Isotropic TFT characteristics are realized in the {100}-oriented grain-boundary-free 60 nm thick Si film obtained by the continuous-wave laser lateral crystallization, where the grain- and ...sub-boundaries are defined as the crystallographic boundaries having misfit angles of θ > 15° and θ < 15°, respectively. Sub-boundaries are observed in the film parallel to the scan directions; the misfit angles were 5–10° and the sub-boundary density was 0.02956 μm−1. Sub-grains, joined by the sub-boundaries, have widths of 8 ~ 69 μm. The cumulative distributions of mobility, threshold voltage, and subthreshold swing agree well between the parallel and perpendicular TFTs in the film, where parallel or perpendicular means the source-to-drain directions to the laser scan direction. The maximum mobilities of the parallel and perpendicular TFTs are 695 and 663 cm2/Vs, respectively. The trap-state density NT in the sub-boundaries estimated from the product of the bond efficiency η and the dangling bond density decreases by two decades from those of the grain boundaries. A new carrier transport model of the current flow across the sub-boundary is proposed instead of the thermionic emission model for the grain boundaries.
There is no nationwide necropsy database of animals in Japan, and most of the records are available from the postwar period. To clarify the chronological transition of animal necropsy cases in Tokyo, ...Japan, the records accumulated in The University of Tokyo from 1902 were investigated. Of necropsy records on paper or electronic from 1902 to 2021 kept at the Laboratory of Veterinary Pathology, The University of Tokyo, totally 3,137 cases including 572 in 1903–1914 (the Meiji-Taisho period), 1,258 in 1956–1969 (the Showa period) and 1,307 in 2006–2020 (the Heisei-Reiwa period), respectively, were examined for species, breed, age and pathological diagnosis. Dogs (44.6%) and horses (34.8%) in the Meiji-Taisho period, dogs (62.9%) and cats (17.3%) in the Showa period, and dogs (46.0%), cats (26.1%) and exotic animals (20.5%) in the Heisei-Reiwa period were the most necropsied animal species. With the passage of time, the number of animal species increased, and the breeds of dogs and cats came to be more various. The median ages of death were 2 years, 3 years and 10 years old in dogs in the Meiji-Taisho, Showa and Heisei-Reiwa periods, respectively, and 2 years and 10 years old in cats in the Showa and Heisei-Reiwa periods, respectively. Viral, bacterial and parasitic infections were decreased, and inversely tumor cases increased due to the prolonged lifespan.
Objective Numerous studies have reported an association between common carotid artery (CCA) parameters and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, the association between CCA ...parameters and hemodynamic stress on the left ventricle in elderly patients remains unclear. Methods We assessed CCA parameters, including the height-adjusted CCA interadventitial diameter (diameter/height), mean intima-media thickness (IMT), number of plaques, plaque score, resistance index (RI), and pulsatility index (PI) with ultrasonography, using serum N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) levels as a marker for hemodynamic stress on the left ventricle in 1,315 participants ≥70 years old without CVD. Of these participants, 706 had hypertension, defined as taking antihypertensive medications, having a systolic blood pressure ≥140 mmHg, and/or having a diastolic blood pressure ≥90 mmHg. Results After adjusting for the confounding factors, the CCA interadventitial diameter/height was significantly associated with the log NT-proBNP in both the normotensive group (β=0.125, p=0.002) and hypertensive group (β=0.080, p=0.029). The RI was significantly associated with the log NT-proBNP in the hypertensive group (β=0.176, p<0.001) but not in the normotensive group. In addition, the PI was significantly associated with the log NT-proBNP in the hypertensive group (β=0.156, p<0.001) but not in the normotensive group. However, no significant association was observed between the mean IMT, number of plaques, and plaque score and log NT-proBNP. Conclusion CCA measurements may be useful markers for hemodynamic stress on the left ventricle in elderly patients.
Background:N-Terminal pro B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) is widely used as a marker of ventricular dysfunction. However, data regarding the association of NT-proBNP with blood pressure (BP) ...and pulse pressure (PP) in the elderly population are limited.Methods and Results:The present cross-sectional study involved 6,529 participants, aged ≥70 years, without cardiovascular disease (CVD), who underwent general health examinations. Serum NT-proBNP concentrations were determined, with high NT-proBNP concentrations defined as those ≥125 pg/mL. Subjects were divided into five groups based on PP (<50, ≥50 to <60, ≥60 to <70, ≥70 to <80, and ≥80 mmHg). NT-proBNP was positively associated with systolic BP, whereas a U-shaped association was found between diastolic BP and NT-proBNP. The odds ratios for high NT-proBNP concentrations in the PP ≥80 and ≥70 to <80 mmHg groups (OR 1.83 P<0.001 and 1.40 P<0.005, respectively) were significantly higher than in the PP <50 mmHg group. All data were adjusted for age, sex, body mass index, hemoglobin concentration, serum creatinine, pulse rate, smoking, alcohol intake, and antihypertensive medication intake, and the presence of diabetes and dyslipidemia.Conclusions:The results suggest that NT-proBNP concentrations may be a marker of not only ventricular dysfunction, but also arterial stiffness in the elderly population without CVD.
Objective It is well known that poor sleep increases the risk of heart failure (HF). However, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, we investigated the association of poor sleep ...with hemodynamic stress on the left ventricle, which was a key factor for the development of HF in elderly individuals. Methods A total of 2,301 participants (≥65 years old) without cardiac disease were enrolled in this cross-sectional analysis. We evaluated the subjective sleep quality, sleeping difficulty, subjective sleep duration, use of sleeping pills, and daytime dysfunction using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, a 19-item self-reported questionnaire. We assessed serum N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) as a marker of hemodynamic stress on the left ventricle, and we defined high NT-proBNP as a serum NT-proBNP level ≥ 125 pg/mL. Results Sleeping difficulty was significantly associated with high NT-proBNP levels odds ratio (OR), 1.46; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.16-1.85; p<0.005. A subjective short sleep duration was also significantly associated with high NT-proBNP levels (OR, 1.69; 95% CI, 1.03-2.75; p<0.05). A subjective poor sleep quality, the use of sleeping pills, and daytime dysfunction were not associated with serum NT-proBNP levels. All data were adjusted for the age, sex, body mass index, serum hemoglobin concentration, serum creatinine level, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, and use of antihypertensive medications. Conclusion Poor sleep was associated with high hemodynamic stress to the left ventricle in elderly population.
Subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) frequently results in several complications, including cerebral vasospasm, associated with high mortality. Although cerebral vasospasm is a major cause of brain damages ...after SAH, other factors such as inflammatory responses and oxidative stress also contribute to high mortality after SAH. Trehalose is a non-reducing disaccharide in which two glucose units are linked by α,α-1,1-glycosidic bond, and has been shown to induce tolerance to a variety of stressors in numerous organisms. In the present study, we investigated the effect of trehalose on cerebral vasospasm, inflammatory responses, and oxidative stress induced by blood in vitro and in vivo.
Enzyme immunoassay for eicosanoids, pro-inflammatory cytokines, and endothelin-1, and western blotting analysis for cyclooxygenase-2, inducible nitric oxide synthase, and inhibitor of NF-κB were examined in macrophage-like cells treated with hemolysate. After treatment with hemolysate and hydrogen peroxide, the levels of lipid peroxide and amounts of arachidonic acid release were also analyzed. Three hours after the onset of experimental SAH, 18 Japanese White rabbits received an injection of saline, trehalose, or maltose into the cisterna magna. Angiographic and histological analyses of the basilar arteries were performed. In a separate study, the femoral arteries from 60 rats were exposed to fresh autologous blood. At 1, 3, 5, 7, 10, and 20 days after treatment, cryosections prepared from the femoral arteries were histologically analyzed.
When cells were treated with hemolysate, trehalose inhibited the production of several inflammatory mediators and degradation of the inhibitor of NF-κB and also suppressed the lipid peroxidation, the reactive oxygen species-induced arachidonic acid release in vitro. In the rabbit model, trehalose produced an inhibitory effect on vasospasm after the onset of experimental SAH, while maltose had only a moderate effect. When the rat femoral arteries exposed to blood were investigated for 20 days, histological analysis revealed that trehalose suppressed vasospasm, inflammatory response, and lipid peroxidation.
These data suggest that trehalose has suppressive effects on several pathological events after SAH, including vasospasm, inflammatory responses, and lipid peroxidation. Trehalose may be a new therapeutic approach for treatment of complications after SAH.
Feline mammary carcinomas are characterized by rapid progression and metastases. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is a key regulator of tumor angiogenesis, proliferation and metastasis. The ...present study aimed to investigate the effects of a single drug therapy of bevacizumab on a xenograft model of feline mammary carcinoma expressing VEGF protein. Bevacizumab treatment suppressed tumor growth by inhibiting angiogenesis and enhancing apoptosis; however, it did not affect the tumor proliferation index. Thus, bevacizumab had anti-tumor effects on a xenograft model, and this may be useful for the treatment of feline mammary carcinoma.
A retrospective study involving 14 pet rabbits histopathologically diagnosed with malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNSTs) was conducted. The age at diagnosis was 4–12 years, with a median ...age of 8.6 years. All rabbits had solid subcutaneous tumor masses in varied locations. Surgical excision of the tumors was performed in all cases. Recurrence was observed in 10 cases (71%), and postoperative metastasis to the lung was suspected in 4 cases (29%). The postoperative mean and median survival times were 11 months and 9 months, respectively. Hence, MPNSTs should be considered in the differential diagnosis for subcutaneous masses in rabbits and it is essential to inform the owners of the potentially high recurrence and metastasis rates.
