重症頭部外傷にひき続いて生じたparoxysmal sympathetic hyperactivity（PSH）の2症例を経験した。2症例はいずれもGlasgow come ...scale（GCS）4で来院した交通事故の患者であり，頭蓋内圧管理を含む神経集中治療を行った。1例は第7病日から，もう1例は第1病日からPSHが生じた。頭蓋内環境を改善させ全身状態を良好に維持するために，異常高血圧や高体温をコントロールすることが必要となり，ICU管理が長期化したが，ガバペンチンの投与によってPSHを抑えることに成功した。本邦におけるPSHの報告例は多くないが，認識不足が背景にある可能性がある。集中治療医はPSHの病態を十分に認識する必要がある。
Cytotoxic effect of progesterone on the neoplastic cells was investigated using POS cells, a cell line established from a spontaneous osteosarcoma in a dog. The 20α-HSD activity of POS cells was ...0.85±0.26 NADPH nmol/min mg protein, demonstrating that a considerable activity was present in this tumor cell. When progesterone was added to the medium and cultured for 48 hr, progesterone dose-dependently inhibited the cell growth, showing that progesterone was cytotoxic on this osteosarcoma cells in vitro. In order to assure the role of 20α-HSD on the cell growth, various concentrations of four types of steroid derivatives, STZ 20, 23, 25, and 26, potent inhibitors of 20α-HSD, were added to the medium with 0.1μM progesterone. Then, the POS cell growth was more strongly inhibited, which may suggest that the cytotoxicity of progesterone was enhanced by inactivation of 20α-HSD by STZs. From these results, POS osteosarcoma cells have 20α-HSD, which might play an important role in tumor cell growth against the cell toxicity of progesterone.
Six dogs of various breeds and sexes with the age ranging from 10 to 13 years old were diagnosed for hepatic neoplasm by clinical signs, biochemical analyses, ultrasonography and radiography ...including computed tomography (CT) . On CT images, the masses in the liver of 4 cases were located in the left lateral lobe and those of two other cases in the left medial lobe. Tumors were classified according to the criteria for human liver cancer. In 5 of 6 cases, tumors infiltrated into the lobe and were classified as massive pattern, whereas in the other case, tumor formed the nodule in the lobe and was clearly circumscribed from the surrounding normal liver tissue, which was classified as nodular pattern. All the animals received liver lobectomy under inhalation anesthesia. Definitive diagnosis of primary hepatocellular carcinoma was based on the histopathological examination of the resected liver specimen. Two cases died of renal failure or of respiratory insufficiency on the 18 th and the 35 th postoperative day, respectively. Two cases survived for over a year after the operation. One of them died of the recurrence of the tumor 14 months after the operation and the other died of other complication unrelated to the recurrence of the tumor. The other two cases are still surviving without developing any major complication. These results suggest that surgical resection of the liver lobe with both nodular and massive types could prolong the life of canine patients if the mass exists in a single lobe.
A 4-year-old female Maltese suffering from rheumatoid arthritis was presented to our clinic because of acute cervical pain. Neurologic examination was normal. Myelogram disclosed marked swelling of ...the cervical spinal cord from the 2nd to 5th cervical vertebrae, and cerebrospinal fluid showed elevated protein content (194 mg/dl) and pleocytosis (800/μl, lymphocytes: 90%). Serum antibody to canine distemper virus (CDV) was 1: 1, 024. Corticosteroid treatment did not improve the clinical signs, and the dog was euthanatized on the 42 nd day of illness. Autopsy revealed severe granulomatous inflammation mainly localized in the cervical spinal cord, while CDV antigen or inclusions were not detectable.
The sedative and analgesic/anesthetic effects of medetomidine, acepromazine, azaperone, droperidol and midazolam were compared in laboratory pigs. In these sedatives, medetomidine produced the most ...profound degree of sedation with greater drowsiness than was achieved by other sedatives tested. Medetomidine induced sedation accompanied with weak analgesia and muscle relaxation smoothly and quickly and depressed arousal reaction deeply as compared with other sedatives. Pigs given medetomidine were not aroused easily even by moderately rough stimulation for approximately 60 min after injection.
Birth of malformed/stillborn calves is a liability to farmers and diagnosis of the condition early in gestation would be of immense economic benefit. We report on peripheral plasma progesterone (P4), ...estrone (E1) and estradiol (E2) concentrations quantified by radioimmunoassay throughout gestation in twin embryo recipient cows carrying normal (cow N), freemartin (cow F) and schistosomus reflexus fetuses (cow S). The undulating plasma P4 profiles were identical in all three cows throughout gestation apart from that the concentration in cow F dramatically declined on day 254 and it subsequently gave birth to stillborn calves. The plasma E1 concentration progressively increased in cow N to peak at parturition and then rapidly declined a day after parturition. E1 levels were lower in cow F than in cow N and exhibited a sudden increase in concentration at day 254 of gestation followed by a dramatic decline. Cow S had lower E1 levels throughout gestation than cow N and showed an undulating profile. The plasma E2 profile paralleled the plasma E1 profile in all the cows but the E2 concentration throughout gestation was lower than the E1 levels. Plasma E1 and E2 levels declined to < 20 pg/ml in cow N a day after parturition as opposed to > 150 pg/ml E1 and > 20 pg/ml E2 levels, respectively, in cows F and S. Our results indicate that E1 and E2 are better than P4 as prognostic indicators of fetal in-utero status as well as the number of fetuses a cow is gestating.
