Under the scheme of the Kyoto Protocol, there are plans for the efficient reduction of carbon dioxide emissions. In the electric power sector, nuclear power generation, which emits no carbon dioxide ...in the process of generating electricity, has come under scrutiny. However, this energy produces a new environmental issue: the disposal of radioactive waste. First, we derive shadow prices of carbon dioxide and low-level waste as marginal abatement costs in the case of the electric power sector in Japan, employing a directional output distance function. It is found that the shadow prices are US$39 per tonne for carbon dioxide and US$1531 per liter for low-level waste. Secondly, we calculate the indirect Morishima elasticity between carbon dioxide and low-level waste in order to identify their substitutability, and it is found that the substitution of low-level waste for carbon dioxide is easier than the reverse. This result suggests that, with the amount of generated electricity fixed, carbon dioxide can be substituted more easily by low-level waste when the relative price of carbon dioxide increases, for example, as a result of implementation of a carbon dioxide tax or an emissions trading system.
The purpose of this study is to assess the effects of natural capital on overall subjective well-being and forest-related subjective well-being. A questionnaire survey of 1698 urban and rural ...residents living in a watershed of Japan was conducted in February and March of 2016. Multiple regression and moderation effect analyses are conducted to statistically estimate the respective influences of natural capital, human-made capital, social capital, human capital, and other demographic factors on the above-mentioned two types of subjective well-being. Forest-related activities, human engagement with forests, are supposed to be of great societal and political importance for Japanese society, where past management practices have, at least quantitatively, restored forests from past deforestation. Our statistical analysis tests whether specific engagement with natural capital (forest-related activities) is positively related to subjective well-being. Following the capability approach developed by Amartya Sen, forest-related activities are interpreted as functionings, and the analysis highlights the importance of functionings as links between natural capital and subjective well-being. The results show several forest-related activities have statistically significant effects on overall and forest-related well-being. For respondents living in less forested areas and with less social capital, forest-related activities have stronger effects on their subjective well-being, suggesting that the individual subjective well-being of urban residents and those with less social capital can be enhanced through engagement with forests.

This article investigates the shadow value of resilience in complex natural lands acting as wild pollinator habitats. We capture the linkage between pollination services in crop production and ...habitat conditions in the surrounding natural land with a bioeconomic model. Our case study is buckwheat, which is produced in the hilly and mountainous region of central Japan and is greatly dependent on diverse fauna for pollination services. We model the mechanism of regime shifts in ecosystems consisting of buckwheat fields and the surrounding natural land with a threshold estimation model. We then find that the forest around the crop fields, which serves as a habitat for wild pollinators, is a determinant of an ecological threshold that causes regime shifts. We calculate the shadow value of resilience provided by forest habitat around a unit of buckwheat field to be $9,796, implying that the total value of resilience in complex natural land amounts to half of the stock price of buckwheat land. This overlooked value gives us useful insights on the sustainable use of ecosystems, including both pollinator-mediated crop fields and habitats for pollinators.

Case presentation
A 40‐year‐old man presented with fever, pus around the glans and foreskin, and difficult catheterization. On physical examination, his urethral meatus was too narrow to insert a catheter. Suprapubic catheterization and 2 weeks of intravenous and topical treatment cured the ulcer of the glans. However, after restarting catheterization, the ulcer of the glans relapsed, and the patient’s urethral meatus was completely closed. Circumcision and incision of the meatus were performed, and antibiotics were administered. Unexpectedly, restarting catheterization caused recurrent balanoposthitis. Close inquiry revealed that the patient was using a 10% benzalkonium chloride soaking solution for a reusable catheter, which was a toxic concentration.
Conclusion
The disinfectant concentration should be confirmed when refractory balanoposthitis is encountered in patients who require catheterization.
Although the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services has revealed that the development of scenarios is crucial for helping decision makers identify the potential impact of ...different policy options, there is a lack of reported scenario approach studies in Asia. A new 5-year research project (PANCES) has been developed for predicting and assessing the natural capital and ecosystem services in Japan using an integrated social–ecological system approach via the participation of 15 research institutions and more than 100 researchers. PANCES conducts the development of national-scale future scenarios for exploring potential changes in natural capital and ecosystem services, as well as human well-being, up to 2050 using key direct and indirect drivers including climate change, depopulation, and super-aging, as well as globalization and technological innovation. The Delphi method is employed to generate key drivers that determine different future pathways. Based on the two drivers for scenario axes identified by the Delphi survey and extensive discussion with project members and policy makers, four future scenarios are created, “Natural capital-based compact society”, “Natural capital-based dispersed society”, “Produced capital-based compact society”, and “Produced capital-based dispersed society”, respectively, in addition to the business-as-usual scenario. This study describes a novel approach for collectively designing national-scale future scenarios with qualitative storylines and a visual illustration of the developed scenarios in Japan.
Abstract Claudins (CL) are a family of tetra-transmembrane proteins that are the structural and functional components of tight junctions (TJ). CLs are promising targets for drug development because ...of their role in mucosal drug absorption and cancer. However, CL-targeted drug development has been delayed because CLs have low antigenicity and preparing CL proteins is difficult. We developed a CL binder by using the C-terminal fragment of Clostridium perfringens enterotoxin (C-CPE) and a baculoviral display system. After screening CL binders from a C-CPE mutant-displaying library by using CL-displaying budded baculovirus (BV) we isolated a C-CPE mutant called m19, which bound to CL1, CL2, CL4 and CL5. A 3-dimensional analysis showed that m19 has a structural backbone similar to C-CPE. The charge density of the CL-binding domains of m19 and C-CPE differed, suggesting that electrostatic interactions may occur between m19 and CLs. Treatment of epithelial cells with m19 decreased the paracellular but not transcellular integrity, and m19 enhanced jejunal absorption. Thus, we successfully created a CL binder with broad specificity. These findings will contribute to future preparation of CL binders for CL-targeted drug development.
This article examines the thermal power generation efficiency of ten Japanese electric power companies and the shadow prices of carbon dioxide (CO
2
) by employing a directional output distance ...function (DODF) with panel data for 1990–2011. We find that the shadow price of CO
2
varies greatly between US$1.49 and US$288.82, depending on the company’s production strategy concerning energy supply and CO
2
emissions. These shadow prices give us clues to understand how the electric power companies may respond to environmental regulations, such as environmental tax and emission trading systems. According to the DODF, an additional 53571 GWh of electricity could have been generated in 2011 at the cost of an increase of 40105 thousand tonnes of CO
2
, if the companies would have operated efficiently giving little consideration to CO
2
emissions reduction. These increases are equivalent to 8.77 and 9.18 % of total electricity and CO
2
emissions, respectively, from the ten electric power companies in 2011. On the other hand, if the companies would have operated efficiently and given first priority to CO
2
emissions reduction, a further 58002 thousand tonnes of CO
2
, equivalent to 13.28 % of their total CO
2
emissions in 2011, could have been reduced as a whole.
In the south basin of Lake Biwa, Shiga, Japan, overgrown aquatic weeds (submerged macrophytes) impede cruising boats and cause unpleasant odors and undesirable waste when washed ashore. To address ...this socio-ecological problem, Shiga Prefectural Government implemented a public program to remove overgrown weeds and compost them ashore to conserve the lake environment, while coastal inhabitants and occasional volunteers remove weeds from the beaches to maintain the quality of the living environment. However, these effects are limited because of disjointed social networks. We applied an adaptive and abductive approach to develop community capability to jointly address this problem by sharing academic knowledge with local actors and empowering them. The initial multifaceted reviews, including interviews and postal questionnaire surveys, revealed that the agro-economic value of composted weeds declined in historical and socio-psychological contexts and that most of the unengaged public relied on local governments to address environmental problems. These findings were synthesized and assessed with workshop participants, including local inhabitants, governmental agents, businesspeople, social entrepreneurs, and research experts, to unearth the best solution. The workshops resulted in the development of an e-point system, called
Biwa Point
, to promote and acknowledge voluntary environmental conservation activities, including beach cleaning. It may contribute to enhancing the socio-ecological capability of communities. Additionally, ethical issues, such as publication of inconvenient truths, undesired interpretation by the researchers, and social constraints in research methods, arose through our research practice.
Trade‐off conflicts among the Sustainable Development Goals have been a challenge. To reconcile frictional relationships among food production security (Goal 2), water use efficiency (Goal 6), and ...climate change mitigation (Goal 13), an empirical examination using deterministic frontier analysis was conducted globally. A single volume‐based index for each goal is too simple to evaluate the agricultural sustainability of different areas from the nexus assessment perspective. Our major findings are threefold. First, approximately two‐thirds of African countries have suffered from small food production and excess water use. Second, marked contrasts are observed in the possibilities of an increase in food production and reduction in water use and CO2 emissions among regions. Asian countries use water efficiently, whereas countries in the western regions control CO2 emissions. Third, trade‐offs among food production, water use, and CO2 emissions in agriculture are observed. It is almost impossible to reduce water use in Asia and CO2 emissions in the western regions for food production security. Based on the nexus approach, local strategies need to be compatible with global sustainability. Future research should identify the factors that determine the agricultural efficiency to devise local strategies, and develop policies simultaneously pursuing relevant environmental and well‐being goals.
In Japan, fishers plant trees in upstream watersheds, known as “fishery forests,” to improve coastal environments and secure fishery production. Based on observation and experience, fishers have ...traditionally believed that their practices are fit for their intended purpose. Fishers have found it difficult to continue their practices due to budget constraints caused by a recent decline in coastal fisheries. As such, they are currently faced with the dilemma of deciding whether to restore watershed forests to improve the coastal environments or minimize expenses in an effort to secure financial sustainability. This draws attention to further issues: whether or not fishers can obtain a net return on their efforts, and if so—when. To this end, we examine the economic value of the traditional ecological knowledge using data of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems in Hiroshima, Japan. The results show that, while fishery forests mostly pay their costs in the long run, the costs are higher than the benefits for the first several years because of the initial costs of afforestation. With the aim of contributing to holistic watershed management, we propose policy instruments that could be employed to alleviate front-loaded costs so that fishers can engage in traditional ecological knowledge-based practices.
