The Nominal Group Technique, a brainstorming process emphasizing individual participation rather than group discussion, was used to identify strengths and weaknesses of the Coordinated Undergraduate ...Program in Dietetics curriculum at Louisiana Tech University. More than 150 ideas were generated in 3 workshops attended by 45 faculty members and students. The 2 highest-ranked program problems were students' needs to practice professional behavior and the need for an improved advanced nutrition course. Based upon workshop suggestions, the faculty is revising curriculum competencies. Thus, periodic curriculum evaluation can help a dietetics program meet its goals and educational objectives.
Fifty adults with either a present or past complaint of somnambulism were evaluated to determine the development and clinical course of their disorder as well as their personality patterns. ...Generally, when sleepwalking was outgrown, its onset was before age 10 years and its termination before age 15 years. Current sleepwalkers, compared with past sleepwalkers, started sleepwalking at a later age, had a higher frequency of events, and had episodes earlier in the night. Their episodes were also characterized by more intense clinical manifestations. Furthermore, current sleepwalkers demonstrated high levels of psychopathology, whereas past sleepwalkers had essentially normal psychological patterns. Specifically, the current sleepwalkers showed active, outwardly directed behavioral patterns, suggestive of difficulties in handling aggression. The clinical application of these findings is discussed and practical recommendations are given for the evaluation and management of sleepwalking.
The development, clinical course, and electrophysiologic characteristics of narcolepsy were evaluated in 50 adults who had a current complaint of sleep attacks and cataplexy. In most of the patients, ...the first symptoms, usually excessive daytime sleepiness and sleep attacks, developed during childhood or adolescence. The condition was invariably chronic. Patients frequently had family histories of some disorder of excessive daytime sleepiness. In nocturnal sleep or daytime nap recordings, all but three of the patients demonstrated a rapid-eye-movement (REM) period at sleep onset. Sleep apnea was found in only one patient. Our findings indicate that sleep laboratory recordings to detect a sleep-on-set REM period are of little diagnostic value when the narcoleptic patient has cataplexy. Furthermore, narcoleptic patients require sleep laboratory evaluation for sleep apnea only when the presence of apnea is suggested by the sleep history.
Average evoked brain responses (EBRs) to three durations of one kilohertz pure-tone stimuli were computed from human scalp recordings. Stimuli of 25, 75, & 2000 millisecond (msec) duration were each ...presented binaurally at each of eight equally spaced intensity levels, ranging from 58 to 86 db SPL, to three Ss. EBRs computed immediately following presentation, & immediately following removal of the 2000 msec stimulus result in "on" & "off" responses, respectively. EBRs computed immediately following presentation of the 25 & 75 msec stimuli appear to result from the sum of separate responses to stimulus onset & offset. The computer-dissected on & off EBRs are very similar in wave form & amplitude to responses evoked by onset & offset of the 2000 msec stimulus. Data suggest that on & off responses are mediated by independent physiological mechanisms. 1 Table, 9 Figures. Modified HA
Average evoked brain responses (EBR) to the onset (ON) and cessation (OFF) of one kHz pure tone stimuli were computed from human scalp recordings. Stimuli of 2000 msec duration were presented ...binaurally at 10 intensity levels. The waveform of the OFF EBR is similar to the ON EBR. The ON response is in general larger than the OFF response. Comparable ON and OFF amplitude response measures are both sensitive to changes in stimulus intensity which may be fit by a linear function. Significant differences in slope between ON and OFF amplitude intensity functions suggest different physiological systems for these responses. HA
