Multifrequency Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) observations were performed to study the radio morphology and synchrotron spectra of four high-frequency peaking radio sources. They are resolved into ...several compact components and the radio emission is dominated by hotspots/lobes. The core region is detected unambiguously in J1335+5844 and J1735+5049. The spectra of the main source components peak above 3 GHz. Assuming that the spectral peak is produced by synchrotron self-absorption, we estimate the magnetic field directly from observable quantities: in half of the components it agrees with the equipartition field, while in the others the difference exceeds an order of magnitude. By comparing the physical properties of the targets with those of larger objects, we found that the luminosity increases with linear size for sources smaller than a few kpc, while it decreases for larger objects. The asymmetric sources J1335+5844 and J1735+5049 suggest that the ambient medium is inhomogeneous and is able to influence the evolution of the radio emission even during its first stages. The core luminosity increases with linear size for sources up to a few kpc, while it seems constant for larger sources, suggesting an evolution independent of source total luminosity.
ABSTRACT
We report results on multiepoch Very Large Array (VLA) and pc-scale Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) observations of candidate compact symmetric objects (CSOs) from the faint sample of ...high-frequency peakers. New VLBA observations could resolve the radio structure in about 42 per cent of the observed sources, showing double components that may be either mini-lobes or core-jet structures. Almost all the sources monitored by the VLA show some variability on time-scale of a decade, and only one source does not show any significant variation. In 17 sources, the flux density changes randomly as it is expected in blazars, and in four sources the spectrum becomes flat in the last observing epoch, confirming that samples selected in the GHz regime are highly contaminated by beamed objects. In 16 objects, the pc-scale and variability properties are consistent with a young radio source in adiabatic expansion, with a steady decrease of the flux density in the optically thin part of the spectrum, and a flux density increase in the optically thick part. For these sources, we estimate dynamical ages between a few tens to a few hundred years. The corresponding expansion velocity is generally between 0.1c and 0.7c, similar to values found in CSOs with different approaches. The fast evolution that we observe in some CSO candidates suggests that not all the objects would become classical Fanaroff–Riley radio sources.
ABSTRACT
According to radiative models, radio galaxies and quasars are predicted to produce gamma rays from the earliest stages of their evolution. Exploring their high-energy emission is crucial for ...providing information on the most energetic processes, the origin and the structure of the newly born radio jets. Taking advantage of more than 11 yr of Fermi-LAT data, we investigate the gamma-ray emission of 162 young radio sources (103 galaxies and 59 quasars), the largest sample of young radio sources used so far for such a gamma-ray study. We separately analyse each source and perform the first stacking analysis of this class of sources to investigate the gamma-ray emission of the undetected sources. We detect significant gamma-ray emission from 11 young radio sources, 4 galaxies, and 7 quasars, including the discovery of significant gamma-ray emission from the compact radio galaxy PKS 1007+142 (z = 0.213). The cumulative signal of below-threshold young radio sources is not significantly detected. However, it is about one order of magnitude lower than those derived from the individual sources, providing stringent upper limits on the gamma-ray emission from young radio galaxies (Fγ < 4.6 × 10−11 ph cm−2 s−1) and quasars (Fγ < 10.1 × 10−11 ph cm−2 s−1), and enabling a comparison with the models proposed. With this analysis of more than a decade of Fermi-LAT observations, we can conclude that while individual young radio sources can be bright gamma-ray emitters, the collective gamma-ray emission of this class of sources is not bright enough to be detected by Fermi-LAT.

Very Large Array and the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) of the blazar PSO J030947.49+271757.31 ...(hereafter PSO J0309+27) at
z
= 6.10 ± 0.03. The milliarcsecond angular resolution of our VLBA observations at 1.5, 5, and 8.4 GHz unveils a bright one-sided jet extended for ∼500 parsecs in projection. This high-
z
radio-loud active galactic nucleus is resolved into multiple compact sub-components that are embedded in a more diffuse and faint radio emission that enshrouds them in a continuous jet structure. We directly derive limits on some physical parameters from observable quantities such as viewing angle and Lorentz and Doppler factors. If PSO J0309+27 is a genuine blazar, as suggested by its X-ray properties, then we find that its bulk Lorentz factor must be relatively low (lower than 5). This value would be in favour of a scenario currently proposed to reconcile the paucity of high-
z
blazars with current predictions. Nevertheless, we cannot exclude that PSO J0309+27 is seen under a larger viewing angle, which would imply that the X-ray emission must be enhanced, for example, by inverse Compton scattering with the cosmic microwave background. More stringent constraints on the bulk Lorentz factor in PSO J0309+27 and on these factors in the other high-
z
blazars are necessary to test whether their properties are intrinsically different from those of the low-
z
blazar population.

23 from the radio position of the NLSy1. Analysing 76 months of γ-ray data (2008 August 4–2014 December 31) we are able to better constrain the localization of the γ-ray source. The new position of the γ-ray source is 0
$_{.}^{\circ}$
05 from FBQS J1644+2619, suggesting a spatial association with the NLSy1. This is the sixth NLSy1 detected at high significance by Fermi-LAT so far. Notably, a significant increase of activity was observed in γ-rays from FBQS J1644+2619 during 2012 July–October, and an increase of activity in the V band was detected by the Catalina Real-Time Sky Survey in the same period.
We present a study of the sub-parsec scale radio structure of the radio galaxy 3C 84/NGC 1275 based on the Very Long Baseline Array data at 43 GHz. We discover a limb brightening in the "restarted" ...jet that is associated with the 2005 radio outburst. In the 1990s, the jet structure was ridge brightening rather than limb brightening, despite the observations being done with similar angular resolutions. This indicates that the transverse jet structure has recently changed. This change in the morphology reveals an interesting agreement with the gamma -ray flux increase, i.e., the gamma -ray flux in the 1990s was at least seven times lower than the current one. One plausible explanation for the limb brightening is that the velocity structure of the jet is in the context of the stratified jet, which is a successful scenario that explains the gamma -ray emission in some active galactic nuclei. If this is the case, then the change in apparent transverse structure might be caused by the change in the transverse velocity structure. We argue that the transition from ridge brightening to limb brightening is related to the gamma -ray time variability on the timescale of decades. We also discuss the collimation profile of the jet.
ABSTRACT
We present results on global very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations at 327 MHz of 18 compact steep-spectrum (CSS) and GHz-peaked spectrum (GPS) radio sources from the 3C and ...the Peacock & Wall catalogues. About 80 per cent of the sources have a ‘double/triple’ structure. The radio emission at 327 MHz is dominated by steep-spectrum extended structures, while compact regions become predominant at higher frequencies. As a consequence, we could unambiguously detect the core region only in three sources, likely due to self-absorption affecting its emission at this low frequency. Despite their low surface brightness, lobes store the majority of the source energy budget, whose correct estimate is a key ingredient in tackling the radio source evolution. Low-frequency VLBI observations able to disentangle the lobe emission from that of other regions are therefore the best way to infer the energetics of these objects. Dynamical ages estimated from energy budget arguments provide values between 2 × 103 and 5 × 104 yr, in agreement with the radiative ages estimated from the fit of the integrated synchrotron spectrum, further supporting the youth of these objects. A discrepancy between radiative and dynamical ages is observed in a few sources where the integrated spectrum is dominated by hotspots. In this case the radiative age likely represents the time spent by the particles in these regions, rather than the source age.
Context.
According to radiative models, radio galaxies may produce
γ
-ray emission from the first stages of their evolution. However, very few such galaxies have been detected by the
Fermi
Large Area ...Telescope (LAT) so far.
Aims.
NGC 3894 is a nearby (
z
= 0.0108) object that belongs to the class of compact symmetric objects (CSOs, i.e., the most compact and youngest radio galaxies), which is associated with a
γ
-ray counterpart in the Fourth
Fermi
-LAT source catalog. Here we present a study of the source in the
γ
-ray and radio bands aimed at investigating its high-energy emission and assess its young nature.
Methods.
We analyzed 10.8 years of
Fermi
-LAT data between 100 MeV and 300 GeV and determined the spectral and variability characteristics of the source. Multi-epoch very long baseline array (VLBA) observations between 5 and 15 GHz over a period of 35years were used to study the radio morphology of NGC 3894 and its evolution.
Results.
NGC 3894 is detected in
γ
-rays with a significance >9
σ
over the full period, and no significant variability has been observed in the
γ
-ray flux on a yearly time-scale. The spectrum is modeled with a flat power law (Γ = 2.0 ± 0.1) and a flux on the order of 2.2 × 10
−9
ph cm
−2
s
−1
. For the first time, the VLBA data allow us to constrain with high precision the apparent velocity of the jet and counter-jet side to be
β
app, NW
= 0.132 ± 0.004 and
β
app, SE
= 0.065 ± 0.003, respectively.
Conclusions.
Fermi
-LAT and VLBA results favor the youth scenario for the inner structure of this object, with an estimated dynamical age of 59 ± 5 years. The estimated range of viewing angle (10° <
θ
< 21°) does not exclude a possible jet-like origin of the
γ
-ray emission.
