The article first briefly presents some historical, geographical, social, and cultural data relating to the draught ox in Slovenia, and then discusses the eloquence of some relevant Slovene pictorial ...sources (mainly from the nineteenth and the twentieth centuries). These are either relatively realistic genre scenes depicting oxen at pasture and at work, or those revealing their metaphorical, symbolic meanings. An analysis of the reasons for the appearance of oxen in such works of art and folk art follows, and an attempt to explain different attitudes on the part of painters or sculptors towards the animals. In further analysis of the selected works of art the article then focuses on the 'everyday reality' of the depicted agricultural processes in which oxen were involved, on their social and material cultural aspects - such as people working with oxen, various types of harness, and tools of communication. The findings are comparatively substantiated by analogous documentary photographs, related foreign pictorial sources, oral testimonies from field research, and by other relevant sources and literature.

As a Slovenian, may I begin with a brief introduction to the history, geography and traditional culture of Slovenia, as perhaps for some readers it is still a rather unknown European country? ...Slovenia has been part of the common history of Europe from at least the migration period between the last decades of the sixth century and the eighth century A.D., when our ancestors came to inhabit the eastern Alps. They settled in a territory where the Illyrian and Celtic cultures had flourished, and met the remains of the late Roman civilisation. The places they inhabited entered written history in the Roman era, with written reports on the population and landscape of the eastern Alps, and with the Noric Kingdom or Regnum Noricum, the state of the prehistoric peoples. The very existence of a Celtic culture gave the present day Slovene territory a place in the society, economy and culture of central and western Europe, and in this respect nothing changed during the following centuries.

An ethnological tamer of woodland creatures. Milko Maticetov, researcher in oral literature.
This text on the life and work of the Slovene folklorist and ethnologist, academician Dr Milko Maticetov, ...strives to offer a unique repast. By way of an apéritif, the author, in her introduction, gives us détails of what has been written on Maticetov to date in Slovene folklorist and ethnological academic circles. As an alluring starter we are offered a surprise : the story of «Maticetov's first encounter with France ». The main course, the chapter on «Maticetov, the man and the researcher » who is renowned for his empirical historico-geographic research and whose academic contribution amounts to more than 273 published discussion papers and articles (at least a third of which are in Italian, German, or some other foreign language), is enriched by two side dishes : «The Eastern Alps » and «Resia ». The first of these présents one of the key chapters in his academic life : the independent working group of international ethnologists in the Eastern Alps ; while in the second we read about his research work in Resia, the apex of which is represented by the collection of more than 3000 units of rich Resian oral tradition with its characteristic archaic components. To round off the meal, a sweet offering entitled «Maticetov, an Ethnological Tamer of Woodland Creatures ». Maticetov's honest contemplation of nature, based on childhood experiences, often directed his research work towards themes such as the names of flowers and stars and towards animals — especially Resian zverinice (wild woodland creatures). Ce texte sur la vie et les travaux de l'académicien, jblkloriste et ethnologue slovène, le Ly Milko Maticetov, s'efforce de proposer un repas exceptionnel. Dans son introduction, en guise d'apéritif, l'auteur nous détaille tout ce que Maticetov a écrit à ce jour dans les cercles universitaires, ethnologiques et folkloriques slovènes. En entrée alléchante, une surprise nous est offerte : l'histoire de «la première rencontre de Maticetov avec la France». Le plat principal, le chapitre sur «Maticetov, l'homme et le chercheur» -chercheur célèbre pour sa recherche historique et géographique empirique, et dont la contribution universitaire s'élève à plus de 273 écrits et articles publiés (dont au moins un tiers rédigé en italien, allemand ou autre langue étrangère, — est enrichi de deux garnitures : «Alpes Orientales» et «Résie». La première nous donne l'un des chapitres clés de la vie universitaire de Maticetov : le groupe de travail indépendant d'ethnologues internationaux des Alpes Orientales ; et nous trouvons dans la deuxième des informations sur son travail de recherche en Résie, dont le point culminant est représenté par la collecte de plus de 3 000 éléments de la riche tradition orale de Résie, avec ses composantes archaïques caractéristiques.
