The effectiveness of new shear test methods for evaluating the face-bonding quality of Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) panels was examined by comparing experimental data and numerical modelling. The common characteristic of the specimens was the loading with angle of 45° with respect to the wood grain, in order to avoid rolling shear during test. In addition, the sampling methodology along the panel was investigated, as well as the relation between shear and delamination tests, and the possibility of coupling them using the same specimen. The results demonstrated that all the proposed shear test methods were effective for evaluating the quality of bonding among layers in CLT panels; however, the practical applicability of the methods led to elect the most suitable for inclusion in technical standards. Shear and delamination results proved not to be correlated, and the results showed that the size of the specimen is a crucial factor in determining the outcomes of delamination tests. Therefore, while it is feasible to propose the coupling of accelerated aging procedures with shear tests, the size of the samples need to be higher than the one tested here.
Human papillomavirus infection is a global social burden that, every year, leads to thousands new diagnosis of cancer. The introduction of a protocol of immunization, with Gardasil and Cervarix ...vaccines, has radically changed the way this infection easily spreads among people. Even though vaccination is only preventive and not therapeutic, it is a strong tool capable to avoid the consequences that this pathogen could cause. Gardasil vaccine is not free from side effects and the duration of immunity is not always well determined. This work aim to enhance the effects of the vaccination by using a new class of adjuvants and a different administration protocol. Due to their minimum side effects, their easy extraction, their low production costs and their proven immune stimulating activity, citrus-derived molecules are valid candidates to be administered as adjuvants in a vaccine formulation against Hpv.
With the aim to get a stronger immune response against Hpv infection we built an in silico model that delivers a way to predict the best adjuvants and the optimal means of administration to obtain such a goal. Simulations envisaged that the use of Neohesperidin elicited a strong immune response that was then validated in vivo.
We built up a computational infrastructure made by a virtual screening approach able to preselect promising citrus derived compounds, and by an agent based model that reproduces HPV dynamics subject to vaccine stimulation. This integrated methodology was able to predict the best protocol that confers a very good immune response against HPV infection. We finally tested the in silico results through in vivo experiments on mice, finding good agreement.
Pulmonary metastasectomy has become a well-established procedure for patients with certain types of solid tumors. Patients are usually scheduled for staged lung metastasectomy in case of primary ...tumor control, the absence of distant non-lung metastases, and when complete resection is achievable. Nodules are removed with precision resection in order to ensure radical resection with minimal margins; this technique permits good oncological results, preserving the surrounding pulmonary parenchyma and causing minimal distortion compared to staplers. When possible, anatomical resections should be avoided since they are not justified by real oncological advantages and, in the majority of cases, sacrifice too much healthy tissue, possibly leading to inoperability in the case of metachronous relapses. Thus, preserving the maximum amount of pulmonary parenchyma is crucial because repeated metastasectomies are possible and frequent, with no theoretical limits to the number of reinterventions. In our multidisciplinary board team, we support the role of pulmonary metastasectomy as a useful curative therapy, with acceptable morbidity and mortality, with indications to be discussed case-by-case.

Recent findings demonstrated that physical exercise has a powerful role in improving cognitive function and delaying age-associated neurological decline. However, to date, there is a lack of information regarding the effect of physical activity (PA) on brain cells architecture.
In this paper, we hypothesized that PA could play a role in the transcriptional changes of genes that enrich the main cells of central nervous system (CNS). From NCBI, we selected a microarray dataset composed of the human hippocampi (GSE110298) from 23 cognitively intact clinical cases (NDHSs) (aged 87.4 ± 6.3 years) selected to from the Rush Memory and Aging Project (MAP). The significantly expressed genes, obtained comparing hippocampi from subjects who underwent Low Physical Activity (LPA) vs those who performed High Physical Activity (HPA), were overlapped with the main genes enriching the CNS cells, obtained from the public human brain single-cell RNA-sequencing dataset (GSE67835), in order to determine the respective weighted percentages of significantly expression genes modulation (WPSEG).
In NDHSs underwent HPA, the WPSEG was higher for Neurons, Dendritic Development, Synaptic transmission genes and Axon Development. In addition, in NDHSs underwent LPA we observed high expression of genes enriching Oligodendrocytes, Microglia, and Endothelial cells. Furthermore, neurogenesis and the decreasing of the T cell-mediated inflammatory process were the two main molecular mechanisms activated in the brains of NDHSs underwent HPA.
From our results, it is possible to conclude that, in elderly subjects, the transcriptional profile of CNS cells changes as a function of the PA conducted during life. Performing PA periodically supports the maintenance of the physiological balance of neuronal cells and, consequently, improves the quality of life of the elderly.
Chest drain insertion is a simple procedure with very low morbidity and mortality. The correct procedure provides for a good fixation of the drainage to the skin. An alternative “Roman Sandal ...technique” for securing the chest drain to the skin is proposed compared to the classical methods. The main feature of the method is the fact that a single suture acts as “tube fixing” and “wound closure” by creating an alpha-cross-wires into and around the wound. The new method is presented as more elegant, effective, quicker application and removal of the drainage and excellent cosmetic results.
Schwannomas of nerve sheath origin (Schwann cell) are the most common neurogenic thoracic tumors and they usually originate from an intercostal nerve, especially in the paravertebral region. Tumors ...that originate from other nerves such as the phrenic nerve, vagus, or sympathetic nerves are uncommon. We report two cases of schwannomas in rare locations. A 62-year-old woman had a giant schwannoma arising from the right phrenic nerve, and a 57-year-old woman had one from the left sympathetic nerve. Both tumors were completely removed with preservation of the nerves.
Valproic acid (VPA) is one of the most frequently used antiepileptic drugs for the treatment of focal and generalized epilepsies, absence seizures, and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS). VPA has been ...demonstrated to have a negative effect on both the intrinsic and extrinsic coagulation systems and controversy exists about the clinical relevance of such hematological abnormalities. We describe a case of reversible lung hemorrage due to VPA. In English-language literature only two other similar cases (one of which fatal) have been described so far.
