Star formation is a complex hierarchical process that witnesses the transfer of mass among a range of scales from large diffuse molecular clouds to crowded clumps and finally down to prestellar ...cores. The final stage of this process has prestellar cores actively accreting matter while undergoing gravitational collapse on their way to becoming main sequence stars. This thesis presents multi wavelength submillimeter observations of the Perseus molecular cloud using 160 μm, 250 μm, 350 μm, and 500 μm maps of thermal dust emission from the Herschel space observatory. Additionally C18O J = 3 → 2 spectral line emission is observed in four star forming clumps within Perseus using the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. Spectral line emission allows for the separation of material along the line of sight. Prestellar core mass is derived from observational maps using various source finding algorithms. The mass is overestimated when compared to prestellar core mass found from spectral line data. This overestimation can be mitigated with careful selection of source finding algorithm and background removal. Further, the prestellar core mass derived from spectral line data was the closest match to the initial stellar mass function over dust maps. However, both the spectral line masses and dust map masses do not agree with the IMF confirming a star forming efficiency factor in the evolutionary step between prestellar core and main sequence star. Lastly, a filamentary analysis finds that high mass stars preferentially form in crowded regions close to, or contained within, filament structure.

We examine simultaneous X-ray and UV light curves from multi-epoch 8 day XMM Newton observations of the narrow line Seyfert 1 galaxy 1H 0707-495. The simultaneous observations reveal that both X-ray ...and UV emission are variable and that the amplitude of the X-ray variations is significantly greater than that of the UV variations in both epochs. Using a discrete correlation function (DCF) the X-ray and UV light curves were examined for correlation on timescales up to 7.0 d. Low significance (~ 95 percent confidence) correlations with the UV leading the X-ray variations are observed. The lack of a significant correlation between the UV and X-ray bands seems consistent with the X-ray source being centrally compact and dominated by light bending close to the black hole. In addition, multi-band X-ray light curves were examined for correlations on similar timescales. Highly significant (> 99.9 per cent confidence) correlations were observed at zero lag consistent with previous studies of this AGN.
We present observations of the Cepheus Flare obtained as part of the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) Gould Belt Legacy Survey (GBLS) with the SCUBA-2 instrument. We produce a catalogue of ...sources found by SCUBA-2, and separate these into starless cores and protostars. We determine masses and densities for each of our sources, using source temperatures determined by the Herschel Gould Belt Survey. We compare the properties of starless cores in four different molecular clouds: L1147/58, L1172/74, L1251 and L1228. We find that the core mass functions for each region typically show shallower-than-Salpeter behaviour. We find that L1147/58 and L1228 have a high ratio of starless cores to Class II protostars, while L1251 and L1174 have a low ratio, consistent with the latter regions being more active sites of current star formation, while the former are forming stars less actively. We determine that, if modelled as thermally-supported Bonnor-Ebert spheres, most of our cores have stable configurations accessible to them. We estimate the external pressures on our cores using archival \(^{13}\)CO velocity dispersion measurements and find that our cores are typically pressure-confined, rather than gravitationally bound. We perform a virial analysis on our cores, and find that they typically cannot be supported against collapse by internal thermal energy alone, due primarily to the measured external pressures. This suggests that the dominant mode of internal support in starless cores in the Cepheus Flare is either non-thermal motions or internal magnetic fields.
Planted meadows are increasingly used to improve the biodiversity and aesthetic amenity value of urban areas. Although many 'pollinator-friendly' seed mixes are available, the floral resources these ...provide to flower-visiting insects, and how these change through time, are largely unknown. Such data are necessary to compare the resources provided by alternative meadow seed mixes to each other and to other flowering habitats. We used quantitative surveys of over 2 million flowers to estimate the nectar and pollen resources offered by two exemplar commercial seed mixes (one annual, one perennial) and associated weeds grown as 300m2 meadows across four UK cities, sampled at six time points between May and September 2013. Nectar sugar and pollen rewards per flower varied widely across 65 species surveyed, with native British weed species (including dandelion, Taraxacum agg.) contributing the top five nectar producers and two of the top ten pollen producers. Seed mix species yielding the highest rewards per flower included Leontodon hispidus, Centaurea cyanus and C. nigra for nectar, and Papaver rhoeas, Eschscholzia californica and Malva moschata for pollen. Perennial meadows produced up to 20x more nectar and up to 6x more pollen than annual meadows, which in turn produced far more than amenity grassland controls. Perennial meadows produced resources earlier in the year than annual meadows, but both seed mixes delivered very low resource levels early in the year and these were provided almost entirely by native weeds. Pollen volume per flower is well predicted statistically by floral morphology, and nectar sugar mass and pollen volume per unit area are correlated with flower counts, raising the possibility that resource levels can be estimated for species or habitats where they cannot be measured directly. Our approach does not incorporate resource quality information (for example, pollen protein or essential amino acid content), but can easily do so when suitable data exist. Our approach should inform the design of new seed mixes to ensure continuity in floral resource availability throughout the year, and to identify suitable species to fill resource gaps in established mixes.
Insect pollinators provide a crucial ecosystem service, but are under threat. Urban areas could be important for pollinators, though their value relative to other habitats is poorly known. We ...compared pollinator communities using quantified flower-visitation networks in 36 sites (each 1 km2) in three landscapes: urban, farmland and nature reserves. Overall, flower-visitor abundance and species richness did not differ significantly between the three landscape types. Bee abundance did not differ between landscapes, but bee species richness was higher in urban areas than farmland. Hoverfly abundance was higher in farmland and nature reserves than urban sites, but species richness did not differ significantly. While urban pollinator assemblages were more homogeneous across space than those in farmland or nature reserves, there was no significant difference in the numbers of rarer species between the three landscapes. Network-level specialization was higher in farmland than urban sites. Relative to other habitats, urban visitors foraged from a greater number of plant species (higher generality) but also visited a lower proportion of available plant species (higher specialization), both possibly driven by higher urban plant richness. Urban areas are growing, and improving their value for pollinators should be part of any national strategy to conserve and restore pollinators.
Humans encode two inflammatory caspases that detect cytoplasmic LPS, caspase‐4 and caspase‐5. When activated, these trigger pyroptotic cell death and caspase‐1‐dependent IL‐1β production; however the ...mechanism underlying this process is not yet confirmed. We now show that a specific NLRP3 inhibitor, MCC950, prevents caspase‐4/5‐dependent IL‐1β production elicited by transfected LPS. Given that both caspase‐4 and caspase‐5 can detect cytoplasmic LPS, it is possible that these proteins exhibit some degree of redundancy. Therefore, we generated human monocytic cell lines in which caspase‐4 and caspase‐5 were genetically deleted either individually or together. We found that the deletion of caspase‐4 suppressed cell death and IL‐1β production following transfection of LPS into the cytoplasm, or in response to infection with Salmonella typhimurium. Although deletion of caspase‐5 did not confer protection against transfected LPS, cell death and IL‐1β production were reduced after infection with Salmonella. Furthermore, double deletion of caspase‐4 and caspase‐5 had a synergistic effect in the context of Salmonella infection. Our results identify the NLRP3 inflammasome as the specific platform for IL‐1β maturation, downstream of cytoplasmic LPS detection by caspase‐4/5. We also show that both caspase‐4 and caspase‐5 are functionally important for appropriate responses to intracellular Gram‐negative bacteria.
Experimental evidence correlates anesthetic exposure during early development with neuronal and glial injury and death, as well as behavioral and cognitive impairments, in young animals. Several, ...although not all, retrospective human studies of neurocognitive and behavioral disorders after childhood exposure to anesthesia suggest a similar association. Few studies have specifically investigated the effects of infant anesthesia exposure on subsequent neurobehavioral development. Using a highly translational nonhuman primate model, the authors investigated the potential dose-dependent effects of anesthesia across the first year of development.
The authors examined the effects of single or multiple early postnatal isoflurane exposures on subsequent behavioral development in 24 socially reared rhesus macaques. Infants were exposed to 5 h of isoflurane anesthesia once, three times (ISO-3), or not at all (control). The authors assessed reflex development and anxiety using standardized tests. At approximately 1 yr, infants (n = 23) were weaned and housed indoors with 5 to 6 other subjects. The authors recorded their response to this move and reassessed anxiety.
Compared to controls, animals exposed to repeated isoflurane (ISO-3) presented with motor reflex deficits at 1 month (median range: ISO-3 = 2 1 to 5 vs. control = 5 3 to 7; P < 0.005) and responded to their new social environment with increased anxiety (median range: ISO-3 = 0.4 bouts/min 0.2 to 0.6; control = 0.25 bouts/min 0.1 to 0.3; P = 0.05) and affiliative/appeasement behavior (median range: ISO-3 = 0.1 0 to 0.2; control = 0 bouts/min 0 to 0.1; P < 0.01) at 12 months. There were no statistically significant behavioral alterations after single isoflurane exposure.
Neonatal exposure to isoflurane, particularly when repeated, has long-term behavioral consequences affecting both motor and socioemotional aspects of behavior.

Medical therapy for angina guided by invasive coronary vascular function testing holds promise, but the longer-term effects on quality of life and clinical events are unknown among patients without obstructive disease.
A total of 151 patients with angina with symptoms and/or signs of ischemia and no obstructive coronary artery disease were randomized to stratified medical therapy guided by an interventional diagnostic procedure versus standard care (control group with blinded interventional diagnostic procedure results). The interventional diagnostic procedure–facilitated diagnosis (microvascular angina, vasospastic angina, both, or neither) was linked to guideline-based management. Pre-specified endpoints included 1-year patient-reported outcome measures (Seattle Angina Questionnaire, quality of life EQ-5D) and major adverse cardiac events (all-cause mortality, myocardial infarction, unstable angina hospitalization or revascularization, heart failure hospitalization, and cerebrovascular event) at subsequent follow-up.
Between November 2016 and December 2017, 151 patients with ischemia and no obstructive coronary artery disease were randomized (n = 75 to the intervention group, n = 76 to the control group). At 1 year, overall angina (Seattle Angina Questionnaire summary score) improved in the intervention group by 27% (difference 13.6 units; 95% confidence interval: 7.3 to 19.9; p < 0.001). Quality of life (EQ-5D index) improved in the intervention group relative to the control group (mean difference 0.11 units 18%; 95% confidence interval: 0.03 to 0.19; p = 0.010). After a median follow-up duration of 19 months (interquartile range: 16 to 22 months), major adverse cardiac events were similar between the groups, occurring in 9 subjects (12%) in the intervention group and 8 (11%) in the control group (p = 0.803).
Stratified medical therapy in patients with ischemia and no obstructive coronary artery disease leads to marked and sustained angina improvement and better quality of life at 1 year following invasive coronary angiography. (Coronary Microvascular Angina CorMicA; NCT03193294)
