This study aims to verify the potential of combining corporate prior payment behavior and Kohonen maps for small enterprise default prediction. Logistic regression, discrete-time hazard models, and ...Kohonen maps were applied to a sample of 1200 Italian small enterprises, and two categories of prediction models were calculated: one exclusively based on financial ratios and the other based also on payment behaviorrelated variables. The main findings are as follows: (1) Kohonen map-based trajectories give significantly higher prediction accuracy rates compared to both logistic and hazard models; (2) the longer the forecast horizon and/or the smaller the firm’s size, the greater are the improvements in prediction accuracy obtainable through Kohonen maps; (3) accuracy rates are higher when company payment behavior-related variables are added to financial ratios as default predictors; and (4) the smaller a firm, the greater is the increase in accuracy obtainable by adding payment behavior-related variables.
Destructive changes and breakthrough innovations are embraced in the development of Internet of Things (IoTs). These network-connected smart devices or machine-learning algorithms transfer ...information on consumers to the Internet by small sensors and computing processors. Companies thus track consumers' behaviour and offer personalised products and services. However, consumers are still sceptical in using these devices due to privacy risks and a dearth of awareness about the technologies' perceived value. Therefore, to overcome these barriers, the research seeks to measure the relationships among the elements that affect customers' willingness and decisions to use IoTs-based products. On the basis of motivation theories, two categories of motivational factors are individuated: extrinsic factors such as entertainment and social interaction and intrinsic factors such as information acquisition, privacy risk, and technology readiness level. They are analysed using a sample of 782 early-adopter customers in Italy. The aim is to offer an explorative, quantitative study on the IoTs to enhance the existing knowledge and support business in the process of engaging more users and creating new personalised products. In line with this, the study's implications, limits, and recommendations for further research are presented.
•The motivation theory is adopted.•Two categories of motivational factors are individuated.•A customer based approach is adopted.•The paper aims to support companies in improving their market alignment.
The main aim of this study is to explore to what extent Open Innovation Digital Platforms (OIDPs) can facilitate and support innovation activities of companies and Small and Medium enterprises (SMEs) ...indeed. Specifically, it intends to investigate what are the main capabilities that organizations develop to seize the opportunities provided by OIDPs. The study would carry out an exploratory qualitative analysis, adopting multiple-case study to arrive at a comprehensive and in-depth understanding of the OIDPs mechanism but at the same time to develop more general theoretical statements about main organizational capabilities. The multiple case study sheds light on how Open Innovation Digital Platforms supports all the phases of interactive coupled OI processes and knowledge co-creation through its processes, tools and services as a co-creator intermediary. In particular, the study suggests practical ways in which OIDPs could be used by firms for effective exploration, acquisition, integration and development of valuable knowledge. Therefore, the main original practical and theoretical contribution of the project is the conceptualization of the role of OIDPs in shaping knowledge co-creation, assuming that the platforms act as Open Innovation Intermediaries (OIIs).
The development of entrepreneurship is increasingly recognized as part of the university mission. Universities can contribute as potential driver for entrepreneurship in different ways: the creation ...of new knowledge, its transmission through education, its dissemination through information and communication technologies, and its adoption in new industrial processes or services. The extent and nature of the role of the university in this context is still strongly debated in theoretical discussions concerning the entrepreneurial university paradigm, the "third mission", the "quadruple helix" model and "regional innovation systems". While these concepts have given rise to new models of university engagement in entrepreneurship, some issues are still open. With the exception of some general ideas about how entrepreneurship education should be conducted, it is difficult to find a common denominator for what makes education in entrepreneurship successful.
Purpose
This paper aims to investigate the potential of knowledge management (KM) as a discipline in helping understand and manage social and economic complexity. The paper highlights some of the ...potential relationships between KM in organisations and their economic performance. Finally, the authors assess the role of human resources and technological infrastructures in the relationship between organisation’s approach to KM and their performance.
Design/methodology/approach
The hypotheses are tested via a survey on a sample of managerial-level employees of information technology organisations located in the city of Brno in Czech Republic. The data collected are analysed using structural equation modelling (SEM) to study the relationship between KM; the workforce’s willingness and ability to collaborate and co-create value; and the organisations’ economic performance.
Findings
The research found that there is a direct and positive relationship between an organisation’s approach to KM and its economic performance. This study also shows that the workforce’s behaviour and the technological infrastructure of the organisation have a direct effect on business performance. Finally, the authors proposed that a link between human resource management and technology orientation must be established and supported by a KM strategy.
Originality/value
This paper offers a new perspective to the approach to KM in organisations. Reflections and empirical results underline the need for organisations to invest in the implementation of KM strategies that involve both the human resources and technological infrastructure as a way to improve the impact of knowledge on the companies’ economic performances.

In order to adhere to the concept of sustainable development, firms are increasingly expected to develop innovations that reconcile economic, environmental, and social goals (i.e., sustainable ...innovations). However, achieving this goal is not straightforward, and although several studies have attempted to improve our understanding of sustainable innovation, a systematization of extant findings is lacking. Therefore, this paper conducts a literature review with the objective of organizing previous research regarding sustainable innovation. A systematic approach is adopted, identifying 69 relevant articles. These articles are organized according to three key perspectives: internal managerial, external relational, and performance evaluation. The results demonstrate that the first perspective, incorporating diverse managerial aspects, is the most considered, whereas the second and third perspectives remain underdeveloped. The paper concludes with suggestions for future research.
Sustainable innovation and its management have become fundamental forces for change in business and society. Paradoxically, little attention has been given to how small and medium-sized enterprises ...(SMEs) manage sustainable innovation in the current knowledge-intensive context. By studying 80 SMEs from the high-tech manufacturing sector in Italy, this research has found that, when combined with stakeholder engagement, sustainable innovation management becomes a pivotal phenomenon for new and established SMEs. Stakeholders proved instrumental in generating the sense of environmental responsibility in SMEs. As a pioneer combination of stakeholder theory and innovation management theory, our research found that stakeholder-related capabilities, both tangible and intangible, influence the firm's orientation towards sustainable innovation, its environmental responsibility and related capabilities. Our research assists the sustainability, adaptation, innovation and growth orientation of SMEs in a knowledge-intensive environment by recommending that, in their relationship with stakeholders, SMEs become more open to co-create, share and reuse environmental knowledge.
Purpose
Structural equation modelling (SEM) has been defined as the combination of latent variables and structural relationships. The partial least squares SEM (PLS-SEM) is used to estimate complex ...cause-effect relationship models with latent variables as the most salient research methods across a variety of disciplines, including knowledge management (KM). Following the path initiated by different domains in business research, this paper aims to examine how PLS-SEM has been applied in KM research, also providing some new guidelines how to improve PLS-SEM report analysis.
Design/methodology/approach
To ensure an objective way to analyse relevant works in the field of KM, this study conducted a systematic literature review of 63 publications in three SSCI-indexed and specific KM journals between 2015 and 2017.
Findings
Our results show that over the past three years, a significant amount of KM works has empirically used PLS-SEM. The findings also suggest that in light of recent developments of PLS-SEM reporting, some common misconceptions among KM researchers occurred mainly related to the reasons for using PLS-SEM, the purposes of PLS-SEM analysis, data characteristics, model characteristics and the evaluation of the structural models.
Originality/value
This study contributes to that vast KM literature by documenting the PLS-SEM-related problems and misconceptions. Therefore, it will shed light for better reports in PLS-SEM studies in the KM field.
