At high latitudes and altitudes one of the main controls on hydrological and biogeochemical processes is the breakup and freeze-up of lake and river ice. This study uses 3510 time series from across ...678 Northern Hemisphere lakes and rivers to explore historical patterns in lake and river ice phenology across five overlapping time periods (1931–1960, 1946–1975, 1961–1990, 1976–2005, and 1931–2005). These time series show that the number of annual open-water days increased by 0.63 d per decade from 1931–2005 across the Northern Hemisphere, with trends for breakup and, to a lesser extent, freeze-up closely correlating with regionally averaged temperature. Breakup and freeze-up trends display a spatiotemporally complex evolution and reveal considerable caveats with interpreting the implications of ice phenology changes at lake and river sites that may only have breakup or freeze-up data, rather than both. These results provide an important contribution by showing regional variation in ice phenology trends through time that can be hidden by longer-term trends. The overlapping 30-year time periods also show evidence for an acceleration in warming trends through time. Understanding the changes on both long- and short-term timescales will be important for determining the causes of this change, the underlying biogeochemical processes associated with it, and the wider climatological significance as global temperatures rise.
Purpose
Intraoperative molecular imaging (IMI) is an emerging technology used to locate pulmonary adenocarcinomas and identify positive margins during surgery. Background noise and tissue ...autofluorescence have been major obstacles. The goal of this study is to optimize the image quality of folate receptor alpha (FRα) targeted IMI for pulmonary adenocarcinomas by modifying emission data.
Procedures
A total of 15 lung cancer patients were enrolled in a pilot study. In the first cohort, FRα upregulation within pulmonary adenocarcinoma tumors was confirmed by analyzing specimens from five pulmonary adenocarcinoma patients with flow cytometry and immunohistochemistry. Next, in a cohort of five additional patients, autofluorescence of intrathoracic structures and tissues was quantified. Lastly, five patients with tumors at various depths from the pleural surface were enrolled and received the FRα-targeted optical contrast agent, EC17. In this final cohort, resected pulmonary adenocarcinomas were imaged at a wide range of fluorescence exposure times (0 to 200 ms), various laser powers, and with unique filter configurations. Tumor-to-noise ratio (TNR) for images was generated using region of interest software.
Results
Pulmonary adenocarcinomas highly express FRα. Significant autofluorescence from native thoracic tissues was found with the highest fluorescent signals at the bronchial stump (547 ± 98, range 423–699), the pulmonary artery (267 ± 64, range 200–374), and cortical bone (266 ± 17, range 243–287). High levels of autofluorescence were appreciated after systemic administration of EC17; however, TNR was improved by altering exposure settings at the time of the imaging. Optimal fluorescent exposure time occurs at 40 ms (25 frames/s).
Conclusions
Exposure properties can be manipulated to maximize TNR thus allowing for successful intraoperative detection of pulmonary adenocarcinomas during surgery. Optimization of the conditions for intraoperative molecular imaging sets the stage for future clinical trials utilizing targeted IMI techniques which can aid the surgeon at the time of cancer resection.

Here, we review the existing preclinical and clinical data on IFI in thoracic surgery.
Upscaling Carbon Capture and Storage requires identification of suitable storage sites, with robust reservoir seals. The Utsira Formation in the northern North Sea has been flagged as a target for ...further storage. However, there are no regional studies of seal variability addressing heterogeneities that could facilitate seal bypass. This study aims to: (a) identify, assess and map the elements that promote or restrict fluid migration, (b) develop a matrix to regionally map containment confidence (CC) and (c) rank the different areas for CO2 containment across the Utsira Formation. The seal and overburden were mapped using a high‐resolution, pre‐stack depth‐migrated 3D broadband seismic reflection dataset and 141 exploration wells. Seal geometry, sandstone presence and sandstone connectivity in the seal and overburden were assigned relative CC scores, which were summed to map overall CC of the Utsira Fm. Indicators for shallow gas and migration were mapped and correlated with the other elements. Areas with the lowest CC are in the west of the Utsira Fm. Here, sandstones within the Seal Interval are connected through the overburden via sandy submarine fans. In the southeast, dipping stratigraphy downlaps onto the Utsira Fm., increasing the potential for connection with glacially‐derived channel‐lobe systems in the overburden. The areas with the highest CC are the central and northeast parts of the Utsira Fm., where the Seal Interval is mudstone‐dominated and parallel to the reservoir, and channel‐lobe systems identified in the Overburden Interval are disconnected from the reservoir. This area coincides with a thick depocentre of the northern Utsira Fm. These results can be used to inform CO2 storage site selection and constrain future CO2 plume simulation analyses for the Utsira Fm. The CC matrix outlined here can also be adapted and applied to regionally assess the containment of other potential CO2 storage reservoirs in any setting.

Reconstructing past ocean-climate environments and heat transport requires proxies from which these conditions can be quantified. This is particularly important for the evaluation of numerical ...palaeoclimate models. Here we present new evidence for a reduced North Atlantic Current (NAC) at the termination of the third last glacial, for which palaeocurrent information was previously unavailable. This is based on an exquisitely preserved set of buried iceberg scours seen in three-dimensional seismic reflection images from the mid-Norwegian slope. The scours were formed ∼430 ka during the transition from glacial to interglacial conditions. The spiral geometry of the scours suggests that they were carved by grounded icebergs influenced by tidal and geostrophic ocean currents. Using the ratio between the estimated tidal and geostrophic current velocities and comparing them with velocities from the Last Glacial Maximum and the present, we show that the stage 12 NAC velocities may have been ∼50% slower than the present.
To determine if intraoperative near-infrared (NIR) imaging carries benefit in resection of pancreatic neoplasms.
Resection of pancreatic malignancies is hindered by high rates of local and distant ...recurrence from positive margins and unrecognized metastases. Improved tumor visualization could improve outcomes. We hypothesized that intraoperative NIR imaging with a clinically approved optical contrast agent could serve as a useful adjunct in assessing margins and extent of disease during pancreatic resections.
Twenty patients were enrolled in an open-label clinical trial from July 2016 to May 2018. Subjects received second window indocyanine green (ICG) (2.5-5 mg/kg) 24 hours prior to pancreatic resection. NIR imaging was performed during staging laparoscopy and after pancreas mobilization in situ and following resection ex vivo. Tumor fluorescence was quantified using tumor-to-background ratio (TBR). Fluorescence at the specimen margin was compared to pathology evaluation.
Procedures included 9 pancreaticoduodenectomies, 10 distal pancreatectomies, and 1 total pancreatectomy; 21 total specimens were obtained. Three out of 8 noninvasive tumors were fluorescent (mean TBR 2.59 ± 2.57). Twelve out of 13 invasive malignancies (n = 12 pancreatic adenocarcinoma, n = 1 cholangiocarcinoma) were fluorescent (mean TBR 4.42 ± 2.91). Fluorescence at the transection margin correlated with final pathologic assessment in 12 of 13 patients. Following neoadjuvant therapy, 4 of 5 tumors were fluorescent; these 4 tumors showed no treatment response on pathology assessment. One tumor had a significant treatment response and showed no fluorescence.
Second window ICG reliably accumulates in invasive pancreatic malignancies and provides real-time feedback during pancreatectomy. NIR imaging may help to assess the response to neoadjuvant therapy.

Twenty subjects with biopsy-proven pulmonary adenocarcinomas were enrolled in a phase I clinical trial to test the safety and feasibility of OTL38, a novel folate receptor-α (FRα) targeted optical contrast agent. During resection, tumors were imaged in situ and ex vivo and fluorescence was quantified. Resected specimens were analyzed to confirm diagnosis, and immunohistochemistry was utilized to quantify FRα expression. A multivariate analysis using clinical and tumor data was performed to determine variables impacting tumor fluorescence.
Of the 20 subjects, three grade I adverse events were observed: all transient nausea/abdominal pain. All symptoms resolved after completing the infusion. Sixteen of 20 subjects (80%) had tumors with in situ fluorescence with a mean tumor-to-background fluorescence level of 2.9 (interquartile range, 2.1 to 4.2). The remaining 4 subjects' tumors fluoresced ex vivo. In situ fluorescence was dependent on depth from the pleural surface. Four subcentimeter nodules not identified on preoperative imaging were detected with intraoperative imaging.
This phase I trial provides preliminary evidence suggesting that folate receptor-targeted molecular imaging with OTL38 is safe, with tolerable grade I toxicity. These data also suggest that OTL38 accumulates in known lung cancers and may improve identification of synchronous malignancies. Our group is initiating a five-center, phase II study to better understand the clinical implications of intraoperative molecular imaging using OTL38.
Directly observing glacial drainage systems (englacial and subglacial) is challenging. The distribution, morphology and internal structure of eskers can provide valuable information about the glacial ...drainage system and meltwater processes. This work presents the annual evolution (meltout) and internal structure of an esker emerging from the Breiðamerkurjökull ice margin, southeast Iceland. Changes in esker morphology have been repeatedly mapped over a 1‐year period using high temporal and spatial resolution data acquired by an uncrewed aerial vehicle (UAV). The internal architecture of the esker was investigated using ground‐penetrating radar (GPR) surveys. These data are used to identify the dominant processes driving the formation of this englacial esker and to evaluate the preservation potential. The englacial esker was up to 2.6 m thick and ice‐cored. A large moulin upglacier of the esker, which evolved into an englacial conduit, supplied meltwater to the englacial channel. Upglacier dipping debris‐filled basal hydrofractures, formed by pressurised subglacial meltwater rising up the retrograde bed slope, likely supplied sediment to the englacial conduit. Over the 1‐year period of observation the crest morphology evolved from flat‐ to sharp‐crested and the esker footprint increased by a factor of 5.7 in response to post‐depositional processes. The findings presented here indicate that englacial eskers may have low preservation potential due to post‐depositional reworking such as slumping through ice‐core meltout and erosion by later meltwater flow. As englacial eskers may not be preserved in the landscape, they could represent important glacial drainage system components that are not currently captured in palaeo‐ice sheet reconstructions. This work highlights the value of creating a time series of high‐temporal resolution data to quantify morphological evolution and improve glacial process‐form models.
The morphological evolution of an englacial esker was examined using UAV‐generated and GPR data. Sediment was likely supplied via debris‐filled basal hydrofractures with meltwater supplied via a large moulin. Englacial eskers may have poor preservation potential due to post‐depositional reworking and meltwater erosion.
