This paper summarizes the results of a two-day dynamic monitoring of Michelangelo's David subject to environmental loads (city traffic and pedestrian loading induced by tourists visiting the ...Accademia Gallery). The monitoring was carried out by a no-contact technique using an interferometric radar, whose effectiveness in measuring the resonant frequencies of structures and historic monuments has proved over the last years through numerous monitoring activities. Owing to the dynamic behavior of the measurement system (radar and tripod), an accelerometer has been installed on the radar head to filter out the movement component of the measuring instrument from the measurement of the David's displacement. Measurements were carried out in the presence and absence of visitors, to assess their influence on the dynamic behavior of the statue. A numerical model of the statue was employed to evaluate the experimental results.
Design of A CW-SF Ground Penetrating Radar Pieraccini, Massimiliano; Papi, Federico

Most of Ground Penetrating Radars (GPR) are pulsed system, nevertheless there are a number of applications for which Continuous Wave Step Frequency (CWSF) radar can be advantageous. Generally ...speaking, CWSF systems are more complex then pulse radar, but they can manage larger bandwidth, have larger time efficiency and better control of the band. Furthermore, power, integration time and step of each single frequency can be controlled. In this paper the authors, that work in the CWSF field since several years, are aimed to give some guidelines and a practical example of CWSF designing.

The aim of this work is to design and test a small size and low-cost Doppler disdrometer operating in X-band, able to be integrated in a large scale geographic network. The microwave front-end is ...based on low cost patch antennas instead of horns, and integrated mixer and amplifier instead a separated electronics. Tests using a controlled drop dispenser and in-field measurements demonstrated the effectiveness of this solution.
In this paper the authors present an ultra high resolution and high dynamic range stepped frequency continuous wave radar for masonry investigations. The radar architecture is based on a couple of ...VCO in a PLL loop and a low noise receiver. This approach is able to cover with 801 steps the 4-8 GHz frequency range obtaining a theoretical range resolution of 37.5 mm in air and a dynamic range higher than 110 dB. The system has also a set of horizontal and vertical antennas to provide a complete polarization matrix of the investigated surface. Moreover the radar is completed with a 2 dimensional and fully automatic scanning system.

In this paper a rotating antenna GB-SAR, that we named RotoSAR, is proposed and tested. The radar head is fixed at a rotating arm and the antennas are aimed in direction orthogonal to the rotation ...plane. Potential and limits of this configuration is studied, with simulations and in-field measurements, with particular regard to imagery performances.
L-C trapped dipole has been a popular dual-band antenna for several decades. Its basic operating principle relies on a couple of parallel resonant circuits that cut-off a part of the dipole branches ...at a specific design frequency. In this paper a double-frequency (series and parallel) resonant circuit has been designed to operate as a trap and it has been experimentally tested. The advantage of this solution is that it makes the antenna input impedance more uniform in the sub-bands, improving its matching performances.

In this paper a rotating antenna GB-SAR, that we named RotoSAR, has been proposed and tested. The radar head is fixed at a rotating arm and the antennas are aimed in direction orthogonal to the ...rotation plane. The obtained results both in simulation and in-field tests, show that imagery quality performances are comparable to the linear SAR. On the other hand, the proposed approach is potentially much more faster than conventional Ground Based linear SAR.
Within the RiSEM project (Seismic Risk of Monumental Building) two different kinds of GPR measurements were performed. The first one was carried out by using an ultra dynamic range - ultra high ...resolution GPR in order to investigate the presence of hypogeal structures under the "Piazza della Cisterna" (Cistern Square). The second one was carried out by using a non contact 4-8 GHz GPR system specifically design for masonry investigations. In this case the measurement was performed on one of the bearing walls of "Torre Grossa" (Big Tower).
