Renewable energies are increasingly playing an important role in the world's energy supply. Society demands new solutions to solve environmental issues caused by fossil fuels. The importance of ...photovoltaic technology has been increasing and consequently, the necessity to have more accurate models to characterise the performance of solar cells during their entire lifetime has rose as well. Performance problems may appear during devices' lifetimes associated with factors, such as weather conditions or faulty installation. Cracking might occur, leading to abrupt reductions on the produced power, quite difficult and expensive to fix. The I-V curves of a defected or cracked solar cell might not have the shape imposed by the usual models as 1M5P. In this article, cracked c-Si solar cells are modelled using a novel model: d1MxP. This model is based on the discretisation of the diode's response on models as 1M5P. Instead of imposing a shape and compute some parameters to fit it on experimental data, the proposed model connects every two points. The results suggest a better fit using the proposed model in comparison with the 1M5P, not only in the original curves, but also modelling cracked cells. As consequence of a better fitting, the computation of important figures of merit as maximum power point or fill factor, reveals to be more precise. It is concluded that the proposed model might characterise the performance of a solar cell, even cracked, which is a huge advance aiming the possibility of simulating complex problems during the cells' operation lifetime.
Solar cell equivalent circuit modelling is usually based on continuous I-V models, with a set of data obtained by analytical expressions. This work proposes an almost discrete novel mathematical ...method and correspondent electrical model, based on the I-V curve adjustment at every two adjacent points. It is based on the discretisation of any diode model behaviour, such as the 1M5P (also known as 1D5P) or the 1M7P (also known as 2D7P). For this reason, the model is named d1MxP, meaning that it is a discrete (d) model (1M) with x parameters (xP). The modelling methodology validation process uses experimental data already published in the literature. According to the presented results, the proposed method shows increased accuracy when compared to the 1M5P or 1M7P equivalent models. The accuracy on the maximum power point and fill factor determination is relevant, resulting in an improvement of up to 3.34% in the maximum power, up to 5.70% in its voltage and up to 8.20% in its current, for the analysed data. Furthermore, Fill Factor values, have variation from up to 35.98%. The temperature influence on the silicon solar cell is also analysed, to validate the results. The proposed method allows highly accurate curve fitting to the (experimental) points and consequently, to obtain a more accurate model to analyse the performance of solar cells under different conditions.
The performance of photovoltaic solar cells is usually analyzed using continuous models, for instance, 1M5P. I-V and P-V curves are fitted by a mathematical expression from the electrical model. In ...the case of 1M5P, characteristics are fitted using five parameters that are obtained using a small number of I-V points from a wider set of data, keeping the curve shape given by the mathematical expression from the model. A novel model was recently proposed to overcome this issue. The d1MxP model is based on the discretization of the electrical behavior of the diodes in models such as 1M5P. The d1MxP methodology is equivalent to an analytical incremental calculation and since it connects the given points, the model error should be lower than the one obtained using models as 1M5P. It is based on the connection of adjacent points (with small voltage differences) instead of having the entire voltage range represented by some parameters (as the continuous models do, for instance, 1M5P). In this work, the d1MxP model is applied to perovskite solar cells and paint-type dye-sensitized solar cells. The aim is to analyze the behavior of the discrete model in different third-generation solar cells since their performance cannot be well characterized by the 1M5P model. The accuracy on the maximum power point is relevant, resulting in perovskite solar cells, an improvement of up to 2.61% and, in paint-type dye-sensitized solar cells, an increase of up to 5.03%.
This work brings together dynamical and structural information at a molecular level for cellulose acetate being an original contribution to the general description of polysaccharide properties. In ...particular, it allowed reinterpreting the secondary relaxation mechanisms that are still controversial in the literature; a compilation of data provided by different authors is provided. Detailed dynamical information is provided by dielectric relaxation spectroscopy (DRS) (10−1−106 Hz) for cellulose acetate (CA) in the sub-T g region below ambient temperature; results were compared with cellulose acetate structured as an asymmetric membrane (CAmb). In samples with low water content, two secondary relaxation processes between 173 and 298 K were identified by DRS, associated with localized mobility. The process located at the lowest temperatures (process I) has a different mobility in CA relative to CAmb. The identical crystalline/amorphous state of both materials allowed rationalizing the distinct behavior in terms of polymeric arrangement and ability for water uptake. The looser structure of the CA relative to CAmb as confirmed by FTIR, TGA, and DSC analysis makes more sites accessible to water molecules, resulting in a higher water retention in CA (2.73% w/w) relative to CAmb (1.60% w/w) and an increased molecular mobility in the former due to a plasticizing effect. In both materials, process I is significantly influenced by hydration, shifting to higher frequencies and lower temperatures upon water uptake. This process seems to be associated with mobility occurring within the monomeric unit, which embraces the two anhydroglucose rings connected by the glycosidic linkage and the polar groups directly attached to it. It should involve a very limited length scale, as suggested by its location, far below the glass transition, and the τ∞ value with a low entropic effect. The relaxation process that emerges later, process II, is similar for both samples being much less influenced by water but experiencing a slight antiplasticizing effect shifting to lower frequencies and higher temperatures upon hydration. It should involve side group motions, strongly coupled to the mobility of the anhydroglucose rings, which become hindered probably due to establishment of H-bonds with water molecules. The plasticizing/antiplasticizing effect is being discussed only on the basis of the frequency position of the relaxation peak. Processes I and II merge into a broad relaxation (γdry) upon water removal in both CA and CAmb, however evolving slower in the former with drying, due to a more disordered structure of CA that allows water to interact with more internal sites in the polymer. At higher temperatures (T ≥ 353 K), a process emerges in the high frequency side of the dynamic α-relaxation which is compatible with a βJG-relaxation. The structured specimen CAmb provided an additional way to probe the morphological changes undergone by the material when annealed to temperatures higher than 353 K, originating an increase in the dielectric response. This effect can be associated with a skin densification and partial collapse of the membrane porous network, as observed by SEM.
Introdução: A Hemocromatose Neonatal é uma doença hepática rara de início intrauterino, definida por insuficiência hepática neonatal associada a siderose extra-hepática. A doença hepática gestacional ...aloimune foi estabelecida como causa da lesão hepática fetal. Atualmente, não existe uma abordagem eficaz para o diagnóstico prénatal. Caso Clínico: Grávida de 23 anos apresentou às 32 sema- nas de gestação oligohidrâmnios e focos hepáticos hiperecogénicos. O recém-nascido prematuro desenvolveu falência orgânica multissistémica e faleceu ao segundo dia de vida, apesar de cuidados de suporte intensivos. A autópsia permitiu o diagnóstico de Hemocromatose Neonatal. Conclusão: A identificação ecográfica de focos nodulares hiperecogénicos no fígado fetal pode ser sugestiva de Hemocromatose Neonatal. Investigações adicionais são necessárias para identificar o complexo aloimunitário específico no sangue materno. O estabelecimento do diagnóstico num feto ou recém-nascido afetado pode ter um grande impacto no prognóstico da doença e no desfecho de futuras gravidezes.
This paper evaluates the application of two well-known asymmetric stochastic volatility (ASV) models to option price forecasting and dynamic delta hedging. They are specified in discrete time in ...contrast to the classical stochastic volatility models used in option pricing. There is some related literature, but little is known about the empirical implications of volatility asymmetry on option pricing. The objectives of this paper are to estimate ASV option pricing models using a Bayesian approach unknown in this type of literature, and to investigate the effect of volatility asymmetry on option pricing for different size equity sectors and periods of volatility. Using the S&P MidCap 400 and S&P 500 European call option quotes, results show that volatility asymmetry benefits the accuracy of option price forecasting and hedging cost effectiveness in the large-cap equity sector. However, ASV models do not improve the option price forecasting and dynamic hedging in the mid-cap equity sector.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most common causes of death in the world. The multi-drug resistance, especially in metastatic colorectal cancer, drives the development of new strategies that secure a positive outcome and reduce undesirable side effects. Nanotechnology has made an impact in addressing some pharmacokinetic and safety issues related to administration of free therapeutic agents. However, demands of managing complex biointerfacing require equally complex methods for introducing stimuli-responsive or targeting elements. In order to procure a more efficient solution to the overcoming of biological barriers, the physiological functions of cancer cell plasma and exosomal membranes provided the source of highly functionalized coatings. Biomimetic nanovehicles based on colorectal cancer (CRC) membranes imparted enhanced biological compatibility, immune escape and protection to diverse classes of therapeutic molecules. When loaded with therapeutic load or used as a coating for other therapeutic nanovehicles, they provide highly efficient and selective cell targeting and uptake. This review presents a detailed overview of the recent application of homotypic biomimetic nanovehicles in the management of CRC. We also address some of the current possibilities and challenges associated with the CRC membrane biomimetics.
This work reports and discusses the influence of four phosphonium-based ionic liquids (PhILs), namely trihexyl(tetradecyl) phosphonium dicyanamide, P6,6,6,14dca; trihexyl(tetradecyl) phosphonium ...bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, P6,6,6,14Tf2N; tetrabutyl phosphonium bromide, P4,4,4,4Br; and tetrabutyl phosphonium chloride, P4,4,4,4Cl, on some of the chemical, physical and biological properties of a biomedical-grade suspension of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC). The main goal of this work was to evaluate the capacity of these PhILs to modify some of the properties of neat PVC, in particular those that may allow their use as potential alternatives to traditional phthalate-based plasticizers in PVC biomedical applications. PVC films having different PhIL compositions (0, 5, 10 and 20wt.%) were prepared (by solvent film casting) and characterised by Fourier transform infrared, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, dynamical mechanical thermal analysis, scanning electron microscopy/energy-dispersive X-ray/electron probe microanalysis, X-ray diffraction, transmittance, permeability towards oxygen and carbon dioxide, thermal degradation, contact angle measurement, water and vapour uptake, leachability and biocompatibility (haemolytic potential, thrombogenicity and cytotoxicity). A conventional organic plasticizer (di-isononyl phthalate) was used for comparison purposes. The results obtained showed that it was possible to change the neat PVC hydrophobicity, and consequently its water uptake capacity and plasticizer leachability, just by changing the PhIL employed and its composition. It was also possible to significantly change the thermal and mechanical properties of PVC films by choosing appropriate PhIL cation/anion combinations. However, a specific PhIL may not always be capable of simultaneously keeping and/or improving both physical properties. In addition, ionic halide salts were found to promote PVC dehydrochlorination. Finally, none of the prepared materials presented toxicity against Caco-2 cells, though pure P6,6,6,14dca decreased HepG2 cells viability. Moreover, PVC films with P6,6,6,14dca and P4,4,4,4Cl were found to be haemolytic and thus these PhILs must be avoided as PVC modifiers if biomedical applications are envisaged. In conclusion, from all the PhILs tested, P6,6,6,14Tf2N showed the most promising results regarding blood compatibility, leaching and permeability to gases of PVC films. The results presented are a strong indicator that adequate PhILs may be successfully employed as PVC multi-functional plasticizers for a wide range of potential applications, including those in the biomedical field.

A 45-year-old male presented with high fever, dry cough, diarrhoea and generalized muscle pain, following a two-week trip to Mozambique. P. falciparum infection with hiperparasitemia was confirmed and the patient was treated initially with quinine and doxycycline, then intravenous artesunate. To assess drug susceptibility, ex vivo half-maximal inhibitory concentration assays were conducted, and the isolated P. falciparum genome was deep sequenced.
The clinical isolate exhibited elevated ex vivo half-maximal inhibitory concentration values to dihydroartemisinin, lumefantrine, mefloquine and piperaquine. Genomic analysis identified a I416V mutation in the P. falciparum Kelch13 (PF3D7_1343700) gene, and several mutations at the Kelch13 interaction candidate genes, pfkics (PF3D7_0813000, PF3D7_1138700, PF3D7_1246300), including the ubiquitin carboxyl-terminal hydrolase 1, pfubp1 (PF3D7_0104300). Mutations at the drug transporters and genes linked to next-generation antimalarial drug resistance were also present.
This case highlights the emergence of P. falciparum strains carrying mutations in artemisinin resistance-associated genes in Mozambique, couple with a reduction in ex vivo susceptibility to ACT drugs. Continuous surveillance of mutations linked to drug resistance and regular monitoring of drug susceptibility are imperative to anticipate the spread of potential resistant strains emerging in Mozambique and to maintain effective malaria control strategies.
