Skin, our first interface to the external environment, is subjected to oxidative stress caused by a variety of factors such as solar ultraviolet, infrared and visible light, environmental pollution, ...including ozone and particulate matters, and psychological stress. Excessive reactive species, including reactive oxygen species and reactive nitrogen species, exacerbate skin pigmentation and aging, which further lead to skin tone unevenness, pigmentary disorder, skin roughness and wrinkles. Besides these, skin microbiota are also a very important factor ensuring the proper functions of skin. While environmental factors such as UV and pollutants impact skin microbiota compositions, skin dysbiosis results in various skin conditions. In this review, we summarize the generation of oxidative stress from exogenous and endogenous sources. We further introduce current knowledge on the possible roles of oxidative stress in skin pigmentation and aging, specifically with emphasis on oxidative stress and skin pigmentation. Meanwhile, we summarize the science and rationale of using three well‐known antioxidants, namely vitamin C, resveratrol and ferulic acid, in the treatment of hyperpigmentation. Finally, we discuss the strategy for preventing oxidative stress‐induced skin pigmentation and aging.
To construct a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) signature for predicting hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) prognosis with high efficiency.
Differentially expressed lncRNAs (DELs) between HCC specimens and ...peritumor liver specimens were identified using the edgeR package to analyze The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) LIHC dataset. Univariate Cox proportional hazards regression was performed to obtain the DELs significantly associated with overall survival (OS) in a training set. These OS-related DELs were further analyzed using a stepwise multivariate Cox regression model. Those lncRNAs fitted in the multivariate Cox regression model and independently associated with overall survival were chosen to build a prognostic risk formula. The prognostic value of this formula was then validated in the test group and the entire cohort and further compared with two previously identified prognostic signatures for HCC. Gene ontology and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathway analyses were performed to explore the potential biological functions of the lncRNAs in the signature.
Based on lncRNA expression profiling of 370 HCC patients from the TCGA database, we constructed a 5-lncRNA signature (AC015908.3, AC091057.3, TMCC1-AS1, DCST1-AS1 and FOXD2-AS1) that was significantly associated with prognosis. HCC patients with high-risk scores based on the expression of the 5 lncRNAs had significantly shorter survival times compared to patients with low-risk scores in both the training and test groups. Multivariate Cox regression analysis demonstrated that the prognostic value of the 5 lncRNAs was independent of clinicopathological parameters. A comparison study involving two previously identified prognostic signatures for HCC demonstrated that this 5-lncRNA signature showed improved prognostic power compared with the other two signatures. Functional enrichment analysis indicated that the 5 lncRNAs were potentially involved in metabolic processes, fibrinolysis and complement activation.
Our present study constructed a 5-lncRNA signature that improves survival prediction and can be used as a prognostic biomarker for HCC patients.
Du Fengzhi, a county magistrate in Guangdong province in the late Qing dynasty, recorded hundreds of legal cases in his diary. In addition to the details of cases and the process of dealing, he also ...recorded his own observations, doubts, analyses, judgments and deliberations. The diary reflected not only how he dealt with cases, but also the reasons for his decisions. From the diary, we know that Du's actual judicial power far exceeded the provisions of the Qing law. However, the judicial resources he possessed and the political and social reality he faced often made it difficult for him to deal with legal cases abiding by the statute law, and in many cases the truth could not even be found at all. Therefore, he often ignored the evidence of the case and dealt with them in violation of law. His first consideration was to maintain his position in the officialdom, safeguard his own economic interests and reduce trouble. He also paid attention to the unwritten rules of officialdom and the comments of local gentries. In some cases, he showed his compassion for the poor, orphans and the widowed as well. This article discusses two cases in detail to reflect Du's various deliberations in dealing with legal cases.
Multimodal signals are powerful for emotion recognition since they can represent emotions comprehensively. In this article, we compare the recognition performance and robustness of two multimodal ...emotion recognition models: 1) deep canonical correlation analysis (DCCA) and 2) bimodal deep autoencoder (BDAE). The contributions of this article are threefold: 1) we propose two methods for extending the original DCCA model for multimodal fusion: a) weighted sum fusion and b) attention-based fusion; 2) we systemically compare the performance of DCCA, BDAE, and traditional approaches on five multimodal data sets; and 3) we investigate the robustness of DCCA, BDAE, and traditional approaches on SEED-V and DREAMER data sets under two conditions: 1) adding noises to multimodal features and 2) replacing electroencephalography features with noises. Our experimental results demonstrate that DCCA achieves state-of-the-art recognition results on all five data sets: 1) 94.6% on the SEED data set; 2) 87.5% on the SEED-IV data set; 3) 84.3% and 85.6% on the DEAP data set; 4) 85.3% on the SEED-V data set; and 5) 89.0%, 90.6%, and 90.7% on the DREAMER data set. Meanwhile, DCCA has greater robustness when adding various amounts of noises to the SEED-V and DREAMER data sets. By visualizing features before and after DCCA transformation on the SEED-V data set, we find that the transformed features are more homogeneous and discriminative across emotions.
Three-dimensional (3D) porous conductive composites explored in highly sensitive tactile sensors have attracted extensive close attention in recent years owing to their peculiar porous structure and ...unique physical properties in terms of excellent mechanical flexibility, high relative dielectric permittivity, and good elastic property. Herein, we report an practical, efficient, and macroscopic dip-coating process to manufacture rapid-response, low detection limit, high-sensitivity, and highly sensitive capacitive flexible tactile sensors. The fabrication process, tactile perception mechanism, and sensing performance of the developed devices are comparatively investigated. The homogeneous 3D hybrid network constructed by graphene nanoplatelets/carboxyl-functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes/silicone rubber composites anchored on polyurethane sponge skeletons exhibits a significantly improved dielectric property, resulting in a high-performance capacitive flexible tactile sensor with a fast response time (∼45 ms), an extremely low-pressure detection limit of ∼3 Pa, excellent sensitivity (∼0.062 kPa–1), and excellent durability and stability over 2000 cycles. Importantly, the flexible devices can be used as the wearable electronic skin and successfully mounted on human skin or a soft-bodied robot to achieve the capability of physiological stimuli monitoring, micropressure monitoring, soft grabbing, etc. Our rapid-response, low detection limit, and high-sensitivity capacitive flexible tactile sensor with a novel 3D porous dielectric layer could be a prospective candidate for the wearable applications in real-time and high-accuracy portable healthcare monitoring devices, advanced human–machine interfaces, and intelligent robot perception systems.
Extensive allelic variation in agronomically important genes serves as the basis of rice breeding. Here, we present a comprehensive map of rice quantitative trait nucleotides (QTNs) and inferred QTN ...effects based on eight genome-wide association study cohorts. Population genetic analyses revealed that domestication, local adaptation and heterosis are all associated with QTN allele frequency changes. A genome navigation system, RiceNavi, was developed for QTN pyramiding and breeding route optimization, and implemented in the improvement of a widely cultivated indica variety. This work presents an efficient platform that bridges ever-increasing genomic knowledge and diverse improvement needs in rice.
In recent years, environmental problems have attracted attention at home and abroad, so exploring the causes of environmental pollution has become a research content for scholars. The opening of ...high-speed railway has improved the economic development of China’s Yangtze River Delta, and with the economic growth, the construction of high-speed railway has also led to environmental pollution in China’s Yangtze River Delta. Therefore, using the data from 41 prefecture-level cities in China’s Yangtze River Delta from 2003 to 2020, the SDID model was constructed, and the comprehensive index of environmental pollution was calculated by factor analysis to calculate the impact of high-speed railway construction on environmental pollution in China’s Yangtze River Delta. The conclusions are as follows: The opening of high-speed railway significantly reduces the overall pollution level in China’s Yangtze River Delta. The opening of high-speed rail has played a role in restraining the environmental pollution of the first and second tier cities and the third and fourth tier cities, but the pollution level of the third and fourth tier cities has decreased significantly.
Cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) is a common clinical pathological process, and it is a key step in causing further ischemic organ damage. The mechanism of cerebral IRI is still not fully ...understood, leading to a lack of effective treatment. It has been demonstrated that circular RNAs (circRNAs) can act as miRNA sponges and play an important role in regulating gene expression through a circRNA-miRNA-gene pathway. The specific role of circRNAs in the pathogenesis of cerebral IRI, however, is still unclear. Thus, in the present study, we investigated circRNA expression differences in HT22 cells with oxygen–glucose deprivation/reoxygenation (OGD/R) versus normal controls. The results from circRNA microarrays revealed that 15 circRNAs were significantly altered in the OGD/R model (p < 0.05) compared with the control group. Among them, 3 were significantly up-regulated, and the other 12 were down-regulated. Furthermore, the up-regulated expression of mmu-circRNA-015947 was verified using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). Bioinformatics analysis revealed that up-regulated expression of mmu-circRNA-015947 could interact with miRNAs (mmu-miR-188-3p, mmu-miR-329-5p, mmu-miR-3057-3p, mmu-miR-5098 and mmu-miR-683) and thereby enhance target gene expression. KEGG pathway analysis predicted that mmu-circRNA-015947 may participate in apoptosis-related, metabolism-related and immune-related pathways, which are known to be involved in the pathogenesis of IRI. This research suggests that the overlapping expression of mmu-circRNA-015947 might be involved in the process of cerebral IRI and presents a novel molecular target for clinical therapy.
