Reviews of the effectiveness of interventions for school refusal (SR) rely upon well-conducted primary studies. Currently there are no guidelines for those conducting primary studies about the ...measurement of outcome following intervention for SR. Most people would agree that it is important to measure school attendance as an outcome but there has been little discussion about other constructs that warrant measurement. To facilitate this discussion and support the development of guidelines, we conducted a scoping review of constructs measured in studies evaluating intervention for SR. We screened the title and abstract of 3,213 publications found in peer-reviewed journals between 1980 and 2019. After full text review of 271 publications, 50 publications describing 51 studies were included. Results address the frequency with which constructs were measured, along with instruments used, informants, and time-points for measurement. Based on the results, we offer guidelines for choosing constructs to measure following intervention for SR and considerations for how to measure the constructs. Guidelines can increase consistency across primary studies, with benefits for future meta-analyses and international comparisons. They also provide support for practitioners contemplating routine evaluation of their interventions for SR. Ultimately, a core outcome set for SR can be developed.
School refusal (SR) can have several negative consequences, but effective treatments are available. When chronic, school absence requires comprehensive treatment. This study evaluates an intervention ...for SR based on a Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) model, Hemmasittarprogrammet (HSP). Attendance, anxiety, depression, quality of life, and emotional and behavioral symptoms were measured at pre-treatment, post-treatment, and follow-up. The participants (n = 84; 69% male) were SR students between 10 and 17 years old and their parents. School attendance increased after treatment and at follow-up. The proportion of students totally absent from school decreased and the number of students with an acceptable level of school attendance increased. Levels of anxiety and depression were lower both post-treatment and at follow-up for the youths and their parents. HSP, a promising treatment program for school refusal, builds on the literature of CBT-based programs, which has been shown to be effective for SR treatment. However, more research about the effectiveness of the program is needed. Future studies should have a stronger research design, include a measure of fidelity, and be evaluated independent of the founders of the program under investigation.

People with autism need to have people around them who understand them, which requires knowledge both about autism and about the specific individual. To achieve this, there is a need for working cooperation between parents and staff. The purpose of this study was to compare staff and parents view of people with autism. To investigate this, 10 interviews were conducted that were analysed with sentence concentration as a method of analysis. The result showed that parents and staff emphasized different parts of the disorder. Parents considered themselves to have the same view as staff, while the staff considered themselves to have a different view than the parents, which could be because they had different reference groups in mind. It was considered that cooperation could be improved by having more meetings. The results confirm previous research.

The aim of this study was to monitor Staphylococcus aureus colonization and disease severity in adults with atopic dermatitis (AD) during 5 months. Twenty-one patients attended 3 visits each for ...severity SCORing of Atopic Dermatitis (SCORAD) assessment, quantitative cultures from the skin and conventional cultures from the anterior nares, tonsils and perineum. S. aureus isolates were typed for strain identity with pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). Seventy-one percent of patients were colonized with S. aureus on lesional skin at least once. Density (colony-forming units (CFU)/cm2) was higher on lesional skin than on non-lesional skin (p < 0.05). Density on lesional skin and number of colonized body sites were positively correlated with SCORAD (p = 0.0003 and p = 0.007, respectively). Persistent carriers of the same strain on lesional skin had higher mean SCORAD index than intermittent/non-carriers (36.3 and 17.1, respectively, p = 0.002). The results show a temporal correlation between several aspects of S. aureus colonization and disease severity in AD raising the question of the importance of this in pathogenesis and treatment.
Although trisomy 8 as the sole chromosome aberration is the most common numerical abnormality in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), little is known about its ...pathogenetic effects. Considering that +8 is a frequent secondary change in AML/MDS, cryptic--possibly primary--genetic aberrations may occur in cases with trisomy 8 as the apparently single anomaly. However, no such hidden anomalies have been reported. We performed a high-resolution genome-wide array-based comparative genome hybridization (array CGH) analysis of 10 AML/MDS cases with isolated +8, utilizing a 32K bacterial artificial chromosome array set, providing >98% coverage of the genome with a resolution of 100 kb. Array CGH revealed intrachromosomal imbalances, not corresponding to known genomic copy number polymorphisms, in 4/10 cases, comprising nine duplications and hemizygous deletions ranging in size from 0.5 to 2.2 Mb. A 1.8 Mb deletion at 7p14.1, which had occurred prior to the +8, was identified in MDS transforming to AML. Furthermore, a deletion including ETV6 was present in one case. The remaining seven imbalances involved more than 40 genes. The present results show that cryptic genetic abnormalities are frequent in trisomy 8-positive AML/MDS cases and that +8 as the sole cytogenetic aberration is not always the primary genetic event.
We previously reported the molecular cloning of a mouse guanosine‐nucleotide‐binding‐protein‐coupled receptor similar to the thrombin receptor. Since the physiological agonist was unknown, the ...receptor was named proteinase‐activated receptor 2. We describe here the cloning and functional expression of the gene encoding the corresponding human receptor. The gene is divided into two exons separated by about 14 kb intronic DNA. The deduced protein sequence is 397 amino acids long and 83% identical to the mouse receptor sequence. Within the extracellular amino terminus, the residues predicted to form the tethered agonist ligand differ between the two receptors; of the first six residues only four are conserved. At positions five and six, a lysine residue and a valine residue, respectively, have replaced arginine and leucine residues found in the mouse sequence. When the human receptor is expressed in Chinese hamster ovary cells, it can be activated by low nanomolar concentrations of the serine proteinase trypsin and by peptides made from the receptor sequence. Northern‐blot analysis of receptor expression showed that the receptor transcript is widely expressed in human tissues with especially high levels in pancreas, liver, kidney, small intestine and colon. Moderate expression was detected in many organs but none in brain or skeletal muscle. By fluorescence in situ hybridization, the human proteinase‐activated receptor 2 gene was mapped to chromosomal region 5q13, where, previously, the related thrombin receptor gene has been located.
