Iron (Fe) plays a key role in sedimentary diagenetic processes in coastal systems, participating in various redox reactions and influencing the burial of organic carbon. Large amounts of Fe enter the ...marine environment from boreal river catchments associated with dissolved organic matter (DOM) and as colloidal Fe oxyhydroxides, principally ferrihydrite. However, the fate of this Fe pool in estuarine sediments has not been extensively studied. Here we show that flocculation processes along a salinity gradient in an estuary of the northern Baltic Sea efficiently transfer Fe and OM from the dissolved phase into particulate material that accumulates in the sediments. Flocculation of Fe and OM is partially decoupled. This is likely due to the presence of discrete colloidal ferrihydrite in the freshwater Fe pool, which responds differently from DOM to estuarine mixing. Further decoupling of Fe from OM occurs during sedimentation. While we observe a clear decline with distance offshore in the proportion of terrestrial material in the sedimentary particulate organic matter (POM) pool, the distribution of flocculated Fe in sediments is modulated by focusing effects. Labile Fe phases are most abundant at a deep site in the inner basin of the estuary, consistent with input from flocculation and subsequent focusing. The majority of the labile Fe pool is present as Fe (II), including both acid-volatile sulfur (AVS)-bound Fe and unsulfidized phases. The ubiquitous presence of unsulfidized Fe (II) throughout the sediment column suggests Fe (II)-OM complexes derived from reduction of flocculated Fe (III)-OM, while other Fe (II) phases are likely derived from the reduction of flocculated ferrihydrite. Depth-integrated rates of Fe (II) accumulation (AVS-Fe + unsulfidized Fe (II) + pyrite) for the period 1970–2015 are greater in the inner basin of the estuary with respect to a site further offshore, confirming higher rates of Fe reduction in near-shore areas. Mössbauer 57Fe spectroscopy shows that refractory Fe is composed largely of superparamagnetic Fe (III), high-spin Fe (II) in silicates, and, at one station, also oxide minerals derived from past industrial activities. Our results highlight that the cycling of Fe in boreal estuarine environments is complex, and that the partial decoupling of Fe from OM during flocculation and sedimentation is key to understanding the role of Fe in sedimentary diagenetic processes in coastal areas.
By the fabrication of periodically arranged nanomagnetic systems it is possible to engineer novel physical properties by realizing artificial lattice geometries that are not accessible via natural ...crystallization or chemical synthesis. This has been accomplished with great success in two dimensions in the fields of artificial spin ice and magnetic logic devices, to name just two. Although first proposals have been made to advance into three dimensions (3D), established nanofabrication pathways based on electron beam lithography have not been adapted to obtain free-form 3D nanostructures. Here we demonstrate the direct-write fabrication of freestanding ferromagnetic 3D nano-architectures. By employing micro-Hall sensing, we have determined the magnetic stray field generated by our free-form structures in an externally applied magnetic field and we have performed micromagnetic and macro-spin simulations to deduce the spatial magnetization profiles in the structures and analyze their switching behavior. Furthermore we show that the magnetic 3D elements can be combined with other 3D elements of different chemical composition and intrinsic material properties.
In this computational study, the network of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium trifluoromethanesulfonate/water mixtures is analyzed in the presence (and absence) of the protein ubiquitin and a zinc finger ...motif. Thereby, common radial distribution functions are decomposed into contributions from different Voronoi shells, and the mutual orientation of cations, anions, and water in the bulk phase as a function of the water mole fraction is discussed. Single particle translation and the reorientation of the dipolar axis seem to follow hydrodynamic relations. Using the body-fixed frame as an alternative reference system, translation and rotation can be decomposed into contributions along and about the axes of a well-defined orthogonal trihedron, thus elucidating the principal motions of the cations and anions as a function of the water mole fraction. The structural dipolar orientation may be correlated with single particle dynamics and can be characterized by the static collective Kirkwood order parameter.
Fe(III) (oxyhydr)oxides affect the mobility of contaminants in the environment by providing reactive surfaces for sorption. This includes the toxic metal cadmium (Cd), which prevails in agricultural ...soils and is taken up by crops. Fe(III)-reducing bacteria can mobilize such contaminants by Fe(III) mineral dissolution or immobilize them by sorption to or coprecipitation with secondary Fe minerals. To date, not much is known about the fate of Fe(III) mineral-associated Cd during microbial Fe(III) reduction. Here, we describe the isolation of a new Geobacter sp. strain Cd1 from a Cd-contaminated field site, where the strain accounts for 104 cells g–1 dry soil. Strain Cd1 reduces the poorly crystalline Fe(III) oxyhydroxide ferrihydrite in the presence of at least up to 112 mg Cd L–1. During initial microbial reduction of Cd-loaded ferrihydrite, sorbed Cd was mobilized. However, during continuous microbial Fe(III) reduction, Cd was immobilized by sorption to and/or coprecipitation within newly formed secondary minerals that contained Ca, Fe, and carbonate, implying the formation of an otavite-siderite-calcite (CdCO3–FeCO3–CaCO3) mixed mineral phase. Our data shows that microbially mediated turnover of Fe minerals affects the mobility of Cd in soils, potentially altering the dynamics of Cd uptake into food or phyto-remediating plants.
Decades of speculation about a warmer, wetter Mars climate in the planet's first billion years postulate a denser CO₂ -rich atmosphere than at present. Such an atmosphere should have led to the ...formation of outcrops rich in carbonate minerals, for which evidence has been sparse. Using the Mars Exploration Rover Spirit, we have now identified outcrops rich in magnesium-iron carbonate (16 to 34 weight percent) in the Columbia Hills of Gusev crater. Its composition approximates the average composition of the carbonate globules in martian meteorite ALH 84001. The Gusev carbonate probably precipitated from carbonate-bearing solutions under hydrothermal conditions at near-neutral pH in association with volcanic activity during the Noachian era.
Fast-field-cycling relaxometry is a nuclear magnetic resonance method growing in popularity; yet, theoretical interpretation is limited to analytical models of uncertain accuracy. We present the ...first study calculating fast-field-cycling dipolar coupling directly from a molecular dynamics simulation trajectory. In principle, the frequency-resolved dispersion contains both rotational and translational diffusion information, among others. The present joint experimental/molecular dynamics study demonstrates that nuclear magnetic resonance properties calculated from the latter reproduce measured dispersion curves and temperature trends faithfully. Furthermore, molecular dynamics simulations can verify interpretation model assumptions by providing actual diffusion coefficients and correlation times.
Data carriers using spin waves in spintronic and magnonic logic devices offer operation at low power consumption and free of Joule heating yet requiring noncollinear spin structures of small sizes. ...Heterometallic rings can provide such an opportunity due to the controlled spin-wave transmission within such a confined space. Here, we present a series of {Sc n Gd n } (n = 4, 6, 8) heterometallic rings, which are the first Sc–Ln clusters to date, with tunable magnetic interactions for spin-wave excitations. By means of time- and temperature-dependent spin dynamics simulations, we are able to predict distinct spin-wave excitations at finite temperatures for Sc 4 Gd 4 , Sc 6 Gd 6 , and Sc 8 Gd 8 . Such a new model is previously unexploited, especially due to the interplay of antiferromagnetic exchange, dipole–dipole interaction, and ring topology at low temperatures, rendering the importance of the latter to spin-wave excitations.
The molar polarisability and molar volume for 71 ionic liquids were extracted from 157 measurements of their refractive index and density, which were then further deconstructed into atomic ...contributions by means of a Designed Regression analysis. Using this approach, the density and refractive index for any chosen ionic liquid with alkyl-substituted imidazolium cations can be predicted in good agreement with experimental data.
The Python-based program Protex was initially developed for simulating proton transfers in a pure protic ionic liquid via polarizable molecular dynamics simulations. This method employs a single ...topology approach wherein deprotonated species retain a dummy atom, which is transformed into a real hydrogen atom during the protonation process. In this work, we extended Protex to include more intricate systems and to facilitate the simulation of the Grotthuss mechanism to enhance alignment with the empirical findings. The handling of proton transfer events within Protex was further refined for increased flexibility. In the original model, each deprotonated molecule contained a single dummy atom connected to the hydrogen acceptor atom. This model posed limitations for molecules with multiple atoms that could undergo protonation. To mitigate this issue, Protex was extended to execute a proton transfer when one of these potential atoms was within a suitable proximity for the transfer event. For the purpose of maintaining simplicity, Protex continues to utilize only a single dummy atom per deprotonated molecule. Another new feature pertains to the determination of the eligibility for a proton transfer event. A range of acceptable distances can now be defined within which the transfer probability is gradually turned off. These modifications allow for a more nuanced approach to simulating proton transfer events, offering greater accuracy and control of the modeling process.
