers. For academia, the theoretical linkages between agency theory, resource dependence theory, resource-based view and stakeholder theory are highlighted. Moreover, methodological underpinnings are also novel for academicians as well as for practitioners.
Originality/value
The paper uncovers multiple aspects: first, it elaborates the dynamic relationship between board composition and CSR practices; second, it examines the combined effect of board composition and CSR practices on company’s accounting and market gains; finally, the study controls for dynamic endogeneity that is the main econometric problem for CG-CSR-performance relationships.
The meat and slaughterhouse industry produces two products, namely prime cut and by-products. By-products in some areas are considered waste and thrown away, but there are also some areas that used ...as animal feed or edible materials that can be consumed directly by humans. By-products from meat and slaughterhouse industry can be in the form of bone, skin, offal, blood, feather, and feet. Many studies show that by-products from meat and slaughterhouse industry also have high protein content and have potential as source of peptides with certain biological activities. Bioactive peptides are molecules composed of 2-20 amino acids in a certain sequence and have biological activity that is not active in the structure of the parent protein. Some of the biological activities of peptides sourced from livestock by-products are antioxidant, antidiabetic, and ACE inhibitor. Bioactive peptides from livestock by-products have also received much attention from researchers, due to their low cost and abundant sources. Several methods have been developed to produce bioactive peptides, such as chemical, enzymatic, and fermentation methods. The aim of this review was to update and summarize several recent studies regarding bioactive peptides from livestock by-products and their potential biological activities.
