ABSTRACT This paper reports on the measurement of the large-scale anisotropy in the distribution of cosmic-ray arrival directions using the data collected by the air shower detector ARGO-YBJ from ...2008 January to 2009 December, during the minimum of solar activity between cycles 23 and 24. In this period, more than 2 × 1011 showers were recorded with energies between ∼1 and 30 TeV. The observed two-dimensional distribution of cosmic rays is characterized by two wide regions of excess and deficit, respectively, both of relative intensity ∼10−3 with respect to a uniform flux, superimposed on smaller size structures. The harmonic analysis shows that the large-scale cosmic-ray relative intensity as a function of R.A. can be described by the first and second terms of a Fouries series. The high event statistics allow the study of the energy dependence of the anistropy, showing that the amplitude increases with energy, with a maximum intensity at ∼10 TeV, and then decreases while the phase slowly shifts toward lower values of R.A. with increasing energy. The ARGO-YBJ data provide accurate observations over more than a decade of energy around this feature of the anisotropy spectrum.
The nearly continuous light curves with micromagnitude precision provided by the space mission Kepler are revolutionizing our view of pulsating stars. They have revealed a vast sea of low-amplitude ...pulsation modes that were undetectable from Earth. The long time base of Kepler light curves allows for the accurate determination of the frequencies and amplitudes of pulsation modes needed for in-depth asteroseismic modeling. However, for an asteroseismic study to be successful, the first estimates of stellar parameters need to be known and they cannot be derived from the Kepler photometry itself. The Kepler Input Catalog provides values for the effective temperature, surface gravity, and metallicity, but not always with sufficient accuracy. Moreover, information on the chemical composition and rotation rate is lacking. We are collecting low-resolution spectra for objects in the Kepler field of view with the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST, Xinglong observatory, China). All of the requested fields have now been observed at least once. In this paper, we describe those observations and provide a useful database for the whole astronomical community.
Conventional zinc bromide electrolytes offer low ionic conductivity and often trigger severe zinc dendrite growth in zinc-bromine flow batteries. Here we report an improved electrolyte modified with ...methanesulfonic acid, which not only improves the electrolyte conductivity but also ameliorates zinc dendrite. Experimental results also reveal that the kinetics and reversibility of Zn2+/Zn and Br2/Br− are improved in this modified electrolyte. Moreover, the battery's internal resistance is significantly reduced from 4.9 to 2.0 Ω cm2 after adding 1 M methanesulfonic acid, thus leading to an improved energy efficiency from 64% to 75% at a current density of 40 mA cm−2. More impressively, the battery is capable of delivering an energy efficiency of about 78% at a current density of as high as 80 mA cm−2 when the electrode is replaced by a thermally treated one. Additionally, zinc dendrite growth is found to be effectively suppressed in methanesulfonic acid supported media, which, as a result, enables the battery to be operated for 50 cycles without degradation, whereas the one without methanesulfonic acid suffers from significant decay after only 40 cycles, primarily due to severe zinc dendrite growth. These superior results indicate methanesulfonic acid is a promising supporting electrolyte for zinc-bromine flow batteries.
•Methanesulfonic acid (MSA) is employed as supporting electrolyte for ZBFB.•MSA improves the kinetics and reversibility of Zn2+/Zn and Br2/Br− reactions.•MSA significantly reduces the battery's internal resistance from 4.9 to 2.0 Ω cm2.•The battery exhibits an energy efficiency of 78% at 80 mA cm−2.•The battery can be stably cycled for 50 cycles with degradation.
Side population (SP) cells within tumors are a small fraction of cancer cells with stem-like properties that can be identified by flow cytometry analysis based on their high ability to export certain ...compounds such as Hoechst 33342 and chemotherapeutic agents. The existence of stem-like SP cells in tumors is considered as a key factor contributing to drug resistance, and presents a major challenge in cancer treatment. Although it has been recognized for some time that tumor tissue niches may significantly affect cancer stem cells (CSCs), the role of key nutrients such as glucose in the microenvironment in affecting stem-like cancer cells and their metabolism largely remains elusive. Here we report that SP cells isolated from human cancer cells exhibit higher glycolytic activity compared to non-SP cells. Glucose in the culture environment exerts a profound effect on SP cells as evidenced by its ability to induce a significant increase in the percentage of SP cells in the overall cancer cell population, and glucose starvation causes a rapid depletion of SP cells. Mechanistically, glucose upregulates the SP fraction through ATP-mediated suppression of AMPK and activation of the Akt pathway, leading to elevated expression of the ATP-dependent efflux pump ABCG2. Importantly, inhibition of glycolysis by 3-BrOP significantly reduces SP cells in vitro and impairs their ability to form tumors in vivo. Our data suggest that glucose is an essential regulator of SP cells mediated by the Akt pathway, and targeting glycolysis may eliminate the drug-resistant SP cells with potentially significant benefits in cancer treatment.
The focal plane camera is the core component of the Wide Field-of-view Cherenkov/fluorescence Telescope Array (WFCTA) of the Large High-Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO). Because of the ...capability of working under moonlight without aging, silicon photomultipliers (SiPM) have been proven to be not only an alternative but also an improvement to conventional photomultiplier tubes (PMT) in this application. Eighteen SiPM-based cameras with square light funnels have been built for WFCTA. The telescopes have collected more than 100 million cosmic ray events and preliminary results indicate that these cameras are capable of working under moonlight. The characteristics of the light funnels and SiPMs pose challenges (e.g. dynamic range, dark count rate, assembly techniques). In this paper, we present the design features, manufacturing techniques and performances of these cameras. Finally, the test facilities, the test methods and results of SiPMs in the cameras are reported here.
Background
Postoperative colorectal anastomotic strictures are quite common. As such, many techniques have been available to address such a problem, one of which is endoscopic dilation. The aim of ...the present study was to evaluate the long-term outcomes following endoscopic dilation using a multidiameter balloon.
Methods
A retrospective study was conducted on patients with postoperative anastomotic stenosis treated with endoscopic dilation using a multidiameter balloon at our institution, in January 2005–December 2019 were retrospectively reviewed, excluding those with tumor recurrence. Perioperative factors, complications, and recurrence rates were analyzed.
Results
There were 40 patients, (22 males and 18 females, mean age 64.6 ± 10.7 years, range 33–84 years). The median follow-up period was 56 months (interquartile range 22.5–99 months). Only 1 complication occurred, micro-perforation due to guided wire injury, which was managed conservatively. Five (12.5%) patients developed restenosis and underwent repeat balloon dilation. None of the five recurrences required more aggressive management, such as redo anastomosis.
Conclusions
Endoscopic multidiameter balloon dilation is a safe and effective method for treating benign colorectal anastomotic strictures.
In this study, the compositional dependence of the age hardening response and high temperature tensile properties of the Mg–xGd–3Y–0.5Zr (x=3, 6, 10, and 12wt%) alloys are investigated. The amount of ...cuboid-shaped phases and β′ precipitates increased significantly with increasing the Gd content. The Mg–10Gd–3Y–0.5Zr alloy exhibited the maximum ultimate tensile strength at room temperature, while at higher temperatures the Mg–12Gd–3Y–0.5Zr alloy exhibited the maximum yield strength and ultimate tensile strength. The yield strength and ultimate tensile strength of the Mg–12Gd–3Y–0.5Zr alloy increased with the test temperature and showed its maximum at 150°C, and then decreased as the temperature increased further. The Mg–12Gd–3Y–0.5Zr alloy maintained a high ultimate tensile strength of more than 300MPa up to 250°C. The superior high temperature tensile strength of the tested alloy is mainly associated with solution strengthening and precipitation hardening of the cuboid-shaped phases and β′ precipitates in Mg matrix. Especially, β′ precipitates can hinder the dislocation movement at high temperature.
Targeted therapeutics, such as those abrogating hypoxia inducible factor (HIF)/vascular endothelial growth factor signaling, are initially effective against kidney cancer (or renal cell carcinoma, ...RCC); however, drug resistance frequently occurs via subsequent activation of alternative pathways. Through genome-scale integrated analysis of the HIF-α network, we identified the major protein kinase C substrate MARCKS (myristoylated alanine-rich C kinase substrate) as a potential target molecule for kidney cancer. In a screen of nephrectomy samples from 56 patients with RCC, we found that MARCKS expression and its phosphorylation are increased and positively correlate with tumor grade. Genetic and pharmacologic suppression of MARCKS in high-grade RCC cell lines in vitro led to a decrease in cell proliferation and migration. We further demonstrated that higher MARCKS expression promotes growth and angiogenesis in vivo in an RCC xenograft tumor. MARCKS acted upstream of the AKT/mTOR pathway, activating HIF-target genes, notably vascular endothelial growth factor-A. Following knockdown of MARCKS in RCC cells, the IC50 of the multikinase inhibitor regorafenib was reduced. Surprisingly, attenuation of MARCKS using the MPS (MARCKS phosphorylation site domain) peptide synergistically interacted with regorafenib treatment and decreased survival of kidney cancer cells through inactivation of AKT and mTOR. Our data suggest a major contribution of MARCKS to kidney cancer growth and provide an alternative therapeutic strategy of improving the efficacy of multikinase inhibitors.
Abstract
We have acquired radio-continuum data between 70 MHz and 48 GHz for a sample of 19 southern starburst galaxies at moderate redshifts (0.067 < z < 0.227) with the aim of separating ...synchrotron and free–free emission components. Using a Bayesian framework, we find the radio continuum is rarely characterized well by a single power law, instead often exhibiting low-frequency turnovers below 500 MHz, steepening at mid to high frequencies, and a flattening at high frequencies where free–free emission begins to dominate over the synchrotron emission. These higher order curvature components may be attributed to free–free absorption across multiple regions of star formation with varying optical depths. The decomposed synchrotron and free–free emission components in our sample of galaxies form strong correlations with the total-infrared bolometric luminosities. Finally, we find that without accounting for free–free absorption with turnovers between 90 and 500 MHz the radio continuum at low frequency (ν < 200 MHz) could be overestimated by upwards of a factor of 12 if a simple power-law extrapolation is used from higher frequencies. The mean synchrotron spectral index of our sample is constrained to be α = −1.06, which is steeper than the canonical value of −0.8 for normal galaxies. We suggest this may be caused by an intrinsically steeper cosmic ray distribution.
