α in 2094 towns, high in the Center and East of the Subcontinent and lower in Spain, is compatible with the settlement of subsequent waves of migrants moving from the West and from the South toward the centre of the Continent. The present surname structure of Western Europe is strictly linked to local languages.
Los efectos de medicamentos con propiedades hipolipemiantes en la prevención de la enfermedad vascular aterotrombótica, van más allá del solo hecho de descender los lípidos séricos, lo que sugiere ...que están involucrados otros mecanismos no lipídicos y el mantener un adecuado balance hemostático es uno de ellos. El objetivo del estudio fue realizar una intervención medicamentosa con el Ciprofibrato, en individuos hiperlipidémicos y con niveles elevados de fibrinógeno plasmático, con el propósito de conocer los efectos del fármaco sobre estos factores de riesgo y otros parámetros hemostáticos. Cuarenta individuos de ambos sexos, 20 aparentemente sanos y los otros 20 pacientes con evidencia clínica y angiográfica de enfermedad arterial coronaria, fueron asignados en forma aleatoria balanceada a recibir 100 mg de Ciprofibrato o placebo durante un seguimiento promedio de 56 semanas. A todos se les realizó un examen clínico, electrocardiograma, prueba de esfuerzo y exámenes de laboratorio que incluyó perfil lipídico, fibrinógeno plasmático (Fg), factor VII, factor vonWillebrand, proteína C (PC) y el activador tisular del plasminógeno, con controles cada 8 semanas hasta finalizar el seguimiento. El grupo que recibió Ciprofibrato mostró cambios significativos de los lípidos séricos: colesterol -23%, triglicéridos -31%, lipoproteínas de alta densidad (HDLcol) +24% y lipoproteínas de muy baja densidad -23%, excepto en las lipoproteínas de baja densidad (LDLcol) -24%; de los parámetros hemostáticos sólo el Fg logró un descenso del 21% (p = 0,001) a las 40 semanas, disminuyendo a un 9% en la semana 56 del seguimiento. En el grupo placebo, la HDLcol mostró un cambio beneficioso al incrementarse en un 10% (p = 0,02), la PC se redujo en un 20% (p = 0,01) y el Fg se mantuvo en niveles cercanos a la basal hasta la semana 40, para luego descender un 10% al final del seguimiento. En este estudio, el uso de Ciprofibrato en pacientes con riesgo a desarrollar un episodio aterotrombótico, evidenció ser eficaz y seguro en el manejo de la hiperlipidemia, así como mantener un adecuado balance hemostático.
Recientemente publicamos el análisis de los apellidos del Padrón Electoral de 2010 de la República Oriental del Uruguay a través de distancias isonímicas, basado en sus 19 departamentos y las 171 ...comparaciones posibles entre estos, lo que mostró la forma-ción de dos grandes agrupamientos en el sur, y otros pocos vinculados en el norte y este. El objetivo del presente trabajo es detallar el análisis de las distancias isonímicas utilizando la distribución de apellidos, no a nivel departamental, sino de los 221 municipios en los cuales se divide el país. Se estimaron las distancias isonímicas entre ellos, tomados dos a dos (24.310 comparaciones), se construyeron las matrices de distancia correspondientes y se correlacionaron con las de distancias geográficas. La correlación fue mayor para la distancia euclídea (r=0,253±0,033), intermedia para la de Lasker (r=0,18±0,029) y menor para la de Nei (r=0,17±0,03), todas estadísticamente significativas (p<0,001). Se construyeron nuevos dendrogramas determinándose agrupamientos no identificados previamente. Se destaca cierta homogeneidad en el sur con las me-nores distancias, con 7 agrupamientos cercanos a Montevideo. Al norte, con mayores distancias que denotan mayor heterogeneidad de apellidos, se identifican 8 agrupamientos. Se corrobora que el río Negro actuó como barrera geográfica, pero también se observan límites marcados por otros accidentes orográficos, hidrográficos, históricos y factores sociodemográficos no identificados en el análisis anterior. Por último, se resalta la utilidad del uso de apellidos para analizar la estructura poblacional, permitiendo el análisis global de la población de un país, en este caso, Uruguay.
The isonymy structure of two Venezuelan states, Sucre and Táchira, is described using the surnames of the Register of Electors updated in 1991. The frequency distribution of surnames pooled together ...by sex was obtained for the 57 counties of Sucre and the 52 counties of Táchira, based on total population sizes of 158,705 and 160,690 individuals, respectively. The coefficient of consanguinity resulting from random isonymy (Фii), Karlin and McGregor's ni (≡ v), and the proportion of the population included in surnames represented only once (estimator A) and in the seven most frequent surnames (estimator B) were calculated for each county. RST, a. measure of microdifferentiation, was estimated for each state. The Euclidean distance between pairs of counties within states was calculated together with the corresponding geographic distances. The correlations between their logarithmic transformations were significant in both cases, indicating differentiation of surnames by distance. Dendrograms based on the Euclidean distance matrix were constructed. From them a first approximation of the effect of internal migration within states was obtained. Ninety-six percent of the coefficient of consanguinity resulting from random isonymy is determined by the proportion of the population included in the seven most frequent surnames, whereas between 72% and 88% of Karlin and McGregor's ni for Sucre and Táchira, respectively, is determined by the proportion of population included in surnames represented only once. Surnames with generalized and with focal distribution were identified for both states, to be used as possible indicators of the geographic origin of their carriers. Our results indicate that Táchira's counties, on average, tend to be more isolated than Sucre's counties, as measured by RST , estimator B, and Фii Comparisons with the results obtained for other Venezuelan states and other non-Venezuelan populations are also given.
Genetic distances between all possible pairs of counties (n = 37) in the state of Lara, Venezuela were calculated using surname frequencies and the Euclidean distance as estimator. In general, ...Euclidean distances were smaller between counties closer together, and the product moment correlation between geographic and Euclidean distances was 0.49 (p < 0.02). The results suggest that, in Lara, geographic distance has been an important determinant of genetic structure, although topography and roadways also have had an important influence upon this structure.
Los marcadores informativos de ancestralidad (AIM) autosómicos y los del ADN mitocondrial (ADNmt) son muy útiles para identificar el origen y los patrones de migración de las poblaciones. En este ...trabajo se estimó el mestizaje a partir de siete AIM en 188 individuos venezolanos, 84 del estado Guárico y 104 de la región centro occidental de Venezuela (RCO), se estimó la ancestralidad mitocondrial en el estado Guárico y se compararon ambas poblaciones según su origen y desarrollo histórico. Este estudio representa la primera aproximación a la composición genética de Guárico y es el primer reporte para Venezuela utilizando marcadores tipo AIM. Los resultados revelaron que los aportes amerindio y europeo predominan en estas poblaciones, pero el amerindio es mayor en Guárico (50,57 %) que en RCO (44,92 %), y el europeo lo es en RCO (38,46 % vs. 33,72 %). El origen del ADNmt en Guárico es de predominio amerindio (80 %), tendencia similar a lo reportado para RCO (75 %). El aporte amerindio en Guárico es el más alto reportado para Venezuela. Se concluye que las diferencias encontradas entre ambas muestras podrían deberse a la colonización más temprana de la RCO y a su desarrollo industrial moderado durante el siglo XIX. Así mismo, planteamos que los AIM aquí utilizados lograron una buena discriminación del aporte de los tres grupos ancestrales principales y que su uso simultáneo con polimorfismos de origen uniparental permite obtener, en forma económica, una mejor aproximación genética para explicar la dinámica del proceso de mestizaje que dio origen a la población venezolana actual.
To study the isonymy structure of Texas, we analyzed the surname distributions of 3.6 million telephone users registered for the year 1996 in 232 towns distributed in the 7 regions of the state. The ...number of different surnames was 235,740. Matrices of isonymy distances between towns and between geographic regions were constructed and tested for correlation with geographic distance. We found that isonymy distances between the seven regions showed borderline or no correlation with geographic distance, with r = 0.089 ±0.232, r = 0.492 ±0.232, and r = 0.337 ±0.232 for Lasker's, Euclidean, and Nei's distances, respectively. Isonymy distances between towns were significantly correlated with geographic distance, with r = 0.249 ±0.006 for Lasker's distance, r = 0.338 ±0.006 for the Euclidean distance, and r = 0.418 ±0.006 for Nei's distance. Two dendrograms, one for the 7 regions and one for the 232 towns, were built from the matrices of Nei's distances. The dendrogram for regions indicates that a main surname differentiation exists between the East and West areas of Texas, with West Texas being predominantly Hispanic and East Texas being predominantly English-speaking. The dendrogram for the towns confirms in detail the differences identified by the matrix of distances between regions. Random inbreeding calculated from isonymy, FST, was highest in the west and in the south of the state. It was lowest in the area of Austin and Houston. Average Fisher's αfor towns was 734, for regions it was 1,047, and for Texas as a whole it was 1,230. The geographic distribution of αin the state shows distinctly lower values in the traditionally Hispanic west and higher values in the east and on the Gulf of Mexico.
