The evaluation of patients with suspected appendicitis strives to identify all patients with presenting symptoms while minimizing negative appendectomy rate. The aim of the study was to identify the ...optimal combination of clinical and laboratory parameters that should facilitate the emergency department surgeon's definite decision.
The study group comprised 120 patients with suspicion of acute appendicitis (AA). In 60 patients the AA diagnosis was confirmed intraoperatively and by histological analysis. Clinical parameters included: appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, dysuria, signs of localized peritonitis and pain migration. Measured laboratory parameters were: C-reactive protein (CRP), complete blood count (CBC) and the urine test strip.
The control group of patients were more likely to present following symptoms: no changes in appetite (P < 0.001), diarrhea (P = 0.009) and dysuria (P = 0.047). CRP and white blood cell count (WBC) were significantly higher in the group with confirmed AA compared to the control group (44.7
. 6.6, and 13.6 ± 3.9
. 9.0 ± 3.4, respectively; P < 0.001). The multivariate logistic regression analysis identified lack of appetite (P = 0.013), absence of diarrhea (P = 0.004), and positive finding of signs of localized peritonitis (P = 0.013), as well as WBCs (P < 0.001) and negative urine test strip results (P = 0.009) as statistically significant predictors of AA. The highest percentage of correctly classified cases (82%) was achieved by combination of common clinical exam and basic inexpensive laboratory parameters (WBCs and urine test strip).
Acute appendicitis in the emergency setting may be successfully ruled in based on elevated WBCs and negative urine test strip in combination with signs of localized peritonitis, lack of appetite and absence of diarrhea. Since CRP did not contribute to the overall diagnostic accuracy, its use in AA diagnostic protocols is of no value.

vulnerable, the presence of fungal spores in the facilities of ...preschool and
school institutions should be investigated readily. In order to estimate air
contamination by fungal spores, air sampling was conducted in eight
facilities of the preschool institution in Novi Sad during February and
March, 2007. Sedimentation plate method was used for the detection of viable
fungal spores, mostly being members of subdv. Deuteromycota (Fungi
imperfecti). In 32 samples a total of 148 colonies were developed, among
which five genera were identified: Penicillium, Cladosporium, Aspergillus,
Alternaria and Acremonium while non-sporulating fungal colonies were labeled
as sterile mycelia. Most frequently recorded genera were Penicillium with 46
colonies and Cladosporium with 44 colonies. The genera Aspergillus and
Alternaria were represented with 3 colonies each and Acremonium with only 1
colony. The greatest number of colonies emerged in the samples from the day
care facilities ?Vendi? (58 colonies) and ?Panda? (49 colonies). Most diverse
samples were obtained from the day care center ?Zvoncica?, with presence of
all identified genera. These results showed notable presence of fungal spores
in the indoor air of Preschool institution facilities and indicated the need
for further, more complete seasonal research. Obtained information is
considered useful for the evaluation of potential mycofactors that endanger
health of children.
Aktivno učenje omogućava studentima da tijekom nastave proučavaju sadržaj koji se obrađuje i međusobno komuniciraju o njemu. U isto vrijeme profesor je taj koji osmišljava nastavni sat i sadržaj, te ...usmjerava studente na ostvarivanje ciljeva. Na taj način sprječava se mogućnost da sudionici nastavnog procesa budu pasivni slušatelji, a u isto vrijeme osposobljava ih se za razlčcite pristupe rješavanja problema i razvijanje kritičkog mišljenja. ERR okvir 1 za poučavanje osmišljen je kako bi se poticalo kritičko mišljenje i dubinska obrada informacija u okviru projekta Čitanje i pisanje za kritičko mišljenje. Tijekom akademske godine 2015./2016. na dvije visokoobrazovne institucije u Hrvatskoj vježbe iz financijske matematike održavane su na način da se primjenjuju tehnike iz ERR okvira. Autori u ovom radu prikazuju utječe li promjena metoda rada na uspjeh studenata na završnom ispitu iz kolegija, uspjeh usporeduju s uspjehom prethodne akademske godine i iznose neke od stavova studenata o nastavnom procesu.
