The biodiversity and ecosystem functioning (BEF) relationship is expected to be scale-dependent. The autocorrelation of environmental heterogeneity is hypothesized to explain this scale dependence ...because it influences how quickly biodiversity accumulates over space or time. However, this link has yet to be demonstrated in a formal model. Here, we use a Lotka-Volterra competition model to simulate community dynamics when environmental conditions vary across either space or time. Species differ in their optimal environmental conditions, which results in turnover in community composition. We vary biodiversity by modelling communities with different sized regional species pools and ask how the amount of biomass per unit area depends on the number of species present, and the spatial or temporal scale at which it is measured. We find that more biodiversity is required to maintain functioning at larger temporal and spatial scales. The number of species required increases quickly when environmental autocorrelation is low, and slowly when autocorrelation is high. Both spatial and temporal environmental heterogeneity lead to scale dependence in BEF, but autocorrelation has larger impacts when environmental change is temporal. These findings show how the biodiversity required to maintain functioning is expected to increase over space and time.
Objectives
To study the safety and efficacy of AngioVac for left‐sided transcatheter vacuum‐assisted mass extraction (TVME).
Background
The AngioVac system is approved for right‐sided TVME and has ...emerged as an effective and safe alternative for open surgical treatment. The use of the AngioVac device for aspiration of left‐sided TVME has been limited.
Methods
Consecutive patients from two Michigan centers who underwent left‐sided TVME were included. Data on patient demographics, procedural information, in‐hospital and follow‐up events were collected through electronic medical records review. Technical success was defined as aspirating of 70%–100% of the material.
Results
Ten patients (mean age 58.3 ±17.3 years, 50% male) were included. Indications for TMVE were in large for recurrent embolic events. All patients underwent bilateral cerebro‐embolic protection using the Sentinel device. The total mean procedure time was 192.5 (±47.5) min of which the meantime for active aspiration (bypass time) was 9.3 (±4.2) min. The circuit configuration was: arteriovenous (AV) in four cases and arterioarterial (AA) in six cases. Successful aspiration was achieved in 80% of cases. No complications were reported (range follow‐up 1–16 months).
Conclusions
Our small case series demonstrates the feasibility and safety of the AngioVac system in left‐sided mass extraction. Larger trials are needed to further demonstrate its effectiveness and safety and potentially apply for on‐label use.

Here, using high-throughput transcriptomic and epigenomic profiling of more ...than 450,000 single nuclei in humans, marmoset monkeys and mice, we demonstrate a broadly conserved cellular makeup of this region, with similarities that mirror evolutionary distance and are consistent between the transcriptome and epigenome. The core conserved molecular identities of neuronal and non-neuronal cell types allow us to generate a cross-species consensus classification of cell types, and to infer conserved properties of cell types across species. Despite the overall conservation, however, many species-dependent specializations are apparent, including differences in cell-type proportions, gene expression, DNA methylation and chromatin state. Few cell-type marker genes are conserved across species, revealing a short list of candidate genes and regulatory mechanisms that are responsible for conserved features of homologous cell types, such as the GABAergic chandelier cells. This consensus transcriptomic classification allows us to use patch-seq (a combination of whole-cell patch-clamp recordings, RNA sequencing and morphological characterization) to identify corticospinal Betz cells from layer 5 in non-human primates and humans, and to characterize their highly specialized physiology and anatomy. These findings highlight the robust molecular underpinnings of cell-type diversity in M1 across mammals, and point to the genes and regulatory pathways responsible for the functional identity of cell types and their species-specific adaptations.
Structural heart disease (SHD) is a new field within cardiovascular medicine. Traditional imaging modalities fall short in supporting the needs of SHD interventions, as they have been constructed ...around the concept of disease diagnosis. SHD interventions disrupt traditional concepts of imaging in requiring imaging to plan, simulate, and predict intraprocedural outcomes. In transcatheter SHD interventions, the absence of a gold-standard open cavity surgical field deprives physicians of the opportunity for tactile feedback and visual confirmation of cardiac anatomy. Hence, dependency on imaging in periprocedural guidance has led to evolution of a new generation of procedural skillsets, concept of a visual field, and technologies in the periprocedural planning period to accelerate preclinical device development, physician, and patient education. Adaptation of 3-dimensional (3D) printing in clinical care and procedural planning has demonstrated a reduction in early-operator learning curve for transcatheter interventions. Integration of computation modeling to 3D printing has accelerated research and development understanding of fluid mechanics within device testing. Application of 3D printing, computational modeling, and ultimately incorporation of artificial intelligence is changing the landscape of physician training and delivery of patient-centric care. Transcatheter structural heart interventions are requiring in-depth periprocedural understanding of cardiac pathophysiology and device interactions not afforded by traditional imaging metrics.

Left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) obstruction is a leading cause of mortality and exclusion from transcatheter mitral valve replacement (TMVR). Intentional laceration of the anterior mitral valve ...leaflet to prevent LVOT obstruction (LAMPOON) is a transcatheter mimic of surgical chord-sparing leaflet resection.
The purpose of this prospective multicenter trial was to study LAMPOON with transseptal (Edwards Lifesciences, Irvine, California) TMVR in annuloplasty rings or native mitral annular calcification (MAC).
Subjects at high or extreme surgical risk and prohibitive risk of LVOT obstruction from TMVR were included. Eligibility was modified midtrial to exclude subjects with threatened LVOT obstruction from a Sapien 3 valve fabric skirt. The primary endpoint was procedure survival with successful LAMPOON, with successful TMVR, without reintervention, and with LVOT gradient <30 mm Hg (“optimal”) or <50 mm Hg (“acceptable”). Secondary endpoints included 30-day mortality and major adverse cardiovascular events. There was universal source-data verification and independent monitoring. All endpoints were independently adjudicated. Central laboratories analyzed echocardiogram and CT images.
Between June 2017 and June 2018, 30 subjects were enrolled equally between the MAC and ring arms. LAMPOON traversal and midline laceration was successful in 100%. Procedure survival was 100%, and 30-day survival was 93%. Primary success was achieved in 73%, driven by additional procedures for paravalvular leak (10%) and high-skirt neo-LVOT gradients observed before a protocol amendment. There were no strokes.
LAMPOON was feasible in native and annuloplasty ring anatomies in patients who were otherwise ineligible for treatment, with acceptable safety. LAMPOON was effective in preventing LVOT obstruction from TMVR. Despite LAMPOON, TMVR using Sapien 3 in annuloplasty rings and MAC still exhibits important limitations. Women in cardiology experience considerable gender disparities in publications, which hinders their career advancements to higher faculty and senior leadership positions. However, the extent of these ...disparities across different types of cardiovascular literature is not well understood.
We investigated gender differences in authorship across various cardiovascular publications over a decade and examined geographic variations in the representation of women authors.
All papers published from January 1, 2010, to December 31, 2019, in 4 major cardiovascular journals (Journal of the American College of Cardiology, European Heart Journal, Journal of the American Medical Association Cardiology, and Nature Reviews Cardiology) were reviewed.
Of the 18,535 papers with 111,562 authors, 20.6% of the authors were women, and 47.7% of the papers had no women authors. Over 10 years, the proportion of women authors remained low (20.7% in 2010 to 21.4% in 2019), with the lowest proportion in editorial papers (14.8%) and the highest in research papers (21.8%). More women as first (34.6%) and last (47.6%) authors were affiliated with institutions in the United States compared with other countries. The proportion of women middle-order authors was higher on papers with women as first authors (29.4% vs 20.5%) or last authors (30.6% vs 21.3%), compared with papers with men as first or last authors, respectively.
Over the past decade, the proportion of women authors across all article types in major cardiovascular journals remained low. A call to action is needed to promote women in cardiology and provide them with equitable opportunities.
