A checklist of the family Trombiculidae and Leeuwenhoekiidae is presented, containing 63 species in 30 genera of chiggers from 80 different hosts and 146 localities in Brazil. The type locality and ...depository are provided, including new locality and host records for the country.
The family Spinturnicidae (Oudemans, 1902) comprises hematophagous mites found exclusively on bats. In this article, we present DNA barcodes (mitochondrial Cytochrome c Oxidase I) for 71 specimens ...morphologically assigned to six spinturnicid species from 34 bat specimens (11 species) obtained from 10 caves and one forest fragment in karst areas from Minas Gerais state, southeast Brazil. A visual guide with diagnostic characters for Periglischrus acutisternus Machado-Allison, 1964, P. caligus Kolenati, 1857, P. herrerai Machado-Allison, 1965, P. iheringi Oudemans, 1902, P. paravargasi Herrin and Tipton, 1975, P. torrealbai Machado-Allison, 1965 is provided. Along DNA barcode data, photo-documentation of vouchering material of each individual sequenced have been deposited at BOLD (Barcoding of Life Data System v4) database. Periglischrus herrerai, P. caligus and P. paravargasi are reported for the first time in Minas Gerais state, extending their distribution ranges.
The life cycle of Parasitengona includes major morphological changes precluding an instar association based only on the morphology. This makes rearing and/or molecular data necessary to associate the ...heteromorphic instars. Most of the described species are known from either post larval instars or larva. Following a previous study on Palearctic Erythraeidae, in the present study the instar association was made through an integrative approach including rearing trials and molecular analysis of the cytochrome oxidase I (COI) gene with the Bayesian Generalized Mixed Yule Coalescent (bGMYC) algorithm for species delimitation. Two new cave dwelling Erythraeidae (Trombidiformes: Parasitengona) species are described Lasioerythraeus jessicae sp. nov. and Leptus sidorchukae sp. nov. including all active instars. Additionally, a complete description of the previously unknown adults of Charletonia rocciai Treat Flechtmann, 1979 is provided with notes on the larva and deutonymph. We also demonstrate experimentally that Ch. rocciai larvae are not attached to the same individual host during the entire feeding stage. We discuss the presence of troglomorphisms in Le. sidorchukae sp. nov.; and the distribution of the species.
Two Limnohalacarus species are reported from the southern Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul, Limnohalacarus cultellatus Viets, 1940 and L. mamillatus Fain & Lambrechts, 1987, originally described ...on the basis of individuals from the Caribbean region and aquaria in Belgium, respectively. The former species is also known from Madagascar, Hungary, North America, and was referred to Brazil and El Salvador in the literature. The latter species is also known from Western Australia.
Two species of mites belonging to the genus Whartonia Ewing, 1944, family Leeuwenhoekiidae (Womersley, 1944), were obtained from Carollia perspicillata (Linnaeus, 1758) bats from mine tunnels in the ...municipalities of São José da Safira and Medina, Brazil: W. (W). pachywhartoni Vercammen-Grandjean, 1966 and W. (W.) nudosetosa Wharton, 1938. A table with all Whartonia (Whartonia) species and their respective morphological characters is presented.
This study aimed to assess the phylogenetic position of the order Acariformes, describe the sperm cell morphology, accompanying secretions and spermiogenesis of halacarid mites. Eventually, it was also intended to describe a new species and occurrences along the São Paulo State coastline. The phylogenetic position of Acariformes mites is examined employing SSU, partial LSU sequences, and the morphology of 91 extant terminals. The hypotheses regarded as better encompassing the evidence gathered is that yielded by the combined analysis of morphology and partially aligned sequences using the secondary structure as a guide to the alignment. It has yielded to a topology including a clade composed by (Palpigradi (Solfugae Acariformes) and other by (Ricinulei Tetrapulmonata). The seeming stability of certain clades not recovered here, as Haplocnemata and Acari, are regarded as the byproduct of the way as molecular homology was established by the instrumentalist approach implemented in POY inprevious studies. Ultrastructural observations on spermiogenesis, sperm cell and reproductive system of sixteen species belonging to Halacaridae are presented. The espermatological information supports a basal position for genus Rhombognathus, which presents a diphuse pattern of chromatin condensation and crested mitochondria, instead of the derivate centripetal pattern and annular mitochondria observed in the remaining clades, data also support a close relationship between the genus Arhodeoporus and Copidognathinae and sister group relationship between the genera Halacarus and Thalassarachna. Finally, the genus Halacaroides is recorded from the Brazilian coastline for the first time.
