Plastic pollution is distributed patchily around the world's oceans. Likewise, marine organisms that are vulnerable to plastic ingestion or entanglement have uneven distributions. Understanding where ...wildlife encounters plastic is crucial for targeting research and mitigation. Oceanic seabirds, particularly petrels, frequently ingest plastic, are highly threatened, and cover vast distances during foraging and migration. However, the spatial overlap between petrels and plastics is poorly understood. Here we combine marine plastic density estimates with individual movement data for 7137 birds of 77 petrel species to estimate relative exposure risk. We identify high exposure risk areas in the Mediterranean and Black seas, and the northeast Pacific, northwest Pacific, South Atlantic and southwest Indian oceans. Plastic exposure risk varies greatly among species and populations, and between breeding and non-breeding seasons. Exposure risk is disproportionately high for Threatened species. Outside the Mediterranean and Black seas, exposure risk is highest in the high seas and Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs) of the USA, Japan, and the UK. Birds generally had higher plastic exposure risk outside the EEZ of the country where they breed. We identify conservation and research priorities, and highlight that international collaboration is key to addressing the impacts of marine plastic on wide-ranging species.
Objectives
This study sought to establish by expert review a consensus‐based, focused ultrasound curriculum, consisting of a foundational set of focused ultrasound skills that all Canadian medical ...students would be expected to attain at the end of the medical school program.
Methods
An expert panel of 21 point‐of‐care ultrasound and educational leaders representing 15 of 17 (88%) Canadian medical schools was formed and participated in a modified Delphi consensus method. Experts anonymously rated 195 curricular elements on their appropriateness to include in a medical school curriculum using a 5‐point Likert scale. The group defined consensus as 70% or more experts agreeing to include or exclude an element. We determined a priori that no more than 3 rounds of voting would be performed.
Results
Of the 195 curricular elements considered in the first round of voting, the group reached consensus to include 78 and exclude 24. In the second round, consensus was reached to include 4 and exclude 63 elements. In our final round, with 1 additional item added to the survey, the group reached consensus to include an additional 3 and exclude 8 elements. A total of 85 curricular elements reached consensus to be included, with 95 to be excluded. Sixteen elements did not reach consensus to be included or excluded.
Conclusions
By expert opinion‐based consensus, the Canadian Ultrasound Consensus for Undergraduate Medical Education Group recommends that 85 curricular elements be considered for inclusion for teaching in the Canadian medical school focused ultrasound curricula.
Musculoskeletal disorders contribute substantially to worldwide disability. Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears result in unresolved muscle weakness and posttraumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA). Growth ...differentiation factor 8 (GDF8) has been implicated in the pathogenesis of musculoskeletal degeneration following ACL injury. We investigated GDF8 levels in ACL-injured human skeletal muscle and serum and tested a humanized monoclonal GDF8 antibody against a placebo in a mouse model of PTOA (surgically induced ACL tear). In patients, muscle GDF8 was predictive of atrophy, weakness, and periarticular bone loss 6 months following surgical ACL reconstruction. In mice, GDF8 antibody administration substantially mitigated muscle atrophy, weakness, and fibrosis. GDF8 antibody treatment rescued the skeletal muscle and articular cartilage transcriptomic response to ACL injury and attenuated PTOA severity and deficits in periarticular bone microarchitecture. Furthermore, GDF8 genetic deletion neutralized musculoskeletal deficits in response to ACL injury. Our findings support an opportunity for rapid targeting of GDF8 to enhance functional musculoskeletal recovery and mitigate the severity of PTOA after injury.

The Dynamic Albedo of Neutrons instrument aboard the Mars Science Laboratory rover, Curiosity, has been used to map a stratigraphically conformable layer of high‐SiO
2 material in Gale crater. ...Previous work has shown that this material contains tridymite, a high‐temperature/low‐pressure felsic mineral, interpreted to have a volcanic source rock. We describe several characteristics including orientation, extent, hydration, and geochemistry, consistent with a volcaniclastic material conformably deposited within a lacustrine mudstone succession. Relationships with widely dispersed alteration features and orbital detections of hydrated SiO
2 suggest that this high‐SiO
2 layer extends at least 17 km laterally. Mineralogical abundances previously reported for this high‐SiO
2 material indicated that hydrous species were restricted to the amorphous (non‐crystalline) fraction, which is dominated by SiO
2. The low mean bulk hydration of this high‐SiO
2 layer (1.85
± 0.13 wt.% water‐equivalent hydrogen) is consistent with silicic glass in addition to opal‐A and opal‐CT. Persistent volcanic glass and tridymite in addition to opal in an ancient sedimentary unit indicates that the conversion to more ordered forms of crystalline SiO
2 has not proceeded to completion and that this material has had only limited exposure to water since it originally erupted, despite having been transported in a fluviolacustrine system. Our results, including the conformable nature, large areal extent, and presence of volcanic glass, indicate that this high‐SiO
2 material is derived from the product of evolved magma on Mars. This is the first identification of a silicic volcaniclastic layer on another planet and has important implications for magma evolution mechanisms on single‐plate planets.
Plain Language Summary
Using the Dynamic Albedo of Neutrons instrument aboard the Mars Science Laboratory rover, Curiosity, we mapped a silica‐rich layer throughout a small region in Gale crater known as Marias Pass. Previous work has shown that some rocks in Marias Pass contain minerals formed in explosive volcanic eruptions. We determined several key characteristics including orientation, extent, hydration, and elemental composition, which are consistent with material derived from a volcanic deposit. This layer is likely related to nearby silica‐rich material deposited by groundwater along subsurface fractures, and geometric relationships to hydrated silica identified from orbit suggest that this high‐silica layer extends over at least 17 km. Mineralogical data from previous work indicates the crystalline fraction is anhydrous. As such, we interpret the low hydration of this material, attributable to the amorphous (non‐crystalline) fraction, as being consistent with a significant abundance of volcanic glass in addition to other hydrated phases. The presence of volcanic glass indicates that this material has had limited exposure to water since its formation, because glasses tend to preferentially weather. Our results show that this layer is parallel to surrounding rocks, covers a large area, and contains volcanic glass, indicating that it derived from an explosive volcanic product.

The Study to Explore Early Development (SEED), a multisite investigation addressing knowledge gaps in autism phenotype and etiology, aims to: (1) characterize the autism behavioral phenotype and ...associated developmental, medical, and behavioral conditions and (2) investigate genetic and environmental risks with emphasis on immunologic, hormonal, gastrointestinal, and sociodemographic characteristics. SEED uses a case–control design with population-based ascertainment of children aged 2–5 years with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and children in two control groups—one from the general population and one with non-ASD developmental problems. Data from parent-completed questionnaires, interviews, clinical evaluations, biospecimen sampling, and medical record abstraction focus on the prenatal and early postnatal periods. SEED is a valuable resource for testing hypotheses regarding ASD characteristics and causes.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Biologics Effectiveness and Safety (BEST) Initiative conducts active surveillance of adverse events of special interest (AESI) after COVID-19 vaccination. Historical incidence rates (IRs) of AESI are comparators to evaluate safety.
We estimated IRs of 17 AESI in six administrative claims databases from January 1, 2019, to December 11, 2020: Medicare claims for adults ≥ 65 years and commercial claims (Blue Health Intelligence®, CVS Health, HealthCore Integrated Research Database, IBM® MarketScan® Commercial Database, Optum pre-adjudicated claims) for adults < 65 years. IRs were estimated by sex, age, race/ethnicity (Medicare), and nursing home residency (Medicare) in 2019 and for specific periods in 2020.
The study included >100 million enrollees annually. In 2019, rates of most AESI increased with age. However, compared with commercially insured adults, Medicare enrollees had lower IRs of anaphylaxis (11 vs 12–19 per 100,000 person-years), appendicitis (80 vs 117–155), and narcolepsy (38 vs 41–53). Rates were higher in males than females for most AESI across databases and varied by race/ethnicity and nursing home status (Medicare). Acute myocardial infarction (Medicare) and anaphylaxis (all databases) IRs varied by season. IRs of most AESI were lower during March–May 2020 compared with March–May 2019 but returned to pre-pandemic levels after May 2020. However, rates of Bell’s palsy, Guillain-Barré syndrome, narcolepsy, and hemorrhagic/non-hemorrhagic stroke remained lower in multiple databases after May 2020, whereas some AESI (e.g., disseminated intravascular coagulation) exhibited higher rates after May 2020 compared with 2019.
AESI background rates varied by database and demographics and fluctuated in March–December 2020, but most returned to pre-pandemic levels after May 2020. It is critical to standardize demographics and consider seasonal and other trends when comparing historical rates with post-vaccination AESI rates in the same database to evaluate COVID-19 vaccine safety.
In athletes, ECG changes from physiological cardiac remodelling are common but can overlap with findings from a pathological disorder. We compared ECG findings in a group of elite high school ...athletes to a cohort of adolescents with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM).
We prospectively performed 15-lead ECGs and echocardiograms in 147 elite high school athletes. Student-athlete ECGs were compared in blinded fashion to ECGs of 148 adolescents with HCM of similar age and ethnicity. Standard ECG hypertrophy criteria and established expert opinion guidelines (European Society of Cardiology, ESC and Seattle criteria) were analysed. All student-athletes had normal echocardiograms. Overall, 77/147 (52%) of student-athletes met standard ECG criteria for ventricular hypertrophy compared to 126/148 (85%) adolescents with HCM (p<0.0001). There were 112/148 (76%) adolescents with HCM who had pathological Q-waves, T-wave inversion and/or ST-segment depression compared to 1/147 (1%) athletes (p<0.0001). Most patients with HCM (84%, 124/148) had ≥1 abnormal ECG finding(s) according to Seattle criteria, compared to 1% of student-athletes (2/147). Similarly, 130/148 (88%) patients with HCM met group-2 ESC criteria (abnormal), compared to 36/147 (24%) student-athletes (p<0.0001).
Over 50% of elite high school athletes with echocardiographically confirmed normal hearts satisfied standard voltage criteria for ventricular hypertrophy. Pathological Q-waves, T-wave inversion or ST-segment depression were most helpful in distinguishing adolescents with HCM from normals. Both ESC and Seattle criteria successfully stratified the student-athlete and HCM cohorts, however each had a false-negative rate >10% for the HCM cohort. The Seattle criteria demonstrated a significantly lower false-positive rate (1%) than the ESC criteria (24%).
Background: The gut microbiota interacts extensively with the host immune system and thus may modify the risk of graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell ...transplantation (HSCT). During the post-transplant neutropenic period, the majority of allogeneic HSCT recipients receive empirical broad-spectrum antibiotics for febrile neutropenia. We hypothesized that receipt of an antibiotic regimen with an anaerobic spectrum of activity is associated with a higher risk of grade II-IV acute GVHD than receipt of a non-anaerobic antibiotic regimens.
Methods: In this single-center retrospective cohort study, we evaluated associations between peri-transplant receipt of antibiotics with an anaerobic spectrum of activity and the risk and severity of GVHD among 877 adults who received an allogeneic HSCT between January 1, 2005 and December 31, 2016. We identified 609 patients who developed febrile neutropenia after HSCT and compared GVHD risk and mortality among patients who received anaerobic antibiotics (piperacillin-tazobactam or carbapenems; n=333) to patients who received only antibiotics with minimal activity against anaerobes (aztreonam, ceftazidime, or cefepime; n=276). Antibiotics received by patients between 7 days before and 28 days after allogeneic HSCT and GVHD diagnoses were verified via manual review of medication orders and provider notes in electronic medical records.
Results: Receipt of anaerobic antibiotics was associated with an increased risks of grade II-IV acute GVHD (hazard ratio (HR): 1.41; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.10-1.79; P=0.01) and acute GVHD mortality (HR: 1.87; 95% CI: 1.13, 3.11; P=0.02). This hazard was primarily associated with acute GVHD of the gut or liver (HR: 1.38; 95% CI: 1.06, 1.79; P=0.02). The association remained with even short (<7 days) courses of anaerobic antibiotics. Anaerobic antibiotic exposure was not associated with acute skin GVHD (HR: 0.97; 95% CI: 0.69, 1.37; P=0.88), chronic GVHD diagnosis (HR: 0.93; 95% CI: 0.70, 1.23; P=0.43), or chronic GVHD mortality (HR: 0.89; 95% CI: 0.44, 1.81; P=0.76).
Conclusions: Receipt of anaerobic antibiotics for febrile neutropenia post-HSCT is associated with an increased risks of acute GVHD of the gut or liver and acute GVHD mortality. Limiting use of antibiotics with an anaerobic spectrum of activity after allogeneic HSCT may reduce acute GVHD incidence and mortality.
